Autumn is definitely here and it certainly seems a lot cooler after the long hot summer. The Parish Council have been working on a neighbourhood plan for the past 5 years. The draft plan is now ready for consultation (see page 4). Do please comment as this document is an important legal framework when planning decisions are made.

Unfortunately, our local bank will soon be closing. Ben Bradley MP and our County Councillor have both echoed that this is not a wise decision... with Cllr Andy Wetton going further to state that with different management and better opening times, the bank could be an asset to the Lloyds banking group. Will they listen? Let us hope so otherwise we might end up being the nation's largest town without basic commercial amenities such as a bank or supermarket!See pages 8 and 9.

The best way to reach local people and promote your business is to advertise locally. Warsop

& District News is one of the largest free local publications in the area.

6,000 papers are printed and distributed every month.

Approx 5,700 are delivered to every household and business in the Parish of Warsop, the rest

are distributed in the library, Town Hall, health centres, dentist, care homes, Meden Vale

Charity shop and Cuckney shop. At a fraction of the cost of some other well known

publications you not only reach your target audience but get value for money too.

General tasks and garden maintenanceTidy bordersKeep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter.Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

Start your compostIf you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal.Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with them without a qualm...

Prepare your soil for next yearYour soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier!

WateringHardly an issue at the moment! However, do keep an eye on your pots and containers in dry spells and check for wilting leaves before it is too late; all plants that keep their leaves continue to transpire, so should not be allowed to dry out completely.Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this should be kept clear to allow moisture to get to the roots. Mulching with bark or compost will help.

PlantingWith the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting.

Rake fallen leavesDon’t waste fallen leaves (except those perilous rose leaves and evergreens, which take too long to rot down) - given time they decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake up fallen leaves and chuck them into a simple frame to make leaf mould (black bin liners spiked with air holes will also do if you can bear the visual offense - but remember to dampen the leaves first). If left to linger on the lawn for long, the grass will turn yellow. Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat.

BirdsOur feathered friends will be starting to build their reserves for winter, so do please put out food and fresh water for them.Wildlife experts recommend that we feed the birds year round as they soon become reliant on the food we provide. Their greatest time of need is during winter and spring, when their natural food sources are greatly depleted. Putting out food helps them survive the chilly winter months and ensures they are in good condition for the breeding season. Choose good quality wild bird seed, bird peanuts (remember to take them out of nylon mesh bags which can trap beaks and legs), suet and fat balls (these are great high energy foods and ideal during cold weather) as well as kitchen scraps such as crushed breakfast cereals, pinhead oatmeal, uncooked porridge oats, hard fats such as mild cheese, fresh and dried fruit, cooked potatoes and cooked rice. Bread is only an ‘empty filler’ so not ideal and remember never to put out mouldy food. Also do make sure your ‘feeding station’ has good all round visibility and is well out of curious cat range!A plentiful supply of clean water is essential for drinking and bathing; melt ice on frosty mornings with warm water, ensure the inside of your bird bath remains roughened and do remember to change the water regularly.Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

The Government supports the development of theshale gas industry across our area but:

IS FRACKING SAFE?

Page 3October 2018www.warsopparishcouncil.co.uk

NEW NEIGHBOURS COMING TO TOWN?

That can’t happen here, can it?YES IT CAN!

The fracking industry wants to drill with no separation distance between well sites and our communities, and without having to get local planning consent. The Government is proposing to change the planning laws in order to let them do just that!In a House of Commons Written Ministerial Statement (22 May 2018), Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Industry, announced proposals to classify exploratory shale gas drilling as “permitted development”. This would remove your democratically elected councils AND YOUR OBJECTIONS from the planning process (and they can drill and frack under your house from 1 km away). Building a 1.5 hectare exploratory well pad – which could result in noisy day and night drilling for up to eight months and require over 60 HGV journeys a day – could end up being treated the same in planning terms as putting up a garden shed. The Government is also proposing that fracking in England should be treated as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) which would mean that planning applications for full-scale, multi-well commercial fracking would be decided by a government-appointed planning inspector, not the local planning authority. This would effectively remove all control of fracking projects from democratically elected county councils and local communities, which may result in thousands of fracking wells being drilled across the country and the industrialisation of the British countryside.Yet the Government has refused to set either a minimum safe distance from homes or a limit to well density so it seems the only changes to the regulatory system they are prepared to make are to favour the shale gas industry, NOT to safeguard residents and the environment.

