Function notation

• Function notation is writing something using the form f(x). • So, an equation like y=3x-7 in function notation is just

f(x)=3x-7• Just remember f(x) is just a fancy way to write y.

How to solve an equation using function notation

• So, if a question says f(x)=3x-7, find f(-4), you replace all of your x’s with -4.• Try this one. The solution is on the next slide.

• This means that when x=-4, y=-19. You can also think of it as the point (-4, -19) is on this line.
