SCOUTING THE OPPOSITIONThe Redhawks of Miami University come in with a 2-5 overall record, but have won two of their last three games, including an impressive 59-56 win against Wright State. They are paced by senior forward Will Felder, who leads the team in points (13.6) and rebounds (6.6) per game. Sophomore guard Reggie Johnson ranks second on the squad with 13.4 points an outing, while fellow backcourt classmate Geovonie McNight puts up 11 a game. As a team the Redhawks are very similar to the ‘Roos statistically. They don’t shoot it well from the outside, and play a high pressure style that forces opponents into turnovers (14.1 per game). They average 64 points a contest, while giving up 75.3 a game. They also average 9 steals a game.

THE COACHESKareem Richardson is in his first season as the head coach at UMKC, posting a 2-7 record. He was named the sixth coach in the Division I era on March 19, 2013 after helping Louisville to a National Championship last season as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino. He brings 13 years of Division I coaching experience to the fold, as well as four years playing at the Division I level, graduating from Evansville in 1997. John Cooper is in his second season at Miami, and has an 11-27 overall record there. His record as a head coach is 54-78 in five seasons. A graduate of Wichita State and native of Kansas City, he led the Shockers in scoring and rebounding during his junior and senior seasons.

THE SERIES Miami Univ. and Kansas City have never played each other as Division I schools in men’s basketball. The ‘Roos have historically not played many teams from the MAC, but the last was against Central Michigan in 2006 (lost on road, 85-68), The previous year at home, UMKC defeated Central Michigan 75-65. A WIN WOULD MEAN...- Kansas City would have earned its first win at Municipal Auditorium this season.- The ‘Roos would have defeated a MAC team for the first time since November 26, 2005.

UP NEXTThe ‘Roos will head back out on the road for a contest at Wright State Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. CT, in a return for the 2012 Bracketbuster game in Kansas City. Kansas City and Wright State have played three times, with the Raiders holding a 3-0 advantage in the series. The first two meetings came back in 1991, while WSU took a 76-62 win at UMKC on Feb. 18, 2012.

KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONThe ‘Roos roster this season is loaded with local players. In fact, the seven players from the Kansas City area on the roster are the most ever on a UMKC roster in the Division I era (1987). The local players include Trinity Hall, Martez Harrison, Reese Holliday, Isaac Kreuer, Aaron Washington, Mason Wedel and Frank Williams.

KIRKSEY COMES ALIVESenior forward Nelson Kirksey has gained steam as the year has gone in the new system. He averaged 19 points a contest and earned College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week for his performance against UL and YSU. He had a career-best 24 points in the win against Youngstown State. In the last four games, he has averaged 16.5 points per outing.

DIAPER DANDYFreshman Martez Harrison got the start in the first nine games, and became the first freshman to start on opening day for UMKC since 2008 when Trey McKinney-Jones and Dustin Dibble opened the season on the court against North Dakota (11/14/08). Harrison led UMKC with 20 points in his debut, and came just one free throw attempt away from tying the school record of 22, set by Tony Dumas in in 1994. That total is the highest in the WAC this season. Also, his 28 points against Milwaukee were the most in a game for a freshman since Michael Watson had 28 on February 12, 2001. He set a career-high with eight assists against Youngstown State as well. He has scored double figure points in each game, and had 20+ in four contests.

WAC RANKSThe ‘Roos lead the league in steals per contest (9.2). Individually, Martez Harrison is first the WAC with 2.0 steals per game, while ranking third in the league in scoring (17.4) and seventh in assists (3.1). Trinity Hall is fourth in rebounding at 7.3 per game, while Fred Chatmon ranks fourth in the conference with a .537 field goal percentage.

REBOUNDING HALL The ‘Roos have been led this season by senior forward Trinity Hall on the boards, He is averaging 7.3 per game, including double-digits twice. The 11 rebounds vs. ESU and UTM matched a career best.

The ‘Roos are also averaging 9.2 steals per game (83 total). That average leads the WAC and ranks number 17 in the nation.

TOP 50 SCORERSSeniors Kirk Korver and Trinity Hall are both ranked in the top 50 in all-time scoring coming into the season. Hall is ranked No. 19 with 727 points, while Korver is 33rd with 559 points. Hall is also sixth all-time in blocks with 62 during his career.