Map: Derbyshire County Council .Ineos application for a drill site at Bramley Moor, Eckington, was recently approved by the Planning Inspector at appeal, after being refused by Derbyshire County Council - It is 300m from nearest home.

THE FIGHT FOR A FRACK FREE WARSOP

The Government is currently running a public consultation on these proposals, which is open to everyone to respond, closing date 25 October 2018. The proposals are a serious assault on our local democracy – the Government has perhaps realised that they are never going to persuade local communities to accept fracking, so they are now trying to find some way for the fracking industry to start drilling without consulting local people.

HOW YOU CAN HELP TO STOP THIS ATTACK ON LOCAL DEMOCRACY:• Respond to the Government consultation which runs until 25 October 2018 and ask your elected representatives to respond, objecting to the changes: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/permitted- development-for-shale-gas-exploration• Visit www.letcommunitiesdecide.org to get involved in the campaign and access online resources.• Email James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, at james.brokenshire.mp@ parliament.uk demanding that the government withdraws its plans to treat fracking as permitted development and a NSIP.• Email Claire Perry, Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, at [email protected] asking her to do the same.• Contact your MP and local councillors to voice your concerns and ask them, as your elected representatives, to contact James Brokenshire and Claire Perry. • Check www.frackfreeunited.co.uk and your local groups for updates and guidelines –join Frack Free Warsop Facebook page.• Sign The Frack Free Declaration on the Frack Free United webpage.

Are Shale Gas Sites Safe? The Health and Safety Executive website states that “Blowout of hydrocarbons from wells is a major accident hazard for an installation or land borehole site, with the potential to result in major fire and explosion”. http://hse.gov.uk/offshore/wells.htm. Earlier this year, a fracking well blowout at Powhatan Point, Ohio, led to the evacuation of residents up to a mile radius of the well and natural raw gas leaked from the well for weeks. Find out for yourself how fracking can impact health: Google “Fracking + Health”.In its 2015 report, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs warned that properties located within a 5 mile radius of a fracking operation, “may also incur an additional cost of insurance, to cover losses in case of explosion on the site”.It would appear that the Government is aware of this:“There will be opportunities for the insurance industry in shale gas exploration and production”, statement by Claire Perry MP, Minister for Energy, 21 May 2018.Question: If there is no risk from living near a fracking site, why would there be a need for additional insurance cover?

But don’t we need the gas?The Government’s support for the fracking industry is an indicator of the turmoil in its energy policy:• The UK’s largest fracking company, Ineos, want shale gas to power and feed their European chemical plants to produce plastics, NOT to heat your home!

• The Government’s own 2017 ‘Gas Security of Supply’ assessment report confirmed that fracking is not required for our energy security.• A robust programme of home insulation would permanently reduce gas demand, cut imports and reduce fuel poverty. Since 2012, government support for such projects has fallen 58%. www.e3g.org• In July 2018, The National Infrastructure Commission stated that moving to an electricity system mainly powered by renewable energy sources could be the “safest bet” in the long term, and become the lowest cost outcome for consumers. www.nic.org.uk• Despite such evidence, the Government’s policies have resulted in a collapse in support for renewable energy and conservation measures, whilst overseas based companies enjoy the “most generous tax breaks in the world” for fracking in your community.

