Dear LeadingAge Florida members,

Thank you for joining us for our virtual 57th Annual Convention & Exposition! As it has for our members, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us to rethink and reimagine ways to serve you during these extraordinary times. Our first-ever virtual convention represents just such a reimagining.

Over the course of three days, we’ll bring you an internationally known and best-selling keynote speaker, more than 60 continuing education sessions, opportunities to meet with more than 70 exhibitors, daily networking sessions, meditation and other relaxation breaks, our very popular roundtable sessions, and even our Fun Night event – all delivered directly to you.

If you aren’t able to join us for any of these events during our Convention, I hope you’ll take advantage of our on-demand options. All sessions will be available on-demand for three weeks after the close of the Convention, providing even greater, extended opportunities for you to learn the latest from the most innovative minds in senior living.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Continuing Education InformationEarn up to 20 hours during our Virtual Convention! Plus, attendees have the opportunity to view sessions on-demand after the convention (through September 18) and earn an additional 40 CE hours!

Filing of Continuing Education Credits

LeadingAge Florida will upload credits to CE Broker for Florida licensees within 30 business days after the Convention.Housing professionals will use the printed Certificate of Attendance as a record of Housing sessions attended.

Additionally, LeadingAge Florida has applied to provide CEUs through the National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) for select courses; attendees wanting certification through NAB must have an account with NAB; visit: https://www.nabweb.org/manage-my-account to create an account; you can then access the CE registry. LeadingAge Florida will report NAB credit earned at the Convention to the CE registry if we have the NAB ID number for the licensee. LeadingAge Florida is an approved CEU provider for nursing home administrators (#FNHAP-18), nurses (#FBN-2192) and clinical social workers (#BAP-684). LeadingAge Florida is an approved SHRM Recertification Provider. Earn up to 20 hours of CE credit by attending the Virtual Convention.

Entry into virtual sessions will be tracked with your log-in credentials to verify attendance and ensure certification of earned CEUs. After the Convention, attendees will receive an email to review session attendance. Attendees can print a personalized CEU Certificate of Attendance.

Social isolation and loneliness affect over half of seniors living in care. Typically, the same 30% of residents come to programs and the other 70% refuse invitations no matter what is on the calendar.

Many residents have trouble making meaningful connections with their peers without support. Programs offered provide enjoyment for some, but social isolation persists, and lack of resident input perpetuates the stereotype of residents as passive recipients of care. Residents continue to report lack of meaning, limited opportunities for contribution and frustration with paternalistic communication with staff. Social isolation negatively impacts mental health, health behaviors, physical health, falls and mortality—accelerating a residents’ need for assistance.

Residents themselves, however, represent an untapped resource to address these issues. Peer support and peer mentoring offers a model that gives residents the capacity to develop a positive culture of helping others. This approach is innovative as it has the potential to reduce rates of social isolation among residents being supported

and among residents doing the supporting. In addition, these outcomes are associated with reduced healthcare costs due to a decreased risk of falls, dementia, staff burden and burnout.

Imagine a home where residents join with volunteers and staff and learn how to build emotional connections with their fellow residents.

This session will present an evidence-based innovative peer support and mentoring program that has demonstrated a 60% increase in engagement of socially isolated residents as well as significant reductions in loneliness and depression.

These infections are increasingly becoming antimicrobial resistant and lethal, causing over 380,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Infection control programs in long term care are “works in progress” with unresolved epidemiological and ethical issues.

The purpose of the session is to familiarize participants with the main pathogens, antibiotics and infection control tools. The session will include small group ethical case studies and a discussion of real-world programs to improve infection control across the continuum of care.

Safe and effective geriatric medication management involves much more than simply administering “what the doctor ordered”. Drugs used to treat both chronic and acute conditions in the elderly provide powerful benefits but also carry significant risk. Assisted living providers have an obligation to partner with the resident, their surrogate decision makers, the prescriber, and pharmacy staff to identify and minimize those risks.

This presentation, through the use of case studies and group discussion, will examine classes of drugs that are considered high risk when administered to the elderly. Emphasis will be placed on drug classes undergoing current scrutiny such as antibiotics, psychotropic, and opioids. Lastly, a resident-centered approach to managing such drugs will be discussed.

Care Robots have the potential to increase the productivity of caregivers and to provide emotional support and companionship. Additionally, care robots can serve as effective accountability partners with respect to medication adherence and physical exercise. Experiments with robotic pets in memory units have proven to reduce anxiety and reduce the use of psychotropic medications.

We will learn about the three categories of care robots, and discuss what promoters and critics of such devices have to say.

Survey Drama: Please Come Back Next WeekThis presentation brings together owners, operators, administrators and staff to discuss the survey process and the various notices, complaints, and sanctions received from the Agency for Health Care Administration after inspections. The presenter will provide information that will help attendees understand an Agency action letter; and the legal implications that can occur after an inappropriate response.

The presentation will provide real examples of actions taken by the Agency and engage the audience concerning their perspective of what could have been done differently. The presentation will seek input from the audience as to best practices they implement in their communities to prevent some of the Agency’s most common citations. The audience will walk through a sample plan of correction, the decision processes that owners and operators should use in order to determine the correct response to various Agency notices, administrative complaints, and survey findings.

Participants will be provided with actionable insight, new tactics and a best practices that will allow them to respond to notices appropriately; recognize and develop effective plans of corrections; understand the importance of a team approach to decreasing citations; improve survey compliance on follow-up surveys.
