Broader Perspective :The purpose of a BOM system is to manage information of Product Structure of Assembly allowing to maximizes efficiency, improves quality, and lower costs in manufacturing

Functional background of Oracle BOM

Oracle Bills of Material is a comprehensive manufacturing tool that maximizes efficiency, improves quality, and lowers costs for even the most sophisticated manufacturers . BOM maintains all data for manufacturing a product. It allows companies to standardize there manufacturing.

Oracle BOM has highly responsive, multi–functions to support and optimize product manufacturing.

Oracle BOM is one of the basic modules in e-business suite of Oracle Applications.

Bill of Material - ClassificationOracle BOM classified into

Standard Model and Option Class Planning Engineering

1. Standard Bill of MaterialLists the mandatory componentsRequired quantity of each component

Information to control

Examples : Manufacturing Bills, Pick-to-Order bills, Kit Bills and Phantoms.


Bill of Material - Classification

2. Model Bill of Material

Defines the List of options and option classes You can choose in Oracle Order Management to order a configuration. You order and build configurations of the Model.

Examples : Assemble-to-order or Pick-to-Order bills

3. Option Class Bill of Material

Groups optional components on a bill.

Becomes a level in Model Bill of Material

Option classes can also have mandatory components.

Examples : Assemble-to-order or Pick-to-Order bills



4. Planning Bill of Material

Structure that includes a percentage distribution for its components.

By nesting Planning items, Oracle Master Scheduling forecasts level by level and applies planning percentages at each level.

5. Engineering Bill of Material

Oracle Engineering Users are allowed to assign manufacturing and engineering items as components to an engineering bill.

Bill of Materials Users can assign only manufacturing items as components to manufacturing bills.

Engineering Bill of Material can be defined as an alternate for a manufacturing bill. (Prototype variations from the primary bill that produce the same assembly.)

Common Bill

Common Bill for multiple Organizations if manufacturing same item.

BOM can be defined in one organization (Master) and other organizations can reference it for actual manufacturing.

In case of Common all child components of master BOM must be available in all other orgs wherever we wants to common the structure

We can also Common Bills between items of same organization also

Benefits:- Centralization of Bills, from one master org we can control and maintain Bills


Copy Bill

BOM of one item can be copied to another item.Copying can be done within the Organization or

between organizations.Copy any revision of a primary or alternate billAfter copying Modify your new bill as necessary

Benefits:- Reduces the work of bill defining considerably.


Common / Copy Routings

Common RoutingsCommon routings can be assigned within Organization.Cannot be assigned between organizations

Copying a RoutingsRoutings of one item can be copied to another within or between organizations.

Benefits:- Reduces the work of routing defining considerably.


Roll Up Costs

Oracle BOM enables to perform Full cost roll up (or), Single level cost roll up.

Full cost roll upBuilds the costs of assemblies, starting with

lowest level to top level assemblies.

Single level cost roll upRolls the costs at the first level of the bill structure

for each assembly.