CHATMON IN THE CHARTS Junior center Fred Chatmon ranked fourth in the league last season, and is currently pulling down 6.0 boards a game this year. He put up back-to-back 20 point games for the first time in his career, and logged his fifth career double-double vs. UT-Martin, earning WAC Player of the Week in the win. His 212 rebounds last year ranked seventh in school history for a single season, while his 7.3 average sits ninth in the record books. His eight career double-digit rebounding games are good for seventh all-time at UMKC. Chatmon’s 16 rebounds vs. Kansas State last season were the most against a BCS conference team since Lonni Alexander grabbed 17 against Texas A&M on December 20, 1996.

3-POINT STREAKUMKC has made at least one three-point basket in 408 consecutive regular season or tournament

games dating back to Jan. 22, 2000.

RULE CHANGES=FOULSThe new emphasis on officials calling hand checks has been a tough adjustment for all teams this season. UMKC set a school record for free throw attempts at 53 in the season opener. UMKC has committed 201 fouls in its regular season games (22.3 fpg).

CAPTAINS The ‘Roos named three team captains this season, all seniors. Trinity Hall, Nelson Kirksey and Fred Chatmon were given the opportunity to lead the 2013-14 squad.

PRESEASON RECOGNITIONNelson Kirksey was named a preseason second-team all-league selection by College Sports Madness, while Frank Williams was a fourth-team pick.

WAC PRESEASON POLLThe WAC media and coaches selected the ‘Roos eighth and ninth, respectively. The polls were released at the annual WAC Basketball Preview in Las Vegas, Nevada at Orleans Arena, the site of the 2014 WAC Basketball Tournament. Defending WAC tournament champion New Mexico State was the unanimous pick to win the league in both polls, while Aggies junior guard Daniel Mullings was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year by both the coaches and media. UMKC did not have any student-athletes selected to the preseason all-conference teams.

IT’S A FAMILY THINGUMKC junior Kirk Korver is the fourth son of Kevin and Laine Korver to suit up the sneakers to play Division I basketball. Oldest brother Kyle was an All-America selection at Creighton, where he played from 1999-2003, and is currently a member of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Klayton played at Drake from 2003-08, where he was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history, and Kaleb also played at Creighton from 2007-2011. Basketball is in the blood for the Korver family as mother, Laine, once scored 73 points in a game in high school.

KANSAS CITY / UMKCUMKC has changed its acceptable usage guide. “Kansas City” has been added to the list of acceptable references to athletics, joining UMKC, Kangaroos and ‘Roos. Media are encouraged to use ‘Kansas City’ as a primary reference, and ‘UMKC’ as a secondary reference.

LAST TIME OUT(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC men’s basketball squad took a lead into the halftime break against Indiana State on Saturday, but an early second period run proved to be the difference in a 74-63 road win for the Sycamores at Municipal Auditorium.

“I thought that the way they started off in the second half really hurt us,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “I like the way we battled back in the first half, but we have to put together playing that hard in longer stretches.”

The Sycamores (7-2) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the opening eight minutes, but Kansas City (2-7) rallied quickly, going on a 10-2 run in less than two minutes to get within one. Indiana State held on to the lead until the 6:22 mark though, when UMKC freshman Martez Harrison hit the ‘Roos only three of the half to get their first advantage of the game, 23-22.

The ‘Roos pushed their lead to as many as five on three different occasions down the stretch, and took a 36-34 advantage into the break. Harrison was the star, scoring 14 points, while senior Trinity Hall tallied 10 points for UMKC in the half. Both teams shot 40 percent, but UMKC got to the line four more times, and had a 23-18 advantage on the boards.

The game-changing rally was in the early part of the second stanza starting at the 17:46 mark. It turned into a 17-2 run for the Sycamores and it stretched their lead to 55-42 with 12:29 to play. They took advantage of some lackluster defense by the ‘Roos, hitting 8 of its first 10 shots.

The Kangaroos could only get within eight after that, as ISU kept them at arm’s reach the rest of the way. The Sycamores shot 57 percent in the half, while UMKC could only muster 28 percent shooting, and an 11-of-21 performance from the line. As a result, ISU out-rebounded the ‘Roos 22-9 in the half.