But that’s in America…

Only 18 % of the UK supports fracking, compared to 85%

who support renewables(Government Energy and Climate Change

Ben Bradley Update So we’ve just come to the end of a busy recess where I’ve spent my time in the constituency getting around and about as much as possible, visiting some fantastic projects, as well as seeing some of the issues that residents are experiencing. During recess, I’ve had meetings with Mansfield BID to discuss how we can improve Mansfield Town Centre, and how I can support them and the District Council. I’ve also met with the local Police Beat Manager for the Town Centre to see how the Police are tackling the recent drug related issues, and it’s really positive to see a visibly increased police and warden presence in the Town Centre. I’ve also formally written to the District Council, asking them for an update on where they are with producing their ‘Local Plan’. As you may know, local authorities are now required to produce a Local Plan to help the area and map out how the area can move forward, but Mansfield District Council as of yet have failed to do so. I’ll be checking in with them again to make sure they make one that’s fit for the whole constituency, including Warsop. As always, I’ll continue to push the District Council to make sure that Warsop is a priority, and not an afterthought. There have been a lot of issues over the last few weeks with travellers and traveller camps setting up around the constituency. I’ve had lots of local residents contact me directly with complaints about anti-social behaviour, noise, and litter, with many residents actually feeling quite intimidated by them. This is obviously completely unacceptable for residents to feel like this in their own homes. As it is Mansfield District Council who are responsible for dealing with travellers, I have contacted the Council directly and asked what tough actions they will take to ensure that we as a district don’t experience these problems again. Nationally speaking, the government is currently looking into how we can strengthen the laws around trespassing, and how we can protect both people and property from travellers moving in, and I’ll be supporting any actions that can prevent illegal traveller camps setting up in our constituency. Finally, I also want to make people aware about a fantastic opportunity that is available to Warsop and Mansfield residents. Not many people know, but MP’s can ‘sponsor’ a limited number of tours of the Houses of Parliament, subject to security restrictions and vetting. This gives constituents the chance to explore the Palace of Westminster on an official tour. You’d get to see some really interesting and historic things, as well as the actual debating Chamber of the House of Commons, where I spend a lot of my time. If you like history, politics or architecture then this is absolutely something you. If you think you’d be interested in going on a tour (and I would definitely recommend it) then send me an email to [email protected] and we can look in to arranging it. As always, if any Warsop residents need to contact me with any issues, then please feel free to do so.

The revellers are coming in to the hall, with giggles and laughter; you should see them all. In fancy dress costumes a sheer delight, who knew we’d have royalty, a glorious sight. Rock stars and Romans, rainbows, and more. Roadworkers, Red ladies, ripe fruits galore.Laid on the table are things good to eat, from raspberry pavlova, to rich roasted meat. Ready made sarnies, pork pies and treats. Let me count up the puddings all ready to eat. Risotto, radicchio, red peppers and cheese, it really looks scrumptious, eat plenty please. The room was a buzz with music and cheer. Everyone was happy to bring their own beer. A welcome punch was given, to welcome them all, to Teversal Manor Village Hall.At first we weren’t sure, to do this or not, but Bingo was offered and uptake was hot!! Clickety click and a quacky duck. Everyones excited, we’re chancing our luck. The raffle was drawn and time was running out, we started the clear up, and got moving about. Thanks to Elaine, our vice for this year, she was fantastic, a darling, a dear. For helping to sort out this party, for us. A brilliant atmosphere, a giggle and a buzz.So please think of joining your nearest group, together with friends you’ll have such a hoot. Thanks to our members for making today, a fun afternoon, the Innerwheel way.

Let’s Get this Party StartedWe’re setting the table and laying things out. Get the party started, we start to shout. With rumbling tums, we’re watching the clock, as the guests start arriving, we’re ready to rock.

Warsop Inner Wheel Craft and CrumpetSome might say that the modern-day ‘Inner Wheel’ lady can find it quite a challenge in today’s hectic and demanding world, to get a healthy work-life balance, and that goes for the retired ladies among us too. The word ‘hobby’ doesn’t often feature on our To Do lists and if it does, it probably isn’t high up there with picking up the kids, food shopping, taxi driving the grandchildren somewhere, cleaning the house etc, etc.But let us not forget what joy can be found in DIY crafts and partaking in craft work. It may even benefit your health as the Health Benefits of Knitting report by the Knit for Peace charity found. They recently uncovered that knitting can reduce depression and even the onset of dementia. Put simply though, we need to make room for DIY crafts in your life.

Our President Ruth being a bit of a self-confessed artyfarty type, has made time and held her first craft workshop for members and friends of the club. Much delight went around the room when it was announced there would be a ‘Craft and Crumpet’ night.Clearly excited by the thought of a little crafting 15 members attended the two hour evening workshop to learn how to decorate a bottle, with President Ruth demonstrating the workshop. Our crafters were asked to bring along an EMPTY bottle of wine with the labels removed. Being Inner Wheel ladies, you can imagine how they struggled to find this most basic of requirements!

