Music Notes

’Tis the Season’—Sounds echoing around the church these days remind us that another Advent and Christmas Season is almost here. Preparation has been taking place for weeks to make this a joyous celebration of the birth of our Savior through music and worship.

This year’s calendar allows us to celebrate “Christ the King” Sunday following Thanksgiving and then move into Advent on the First Sunday of December. Advent Season will be full of wonderful music and worship experiences presented by all of our choirs and ensembles.

Family Advent Night will feature our Children’s Choirs; Adventures in Learning attendees will be entertained by the music of Jubilate Ensemble; worshippers on Sunday, December 10 will hear the strains

of “Sing Joy to the World”, a cantata with choir, soloists, and full orchestra; combined worship services on December 17 and 24 will include music by First Awakening band and singers; Carols and Candles on Sunday Evening the 17th, will follow our usual “Lessons and Carols” format with music by choirs, handbells, children, chamber orchestra and ensembles, concluding with the candlelight service as we take the light into the world to share with all.

What a season of joy and beauty is being planned to enhance all of our worship services throughout the season! Let’s put these dates on our calendars right now and begin to prepare our hearts for the season as we anticipate celebrating the coming of our Savior to earth.

Mission CornerSERVING OPPORTUNITIES

God Moments through the Blessing Boxby Scott Murray

If you haven't noticed yet, there is a little white box sitting to the left of the portico in the rear parking lot of our church. It has written on the front, “Take what you need. Bring what you can. Above all be blessed.”

I was asked to share stories that have taken place at this little box…little “God Moments”.

• I could share the story about a woman asking a church member if the items in the box were available for anyone and was visibly relieved when she could grab a few items to make dinner.

• I could share a story about a gentleman who discovered the box empty when he looked inside needing food, but stayed to see if he could help someone who was having trouble with their car.

• I could share the story about a person

who witnessed another person, who obviously appeared to be in need, place items in the box for others.

• I could share a story about a man far from home who left a prayer request for us to call and pray for his ailing mother. He also wrote a “thank you” for the food he gathered from the Blessing Box.

Instead, I would like to challenge you to discover “God Moments” while interacting with this little white box. Brochures with more information are in the foyer just inside the doors.

Thoughts on Gratitude

“Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many- not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”

- Charles Dickens, 1812-1870

“To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything He has given us…and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him.”

- Thomas MertonThoughts on Solitude

“Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don’t unravel.”

(Unknown)

“Lord, help me to be grateful for what I have, to remember that I don’t need most of what I want, and that joy is found in simplicity and generosity.”

- Adam Hamilton

Worship Committee MeetingOctober 24, 2017

Greetings to the faithful!

First let me say thank you for a great meeting Tuesday evening. Getting such a congenial, yet energetic group together like this one has been long in coming ... but worth the wait.

The first question for us to ponder was what is our purpose and in what specific ways can we best serve the church?

A definition as to our purpose is as follows: the Worship Committee is to give support to our Worship Staff in creating meaningful and Spirit-led ways of engaging the congregation in experiencing the worship of God through music, scripture, prayer and preaching.

It was decided that this committee would be overseen by the Minister of Music and Worship Arts, Margaret Harrison and our Senior Pastor, Sky McCracken.

We are considered the "eyes and ears" of the congregation and of both Sunday morning Worship Services. It was suggested that the congregation know who the committee people are by placing the names in the bulletin a few times and on the screen before First Awakening?

It was also suggested that a representative from Communion, Altar Guild, Ushers, and AV be part of the Worship Committee to best capitalize on good communication practices. There was a strong consensus that the Worship Committee work closely with Altar Guild, particularly during the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

In addition, a discussion was raised about

children and their understanding of the Lord's Supper.

Some felt that our children needed to be better prepared to receive communion during our worship services.

Two suggestions to remedy this would be to offer our children, ages 3-6 years, age appropriate materials that could be taught explaining the reasons for communion and how to receive it with reverence. A second consideration was to serve the children during Children's Church. These two thoughts are not mutually exclusive. Why not creatively teach our children about Communion regardless as to where it is received . A search into curriculum for this age group was suggested.

One very exciting discussion Tuesday evening was our need to revitalize the Prayer Ministry. Anyone involved in the prayer ministry of recent past knows how essential it was to the overall spiritual health and mission of the church. In fact, we can have NO mission or ministry without it! It was suggested that the Prayer Ministry would fall under the "pillar" of Worship. More on this later.

Before we adjourned for the evening it was decided that we would meet quarterly unless a need arose requiring our attention. Mike McCarty has agreed to invite a couple more persons from the First Awakening service to join this committee. Good things are happening! May God direct our steps.

Blessings,

Sally Rainey, ChairWorship Committee

Worship Committee Members: Elizabeth Atkins, Jennie Longmire, Sue Harvey,

Lorie White, and Mike McCarty.

Church Council Newsby Bobbie MaysDirector of Communications

Church Council met November 6 and the main topics of conversation were security and Andrews Chapel. Trustees Chair, Jev Vaughan, shared the future for Andrews Chapel has not yet been determined. The Trustees would appreciate any comments from the congregation on what to do with Andrews Chapel. Please share any thoughts with Jev by Jan.1, 2018.

Security was discussed in light of recent church tragedies in the news. There were a number of concerns brought up about churches being a target. What are we doing? Sky McCracken recently met with Will Dougan, owner of Golden Triangle Defensive Tactics in Memphis for a walk-through of the church for a security check. With several areas needing to be addressed, this company provides training for churches and will be meeting soon with the Trustees. Meanwhile, immediate measures are taking place for the safety and security of our congregation.

Committee reports shared were from SPRC, Finance, Trustees, Missions, Youth, Children’s Ministry, Senior Council, Congregational Care, Men at First, Adultivities and Women at First.