The Sycamores were led by Kansas City native Dawon Cummings, who scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Justin Gant had 13 points, while Demetrius Moore tallied 10. Both pulled down seven boards as well.

Harrison led the ‘Roos with 20 points, his ninth straight game in double digits and fourth 20-plus point contest. Hall finished with 16 points, while Nelson Kirksey was the other player in double figures with 11. Fred Chatmon led the way with eight rebounds.

Kareem Richardson was named the head coach at UMKC on March 19, 2013, becoming the sixth in the Division I era at UMKC.

Richardson is a collegiate coaching veteran and most recently served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under legendary coach Rick Pitino. He helped the Cardinals to the Big East tournament crown and the NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed, on the way to the 2012-13 National Championship.

Richardson also spent a season at UMKC in 2007-08 as an assistant. He has played and coached in the region, and has helped bring in well-ranked recruiting classes at every school during his coaching career.

“It is an honor and privilege to be named the next head coach at UMKC. Being at the University of Louisville and working under a Hall of Famer in Coach Pitino, it had to take a special situation for me to leave, but I know the vision that Leo Morton has for the program makes UMKC a special situation,” Richardson said. “It is extremely exciting to have the opportunity to lead the UMKC men’s basketball program and to be back in the wonderful city of Kansas City.”

“Our goal is to win the attention, and the hearts, of Kansas City sports fans,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton. “Kansas City is the best college basketball town in the country, and UMKC is Kansas City’s university. We believe Kareem Richardson can lead a program that will connect with the sports fans of Kansas City.”

Prior to his year at Louisville, Richardson made the most of one season at Xavier, helping the Musketeers reach the NCAA Sweet 16 and the finals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament that season while posting a 23-12 record. He helped the Musketeers land a Top 20 recruiting class in 2011.

Richardson, 39, had joined Xavier from Drake University, where he had been the head assistant coach for three seasons. He has also served on the basketball staffs at Evansville, Indiana State, Wright State and Indianapolis.

Richardson has been ranked as one of the top assistants in college basketball according to the basketball website Collegeinsider.com. He earned a reputation as a top-level recruiter during his time at Drake, serving as recruiting coordinator and helping head coach Mark Phelps secure the top-rated recruited class in the Missouri Valley Conference in two of his three years there. In his first year as assistant coach at Drake, Richardson helped lead the Bulldogs to post-season play during the 2008-09 season, in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Prior to Drake, Richardson was the top assistant with the UMKC men’s basketball program for the 2007-08 season. Richardson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater Evansville from 2003-07, one season (2002-03) at Wright State, as well as a stint at Indiana State (1999-2002). Richardson’s coaching career began at the University of Indianapolis from 1997-99.

Richardson helped Indiana State enjoy success. In 2000, he guided the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Larry Bird era in the late 1970s. A year later in 2001, Indiana State topped No. 4 seed Oklahoma to advance to the second round of the NCAAs.

As a player, Richardson played in an NCAA Tournament as a freshman at East Carolina University. He then transferred to Evansville in 1995 and quickly established himself as the Purple Aces’ top point guard. Richardson, who was a team captain two years, was selected to the Missouri Valley Conference all-academic team in both 1996 and 1997. In 1996, he received notoriety on the MVC all-underrated team. He was a first team all-state selection at Rantoul (Ill.) Township High School in 1992 and was twice named conference player of the year.

Richardson, who was born in Tacoma, Wash., graduated from Evansville with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunication and interpersonal communication in 1997 and received his MBA from the University of Indianapolis in 1999.

He and his wife, Greta, have three children, Jasmiyn, Amari and Andre.