After a welcome greeting Ruth demonstrated the first stage of painting the bottle and took questions for the excited crafters watching. Some were watching with intent and some with wide eyes trying not to miss anything. Has anyone noticed that people tend to say they aren’t creative at the start of a workshop? Well just you wait to see the results at the end of the night. The phrase ‘I could rip a tissue’ was coined by Comedian Stu Francis back in the days of Crackerjack (I wonder how many of you shouted Crackerjack back at the screen!). But that is exactly what the crafters were learning to do. Rip a design from a three-ply napkin and stick it on a bottle. Simple really. These things usually are if someone shows you.At 8pm the crumpet came out. As this was the round doughy bread variety, our crafters were only a little disappointed. A very big thank you goes to our kitchen helpers President Ruth’s sister Jane and her daughter Lizzie, for serving tea, crumpets and helpful loveliness all evening.Revitalised with the cheeky crumpet treat and a cuppa, the ladies continued with their bottle decoration and I think you will agree created a few wonderful masterpieces. This is the first craft night that Warsop has held and we think it went really well, so well that we have another one planned for March next year. All proceeds from the craft night and from the craft items put out at Club meetings each month, will go towards the Clubs charity fund in support of the many great charities, locally, nationally and internationally that we supportIf you like the look of what we do at Warsop and want to join our Inner Wheel family, please get in touch and come to one of our monthly meetings. If you love what we do but don’t live in our area, go the association web page and look for your nearest district and club.

The Friends of ThynghoweThynghowe and the forgotten heritage of Sherwood

You are welcome to join The Friends of Thynghowe at our Annual General Meeting at 7:30pm on Thursday 25th October in the Fitzherbert Room at Warsop Parish Centre. There will be updates on the latest research into Thynghowe and the surrounding forest, a review of the past year and a preview of future events plus questions and the usual historical chat. If you have wondered why we reckon Thynghowe is so important this could be your chance to find out.October also marks the start of our winter conservation sessions in the forest to the east of Warsop. The trees and plants in the woodlands are as significant historically as the humps, holes and ancient stones so we contribute to the management of the area by the local Forestry Commission staff and other volunteers. Recent tasks have included controlling the vegetation on Hanger Hill, removing invasive species, hedge planting and clearing around the ancient oaks. On Friday 12th October we will be helping to clear a section of the banks of the Black Pool. It is enjoyable work with different tasks suited to a range of levels or strength and fitness. There is usually excellent cake provided! These sessions start at 10am and we usually finish around 2pm. Check our website or Facebook page for details if you would like to come along. A couple more dates you may be interested in. On Saturday 3rd November our Autumn Get Together will be held at Sherwood Pines, starting at 10am. We are planning a walk around the forest on Saturday 1st December visiting sites that tell the story of the impact of the Dukes of Newcastle upon Tyne and Portland on the local woodlands. More details next month.

Welbeck Estates Brass BandWelbeck Estates Brass Band took part in the first WELBECK WI FUNDAY on the 22nd July at the Lady Margaret Hall. They received so many kind remarks on the day and everyone did themselves proud!Band members feel they are extremely lucky to have such a kind and friendly band, including members as young as 7 years old, who have only been with the band for around 6 months. They are such an inspiration to us all, their determination and hard work has shaped our band to be, “the place to be, to play/learn an instrument.”The band still has room for anyone wishing to learn an instrument or anyone wishing to get back into playing after a break or anyone who has a free night and can help, they would love to hear from you. Welbeck Estates Brass Band are a great bunch of like-minded people who want to help support the local musicians of the future. They want to share this within the local communities through teaching and playing in and aroung the parish. Anyone who is keen to learn an instrument please get in touch at [email protected] or 07889869940, you can also find them on Facebook on the friends of Welbeck Estates Brass Band.

MP raises concerns over Warsop bank closureMansfield and Warsop’s MP Ben Bradley has written to Lloyds bank to raise his concerns at the closure of the Warsop branch.Discussing the closure, Ben said:“I had several Warsop residents contact me about the closure, so I wrote to Lloyds bank to outline my concerns. They have since replied to me, and unfortunately, they have explained that very few people actually use the branch anymore, so it’s been a commercial decision to close the building.“As the local Member of Parliament, I can’t actually force them to change their minds and keep the branch open, so unfortunately on this occasion it does look like the branch will be closing.“Lloyds have stressed to me that Warsop customers will still be able to access their banking services via the local Post Office.”

We welcome new faces, staff and pupils, and a new look to our site. We can whole heartedly say, we are looking forward to another successful and exciting year at Sherwood Juniors.

What’s Been Happening at Sherwood School? Sherwood Juniors has once again opened its doors to a new year and a new term. As usual there is so much to look forward to here at the school; as well as so much to look back on and celebrate.

Spotlight on Sherwood – An inside point of view. ‘Funfit’ Fantastic!Funfit is a superb morning provision run by a few dedicated members of staff. It is highly beneficial for our pupils and gives them a great boost in the morning. Here are a few words from our resident Funfit host, Miss Rick: "Throughout the school year, children are invited to take part in Funfit sessions which begin 5 minutes before the start of the school day. Children attending the session work on their core fitness, which helps develop fine motor skills. It is also a fun and active start to the morning!"Miss Rick Y5 Keep up the great work Miss Rick!

