About the Bumblebee Conservation TrustThe Bumblebee Conservation Trust is a UK-based national charity (England & Wales 1115634, Scotland SC042830) and a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 05618710). The Trust was established in May 2006 in response to ongoing declines in many bumblebee species, due primarily to habitat loss through agricultural intensification. In the last 70 years two species have become nationally extinct whilst populations of several others have crashed dramatically. Over one third of social bumblebee species are now regarded as species of principal importance under the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework. Bumblebees are ‘keystone’ pollinators, integral to our natural environment, and providing significant economic benefits through pollination of crops. We aim to help bumblebees and the habitats that they depend on through conservation and education.

This is an exciting time to join the Bumblebee Conservation Trust as we move into the next phase of our development following the launch of a new five year strategic plan. For more information about our work, visit www.bumblebeeconservation.org

Background information on the post

Since our launch in 2006, we have been effective in delivering a range of projects and initiatives, raising awareness among the general public and creating flower-rich habitats to support bumblebee populations. The Trust has grown quickly and now has an annual turnover of six hundred thousand pounds and an impressive membership of nearly 8,000 people.

BBCT’s current success can largely be attributed to two major projects. The first is Bees for Everyone, which we launched In May 2012, following the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Natural Heritage and several other funders. This national project has allowed us to significantly expand our conservation and outreach work, in particular: engaging with over 400 landowners; providing specialist habitat management advice which has the potential to benefit over 3000 hectares of land for bumblebees; carrying out 350 events, walks and talks; re-launching our website which now attracts 300,000 visitors a year; attracting 3,000 new members and 400 new volunteers. Achievements which have all made a substantial difference to the plight of our bumblebees!

In November 2012 we received funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to develop our monitoring and surveillance work. BeeWalk is a project which aims to gather data about the distribution and abundance of bumblebees across the UK. This project engages volunteers in monthly surveys and is complemented by our BeeWatch online photo survey scheme.

Following the development of a new five year strategy which will see BBCT develop its presence regionally across the UK, and position itself as one of the UK Government’s key delivery agents for the emerging National Pollinator Strategies (England & Wales), we have ambitious plans to grow our income.