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC men’s basketball team set a school record with 53 free throw attempts on Friday afternoon against Emporia State, but only 66 percent made it in the bucket as the Hornets spoiled the ‘Roos season opener, 81-76. The previous record was 52 free throw attempts against Tennessee State on January 8, 1990. The ‘Roos (0-1) struggled to score in the game, hitting only 35.8 percent of its shots from the floor. They did out-rebound the Hornets 42-36 and force 20 miscues, but in the end ESU hit 10 more shots and tallied 42 points in the paint. UMKC had the early lead in the outing, going up 21-14 in the first 10 minutes, and held a six points advantage with 5:24 left in the opening period, but the Hornets closed the stanza on a 16-5 rally to go into the break up by a 36-32 score. The only difference in the period was a 9-3 margin in favor of the Hornets in second-chance points. Senior Trinity Hall and freshman Martez Harrison each tallied nine points to lead the ‘Roos, while ESU was paced by Kaleb Wright with 11 points. Harrison did have his miscues though, making 5 of the 10 UMKC turnovers. The ‘Roos came out firing in the second half, and got the score tied at 42 on a bucket by Nelson Kirksey with 17:44 on the clock, but the Hornets answered with a 9-1 rally to get the lead back. UMKC kept it within striking distance, with the largest margin coming at 14 with 6:47 on the clock. Kansas City cut it to seven by the 3:25 mark on a Hall dunk, and chipped it down to three with 40 seconds left, but the Hornets’ Paul Bunch got free under the bucket with 28 seconds remaining as they beat the UMKC press to virtually seal it. Bunch had a huge half, scoring 15 points and pulling down five boards with four blocks. He answered every ‘Roos run in the contest. ESU tallied 26 of its 45 second period points in the paint. Kansas City was paced by Harrison with 20 points in his first college game, despite six turnovers and 12-of-21 shooting from the line, while Hall tallied his fourth career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. His rebound total matched a career best. Kirksey was the third ‘Roo in double figures with 13 points. As a team the ‘Roos had 14 steals in the contest, but only had eight assists compared to 20 turnovers. The Hornets shot 46 percent in the contest, and went 18-of-23 from the line.

(Omaha, Neb.) - The UMKC men’s basketball team held a two point lead more than half way through the opening period at Creighton on Monday, but All-American Doug McDermott led the Bluejays on a run to end the half on the way to a 96-70 victory. Kansas City (0-2) shot only 37.7 percent in the game, while Creighton (2-0) hit 51.5 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the ‘Roos 51-35. McDermott finished the night with 37 points and seven rebounds. McDermott put on a show in the opening half, hitting 10-of-15 shots for 25 points. Even with his performance, Kansas City was right in it, overcoming an early 16-8 deficit to lead 19-18 with 10:11 on the clock on a fastbreak steal and layup by freshman Martez Harrison. Harrison picked up his second foul on the following play, forcing him to sit down though, and Creighton made a run. After CU took the lead 21-20, the ‘Roos got a three-pointer from senior Caleb Johnson, to go up two with 7:35 on the clock. Creighton answered that bucket with a 15-2 run, paced by seven points from McDermott over the next six minutes. “That was big when he went out of the game,” Richardson said. “It seemed like the momentum changed so quickly, but you have to give credit to Creighton, they are a very good ball club and do a great job of sharing the basketball.” The Bluejays went into the half with a 48-31 advantage after banking in a three at the buzzer by guard Austin Chatman. Trinity Hall led the ‘Roos with nine points in the half, while Nelson Kirksey tallied eight. CU shot 52.9 percent in the period while UMKC hit only 31.4 percent. Creighton also out-scored the ‘Roos 22-8 in the paint during the half. The ‘Roos stayed pretty even with CU over the first eight minutes of the second stanza, but the Bluejays rallied to push the score to as many as 28 with 6:07 to play. Kansas City allowed the Creighton to score 48 in each half though, and the home squad shot better than 50 percent in both halves. UMKC did turn the Bluejays over 14 times, but CU had 27 assists, including nine with no turnovers for Chatman to go with his 12 points. “We did a much better job with our turnovers this game as opposed to Emporia, only turning the ball over eight times, and that was an emphasis this week,” Richardson said. “Obviously there are a lot of things we have to improve on, especially on the defensive end.” The ‘Roos had five players in double figures, led by Hall with 15, while Harrison tallied 12, Frank Williams had 11, Kirksey had 10, and freshman center Isaac Kreuer had a career-best 10 points and eight rebounds.

(Omaha, Neb.) – The Omaha men’s basketball squad jumped out to a huge first half lead and coasted on Wednesday night against UMKC, taking a 101-71 victory in its home opener. The Mavericks (2-1) shot 54 percent and turned the ‘Roos (0-3) over 12 times, leading to 16 points, including 11 on the fast break to build a huge lead in the opening half. The Mavs also held UMKC to 33 percent shooting in the period. UNO started the game on a 24-6 run, and built the lead to as many as 32 before taking a 57-27 advantage into the half.