Two First Places for Sherwood GardenersGardeners at the school were awarded first place for their carrot entry at this year’s Carnival. They also achieved first place at the Mansfield Garden and Craft Festival on September 1st! Our gardeners are a hard-working, dedicated group of children who thoroughly deserve their ongoing success – and there will be more! Many thanks of course to Ken Scott for continuing to volunteer his time and expertise to the club. Finally, we would like to extend a thank you to the local community for their praises with regards to the garden; we greatly appreciate it. So if ever you’re walking past our school gates, feel free to stop and admire the children’s hard work for a moment – you won’t be disappointed. Mrs Johnson

Summer Club FunOur very own Miss Rees volunteered her time over the summer to put on a special fun-filled summer club for some of our pupils. Here’s her round up:

"We ran two successful summer club days back in August. Where the children enjoyed a range of activities such as pond dipping at the local river. The children were a credit to themselves and our school and thoroughly enjoyed discovering various pond-life."Furthermore, they made their own pizza’s, giant bubbles and homemade playdoh! They were an absolute joy to have, and luckily the weather was on our side!"Thank you Miss Rees!

Warsop in BloomLocal Councillor and Warsop businessman Andy Wetton strives to enhance and preserve the beauty and future of Warsop Town.Andy Wetton, who is a County, District and Parish Councillor, represents Warsop as an elected member and is pictured left showing the Town Centre floral display which he provided from his Ward Allowance. And below is a copy of the letter Cllr Wetton wrote to the James Hadden, Senior Bank Manager of LLoyds Bank, in protest of the pending closure of their Warsop branch.Cllr Wetton decided to take action after being approached by hundreds of local residents imploring him to help prevent the closure. He states in his letter that Warsop has an adult population of 13000 which, with more housing developments in the planning, this number will raise. Also see article on page 8.

BATTLE’S OVER - A NATION’S TRIBUTE

11th November 2018100 Years Of Remembrance

On 11th November the United kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the day, 100 years ago, when the

guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. In remembrance of the millions who were killed, or came home dreadfully wounded, over a thousand Beacons of Light will be lit around the country at 7-00pm.The event will also commemorate the efforts on the Home front by men and women who kept industry going and brought in the harvests. The beacons will symbolise the light of hope that emerged from the darkness of war. With the kind permission of Harworth Estates, who own the land, and Tetron Point PLC, who are managing the site I have arranged to light a beacon on the old Welbeck Colliery Pit Tip.The beacon will be seen from miles away as there is a 360 degree panoramic view from the chosen position. Unfortunately there is no public access to the area so there will only be a few invited guests at the beacon lighting ceremony. It is hoped that many people in this area will look towards the beacon and reflect

on the sacrifice that many of our forebears made.Prior to the lighting a bugler will sound the Last Post, at 18-55. At 19-05 over 1000 Cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells across the nation, and beyond, in celebration of peace. Also at 19-05 over 100 Town Criers throughout the United Kingdom, and around the world, will join together in an international Cry for Peace around the World.More information on the day’s events can be found at https://www.brunopeek.co.ukThe tip is being re-modelled and once complete will have a viewing platform at the top and members of the public will be able to use a footpath over the area. Edwin A. Tattersall.

Their shop, which was located at 26a High Street, has moved just a couple of doors along to 30a High Street. Needless to say they are still offering

the same amazing service and fantastic choice of quality flooring as they aways have.

Maun Valley Trail Reopens Following Precautionary ClosureA section of the Maun Valley Trail has reopened after being given the all-clear after bacteria was found on the path following several water leaks. The path was closed from Old Mill Lane, Forest Town, to the other side of the stone bridge that goes over the River Maun on 19 July after tests revealed contamination. Fencing and closure signs that were put up at all access points in this location have been removed and the car park has reopened.  Mansfield District Council's Environmental Health team has completed thorough and difficult investigations into reports of underground water leaks in the area. Environmental Health Officers worked with the private owners of nearby properties to ensure a significant mains water leak along with two smaller water leaks in the area were repaired. A drain has also been capped off.Following these repairs, an inspection of the footpath confirmed the footpath was dry and the land on either side of the affected part of the path was drying out.

