The Challenge – Enough Clean WaterWater-related diseases are a
growing human tragedy, killing more than 5 million people each year - 10 times the number of people killed in wars. About 2.3 billion people suffer from diseases linked to dirty water. Some 60% of all infant mortality worldwide is linked to infectious and parasitic diseases, most of them water-related.

In the African countries, it is usually the women and children who fetch the water from the river, often several miles away.
![Page 5: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
These children have just returned from getting their jugs of water from the river, over a mile away. Oops! Spilled some!

Here is what they look like
![Page 9: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
We can do it two ways: give the filter or give the means to make the filters.
This filter is being used at Kaimosi hospital.
These filters are being made to sell in a micro business.
![Page 10: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Thanks to High Point Friends in North Carolina, filters are now being used in many places. There’s always a need for more.
Here is one at a school in the Turkana desert.
This one is the home of FTC Principal, Ann Riggs.
![Page 11: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
From dirty water to clean in minutes! Yes, it’s been tested many times!
![Page 12: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
How much does it cost?$50 will buy a
water filter that will provide clean water for a family.
$3500 will set up a micro-business and includes a steel mold, materials and training. One mold can produce 15 to 20 filters in a month.
![Page 13: FUM Water for Life VBS Project 2010](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062404/553added4a79593e2c8b45eb/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Rain Collection Tanks provide an easy water source.

So, from $300 up, depending on the size, a tanks can be installed.

Wells are a luxury for people in rural areas. This one serves the Chwele Girls School.

Drilling a bore hole (well) is very expensive, but builds community among the desert folk. This one is in Lokoyo, Turkana. In February 2011, another one was contracted, thanks to this water project. We expect it to cost $20,000.