“Omaha did a heck of a job, especially their guards,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “We did not execute our game plan… It’s part of the growth of our ball club and the new system for guys. We will just keep chipping away and hopefully we learn from these things.”

A big part of the half for UNO was leading scorer CJ Carter, who had 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He was backed up by post John Karhoff, who went 6-of-7 from the floor with 12 points.

The second half was a 44-44 tie, but UMKC still allowed the Mavs to shoot 52 percent. Kansas City forced UNO into 11 turnovers, while pulling down 10 offensive rebounds, giving a much better effort in the final 20 minutes.

The bright spot was senior Fred Chatmon on the inside, scoring a career-best 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The other two players in double figures for UMKC were John Burke with 12 points and Martez Harrison with 11.

Kansas City had 20 turnovers in the outing, while shooting 40.9 percent. The second stanza saw UMKC shoot 47 percent from the floor. The ‘Roos continued to steal the ball at a high rate, snagging 15 in the game, the most since 2004.

(Martin, Tenn.) – Kansas City men’s basketball got its first win in the tenure of Kareem Richardson by a 79-67 margin at UT-Martin behind a double-double of 20 points and 12 boards by senior Fred Chatmon.

“We really challenged him the last few games, and he answered the bell,” Richardson said of Chatmon. “We need him to have double-doubles for us, and we feel he can be that type of player.”

The Skyhawks (1-5) jumped out to a quick 15-9 lead in the first seven-plus min-utes, but the ‘Roos (1-3) used defense and got the ball inside to answer, going on a 9-2 run to take their first lead with 10:21 on the clock on a Chatmon layup.

The Skyhawks briefly regained the advantage at 20-19 a couple minutes later, but a Chatmon dunk at the 9:22 mark gave the lead to UMKC for good. Kansas City got UT-Martin into foul trouble, and used the advantage to make a run at the 6:36 mark. A 16-1 run over the next four minutes, led by eight points from freshman Martez Harrison gave the ‘Roos a 40-24 lead. They took a 42-30 advantage into the half, though.

Harrison led UMKC with 10 points, while Chatmon piled up 10. Senior Trinity Hall led the ‘Roos on the glass with eight boards. Kansas City shot 57 percent, while holding UTM to only 33 percent shooting. The ‘Roos also had 12 assists and 13 points off 10 UTM turnovers.

As expected, UTM stormed out of the locker room on a 13-5 run, cutting the margin to only four points with 15:28 on the clock. Kansas City didn’t panic though, and got a three-pointer from junior Frank Williams to put it back to seven. The UTM second half push was mostly due to its offensive rebounding, as they pulled down 10 for 11 second-chance points.

The Skyhawks made another short run, and clipped the lead down to one with 10:49 on the clock at 55-54. The ‘Roos rallied again to keep the lead, and went on a 10-2 spurt capped by a Harrison fastbreak layup to make it 67-58 with 6:12 left. UTM got it back to only two with 3:59 left, but the Kansas City defense held the Skyhawks scoreless the rest of the way and sealed the 12-point victory.

“I was really proud of our defensive improvement tonight.” Richardson said when asked about the game’s biggest factor.

Kansas City was led by Chatmon’s fifth career double-double, while Harrison matched his 20 point effort as well as snagging three steals, despite eight turnovers. Williams finished with 12 points, while Nelson Kirksey put up 11 on the night. Also tallying a career-high was Hall, who had 11 rebounds in a stellar defensive effort.

“He is demanding (hard play) from the guys,” Richardson said of Hall. “He has been our vocal leader, and the work that he did on the glass was tremendous, I mean he got some tough rebounds on the defensive end.”

(Ames, Iowa) – Kansas City cut the margin to six with 11:04 left in the opening half, but No. 17 Iowa State closed the period on a 33-4 run and never looked back on Monday night in a 110-51 rout in men’s basketball action.

Iowa State (5-0) was red-hot from three to start the game, jumping out to a 14-4 lead on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Injury-riddled Kansas City (1-4) settled down after that though, and got buckets from Martez Harrison and Fred Chatmon on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 19-13 by the 11 minute mark. The foul trouble hit after that as Harrison picked up his third, playing just nine minutes in the period.