Executive Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: "We take the health and safety of our residents very seriously and closed the path as a precautionary measure."We are satisfied that the leaks in the area have been fixed and there is no further risk to the public. Thank you for your patience."The area is the lowest point in a valley, known locally as Flood Dykes. Although some flooding in this area is not unusual, the recent warm weather highlighted a possible leak. The flooding was not the result of any improvement work carried out on the route by Mansfield District Council in January 2017.The council had previously said that the risk of infection was low as long as people had good hygiene standards. It is generally good practice to wash your hands before eating, drinking or smoking.

Update on Victoria Street fireDemolition work is expected to take place at a derelict building that is structurally unsound after a large fire in Mansfield on Tuesday night. The former Bombardier building on Victoria Street was handed back to the private owner on Thursday evening. The owner has arranged for demolition contractors to arrive on site and work is expected to start over the weekend. Mansfield District Council's Building Control team is working with the demolition company to make the building safe.  The council’s Housing Needs team is continuing to support the residents of four properties and the priority is to make sure they can return home as soon as possible.  Victoria Street remains closed between Rooth Street and Portland Place and security guards are in place 24 hours a day to prevent access

and ensure public safety.Businesses that can be accessed from Rooth Street are still able to open to the public. The council has covered the payment machine in Garden Road car park to support affected businesses and their customers with free parking during this time.Mike Robinson, Director of Economic Growth at Mansfield District Council, said: “The safety of the public and their property is our main priority and we’d like to thank the residents and businesses in the area for their patience. We will remain in direct contact with those affected and provide updates when possible.”

Christine Baker, aged 56,  of Chaucer Street, was charged with one offence of failing to comply with her householder duty of care contrary to section 34(2A) Environmental Protection Act 1990.  She was due to stand trial at  Mansfield Magistrates' Court on 3 August after pleading not guilty at an earlier hearing. However she changed her plea before the trial started and admitted the offence. She was charged after an investigation by Mansfield District Council into a large amount of fly-tipped waste found on Oakfield Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, on 11 August 2017.  The court was told that the waste included a sofa, pieces of wood, wooden furniture, packaging, pieces of carpet, a vacuum cleaner, plastic sheeting, broken toys, two mattresses, a bedframe, as well as faecal matter and general domestic waste. Evidence found in the waste was linked back to Christine Baker who told council officers she had paid an unknown scrap man £70 in cash to take the waste but had not checked to see if he was officially registered to dispose of the waste.Fining her £200 for the offence, the magistrates told Baker that she had “made a serious error of judgement”. They also ordered her to

pay £200 towards prosecution costs and a £30 victim surcharge. After the case, Executive Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: "Using an unlicensed scrap man proved to be a very expensive way to dispose of some waste for this householder in the end. "When getting rid of rubbish it really does pay to use properly registered waste carriers - it might cost a little more but is it worth risking a criminal record and stiff financial penalty by using a possible rogue trader on the cheap?"It is these rogue traders who often create the disgusting fly-tips around the district which cost the council nearly £70,000 to clear up last year."But they often escape prosecution because their customers do not get a receipt for their services which includes verifiable contact details. It is then that householders face the consequences with prosecutions such as this. "If people do not want to see these unsightly heaps of rubbish by the roadside or risk a prosecution, then using licensed waste carriers will go some way to preventing both."

Fly tipped waste in Oakfield Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, above and below,

Woman Must Pay £430 After Waste was Fly-tippedA Mansfield woman has been ordered to pay £430 in fines and costs by magistrates after waste removed from her home by a scrap man was later found fly-tipped.

Innovative Plans to Tackle Mamba use in MansfieldMansfield District Council has become the first council in Nottinghamshire to take an innovative new approach to tackling antisocial behaviour caused by the drug Mamba. The council already has both homeless and mental health outreach workers helping members of the street community, but from this week they have been joined by an officer dedicated to dealing with substance misuse. This ground-breaking approach aims to break the cycle of dependence on Mamba and Spice as well as other drugs and alcohol, tackle the root causes of substance misuse and encourage users to make permanent changes to their lifestyle. The council has been working with the Police, and other partners including Framework, Change Grow Live (CGL) and Mansfield Homeless Network, in a bid to resolve the unprecedented issue of antisocial behaviour related to Mamba use in Mansfield Town Centre over this last year. The outreach workers get to know each individual so that they can offer tailored support in order to make life changes that will help the community by reducing antisocial behaviour and dependency on services.Changing long-standing habits is complicated and the first thing needed is willingness on the part of drug users to accept help and a desire to beat their addictions. This is one of the many difficulties faced by the outreach workers as their help is often turned down. Executive Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: “We can’t stress how seriously we are taking this issue as we understand the impact it is having on residents, businesses, market traders and visitors. We are using all the enforcement powers available to us, along with the Police who have made this their top priority - but enforcement alone doesn't work. "We have successfully helped a small number of people with complex needs turn their lives around in the past and we see this extra resource as key to building on this work."However, this isn't something that is going to be resolved overnight and we are constantly reviewing what we are doing and looking at what others are doing nationwide to ensure we are doing all we can."As well as the help and support for users, there are more police officers and Neighbourhood Wardens working in the Town Centre than ever before. The Police have one sergeant, six constables and four (soon increasing to six) PCSOs dedicated to the town centre issues. They are working closely with the council's Neighbourhood Wardens, Antisocial Behaviour officers, CCTV and Legal teams. Inspector Nick Butler said: "Although Mansfield town centre is safe statistically, we understand how people feel when they see people suffering the effects of drugs. Our increased police presence is about providing enforcement as well as reassurance and ensuring that the town is a happy and vibrant place for everyone. Mamba supply, possession and use along with rough sleeping and ASB remain a priority. We will continue to act on information received from the public in order to get positive results.”As of 14 September, the joint police and council town team have made, 43 arrests and issued 116 Direction To Leave notices. A drugs warrant conducted in the town centre last week resulted in two people being dealt with for possession of drugs. All this enforcement work will continue to send out the same message - that antisocial behaviour on the streets of Mansfield will not be tolerated.

The couple’s colourful floral displays, topiary and environmentally friendly approach to gardening at their home on the Grange Farm Estate impressed the judges who awarded them a Gold Award for the third year. The couple's garden was described as "absolutely fantastic".The judges added: "The planting throughout was a pleasure to see. We appear to be reviving the tradition of walking the Warsop parish boundary. In October 2016 we walked the entire boundary to mark the anniversary of the 1816 perambulation of Warsop Manor and last year we followed the western part. On Saturday 6th October we are planning to walk the section that in 1816 was called the 'Forest Round' following the boundary as closely as possible using public paths. We will meet in the Carrs car park at 10am before walking up Cuckney Hill to join the parish boundary. We will then head eastwards to Meden Vale and Hazel Gap then south through Birklands Forest to the Parliament Oak and Peafield Farm. By the time we have returned to Market Warsop we will have covered over 12 miles. You are welcome to join us but check our Facebook page or phone us (details below) in case there are any last minute changes. There is some good news regarding the Doorstep Green, the open space between Carter Lane and Wood Lane at Church Warsop. After a period of uncertainty over who was responsible for managing the area Nottinghamshire County Council will be caring for it. Once the broken play equipment has been removed and the overgrown trees and hedges have been cut back the likely maintenance will involve an annual mowing of the central grassland area and a couple of cuts along the paths. The Footpaths Group hope to continue mowing the paths and managing the hedge alongside the bridleway (as long as we have enough volunteers). Once the Doorstep Green is looking more loved it will be down to us in the local community to ensure that litter ends up in a bin, dog mess is picked up and the area is once again a great place to spend a relaxing few minutes.

Via East Midlands (who maintain Nottinghamshire's highways for the county council) have been improving the surface of the Bath Lane and Sookholme Lane byways. Hopefully this will enable us to walk along these attractive routes with dry feet after it has been raining! The dry summer has been disappointing for wildflowers and butterflies. The parched grasslands have supported fewer flowers than in previous years and those that have bloomed have been smaller than usual and have not lasted for long. I have seen few butterflies over summer and cannot recall having seen a Ringlet or a Speckled Wood this year. Ringlet numbers declined nationally last year and I suspect that there is no sign of a recovery locally. When I checked The Carrs wildflower area alongside the river I found most of the flowers that I had noted last year were still there but in smaller numbers. On a more positive note I have had two reports of water vole sightings along the river and I have spotted a kingfisher between Burns Bridge and the Hills & Holes on several occasions.

The Stage 7 winner, Ian Stannard, crossed the finish line shortly after 3.45pm after a rain and windswept 139-mile journey through Nottinghamshire from West Bridgford.Other participants included the eventual Tour of Britain 2018 winner Julian Alaphilippe, and the biggest current names in cycling, this year's Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas and multi Tour de France winner and current Giro d’Italia winner, Chris Froome.Despite the weather, spectators gathered at key points along the Mansfield route while the largest crowd lined the final kilometre down Chesterfield Road to the finish line outside the Civic Centre. Many wore Robin Hood hats, waved flags and banged the barriers to make as much noise as possible.

Thousands Welcome Tour of Britain Cyclists to MansfieldThousands of people lined the streets of Mansfield to welcome the Tour of Britain and 109 of the world’s top cyclists to the district for the second year in a row.

Executive Mayor Kate Allsop presents stage winner Ian Stannard with his prize

Cllr Dave Saunders, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Growth at Mansfield District Council, said: “For the second year in a row we have successfully demonstrated Mansfield’s ability to attract and host the Tour of Britain. "This is exactly the kind of major event we hope to bring to Mansfield more often in the future – for the benefit of businesses, residents and visitors as part of the council's wider vision to put Mansfield on the map as a good place to live, work,  visit, and invest in.“Thank you to everyone who supported us in bringing the Tour of Britain to Mansfield again. Not only does it encourage people to get more active and bring the local community together, it also showcases Mansfield to a global audience.“The first of our lasting legacies has already been created in the form of a wooden sculpture of a link from a bike’s chain but there are many more plans in the pipeline and these will be announced in due course.”  The Executive Mayor, Kate Allsop, presented the prize to Ian Stannard before cycling fans flocked to the Civic Centre car park in a bid to get selfies and autographs as the cyclists prepared to board their team buses for the journey to London.  Earlier in the day school children, women (as part of Mansfield Girls Can initiative) and families had the opportunity to cycle up and down the final 100m to the finish line ahead of the professionals. The Summer Festival Finale in Chesterfield Road Park featured free entertainment for all the family including live music, lots of cycling-related activities and sports taster sessions as well as circus skills and face painting. The council would like to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their patience and understanding during the unavoidable disruption created by hosting an event on this scale. It would also like to thank all the businesses and residents for their efforts in decorating the town with bikes, banners and bunting.Highlights of the event can be seen on the council's Facebook page, @mymansfielduk. There is also an opportunity for people to send feedback to the Tour of Britain organisers in a short online survey about the event at bit.ly/ToB18SS.

Sizzling Summer FestivalHundreds turned out to enjoy the first Mansfield Summer Festival of the year at King George V Park on Thursday 26 July. The sun shone down on families who enjoyed a day of fun activities including many with a cycling theme as Mansfield's involvement in the Tour of Britain race in September was launched at the event. Two Tour of Britain cyclists, Graham Briggs and Tobyn Horton turned up at the festival to help promote the race, meeting fans and posing for photos - they also joined in the Go Extreme bike agility sessions. Festival visitors were also able to enjoy live music, Punch and Judy shows, children's activities, arts and crafts and pony rides. White Post Farm stole the show with their petting zoo. In the Arena children took part in the Wobbly Olympics, balance workshops and mixed sports activities.  Executive Mayor Kate Allsop Portfolio Holder said: "It was great to see so many families getting out and enjoying some school holiday fun in one of our award-winning parks. Find out more about the festivals at www.mansfield.gov.uk/summerfestival.

Every branch that attended now has the honour of displaying the GP90 Scroll on their Standard. (left).

DANCE CLASSES

To paraphrase a (quite old) popular song. "What a difference a month makes."  From struggling to keep the essentials watered, we are now firmly fixed in the season of "mists and mellow fruitfulness", clearing out the greenhouse, lifting taters, chucking out or cutting back the old plants and filling pots and borders with winter pansies and bulbs. The Choir is also in mellow mode with preparations for Christmas well under way.  We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7-30pm until 9-00pm in the Concert Hall at the Dukeries Academy, Ollerton.  This is best accessed via the Leisure Centre entrance and car park.

Our Concert bookings so far are:Thursday 29th November 2018 - 5:00pmSinging in Edwinstowe High Street at the turning on of the Christmas LightsSaturday 8th   December 2018  - 7:00pmOur Annual Christmas Concert at the Jubilee Hall, Ollerton, atFriday 21st December  2018  - 6:15pmSinging at the Masonic Hall, MansfieldWe also have as yet, unconfirmed engagements on the gallop up to Christmas. So, If you would like the Choir to help you celebrate your own Christmas,  Charity,  Fund raising  event or just  "a bit of a do,"  our Concert  Secretary Phil. on  01623 822070 would be delighted to hear from you.Our website address is  thedukeriessingers.com    You can also find us on  Facebook,  Twitter  and  YouTubeA  bounteous  and colourful Autumn to you all.