That would be the closest it would get though, as ISU scored the game’s next 27 points over a span of seven minutes to seal it. The ‘Roos could muster only four points in the final 11 minutes of the half, and trailed 52-17 at the break.

ISU shot 51.6 percent in the period, while holding Kansas City to just 22.2 percent, including a 1-of-14 clip from three-point range. The Cyclones also hit 7-of-16 from three in the half and out-rebounded UMKC by a 29-11 margin. DeAndre Kane led all scorers with 12 at the break for ISU.

“I told our guys that the beauty of this, if there is any, is that it is only November,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “We will get better if stay together and learn from each game. Iowa State is a very difficult team to play against. They have five guys on the floor that can really shoot the basketball, and they hit shots tonight.”

The final half saw the ‘Roos improve offensively, but they allowed the Cyclones to hit 51 percent again, while taking a 30-20 edge on the glass.

Harrison scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the second half, while Nelson Kirksey tallied eight of his 11 in the final period. Kansas City finished with 29.5 percent shooting, while playing without its top three-point shooter in Frank Williams, who sat out due to injury.

The 59-point loss was the largest margin in school history, snapping the mark of 54 against Kansas in 2003. UMKC also dropped to 0-18 against ranked opponents all-time.

(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC men’s basketball found something on Saturday night, coming from 17 points back late in the first half to take a lead early in the second period, but in the end UW-Milwaukee pulled out an 84-79 win.

“I was really proud of our effort today,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “We played hard, but we have to learn to play with that energy in longer spurts.”

The ‘Roos (1-5) trailed the Panthers (7-2) 41-24 with 1:15 left in the first period, but used a 5-0 spurt to close the stanza, including a half-court buzzer-beater by freshman Martez Harrison going into the break. They came out in the second right where they left off, expanding the run to 27-9 over a span of 5:12 to take a 51-50 lead with 15:10 to play. The ‘Roos forced four turnovers during that rally, and 25 of the points came from the trio of Trinity Hall, Nelson Kirksey, and Harrison.

UWM quickly took the lead back and moved it as many as six, but Kansas City had another answer at the 8:58 mark when Harrison got back-to-back layups plus the foul in a span of 10 seconds. He cut it to one, but the ‘Roos got the lead with 8:04 to play on a Caleb Johnson dunk after a scramble at 65-64.

The lead changed hands once more before Kansas City grabbed its larg-est lead of the game at 70-66 with 5:08 to play. The ‘Roos held on to the advantage until the 2:45 mark when UWM’s Matt Tiby hit two free throws to get the lead back for good. The Panthers hit 8-of-10 from the line in the final 1:04 to seal it.

Milwaukee built its first half lead due to the play of guard Jordan Aaron, who went off for 20 points in the period on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Harrison led the ‘Roos with 12 at the break. The Panthers were unconscious shooting in the half, hitting 71.4 percent, while UMKC hit 52.2 percent.

The Panthers built their 17-point lead due to an 18-4 run that took only four minutes late in the first half. With 5:36 to play in the period, UMKC trailed by only three.

The difference in the second stanza for UMKC was the offensive outburst in the paint, scoring 34 of its 50 points inside. UWM still shot 58 percent in the half and 65 for the game, including 53 percent from beyond the arc and 24 free throws that all contributed to the win.

Kansas City hit 56.4 percent in the game, but only 59 percent from the line and 1-of-10 from three (the half-court shot). Harrison finished with a career-high 28 points, the most for a ‘Roo since Reggie Chamberlain had 30 on December 3, 2011 at Oakland. Hall tallied 19 points, while Kirksey had a season-high 17, 13 of which came in the second half.

(Louisville, Ky.) – The No. 7 Louisville Cardinals took advantage of the Kansas City ‘Roos on the glass Wednesday night, leading the entire way and taking a 90-62 win in the first game for head coach Kareem Richardson back at his former school.

“The guys played with tremendous effort tonight, and I was proud of them for that,” Richardson said. “To be honest, we were really able to contain their first shot on defense, but gave up too many offensive rebounds and second chance points... They are the defending champs for a reason and they have a chance to make a run again.”

The Cardinals (7-1) jumped on some of the Kansas City (1-6) nerves in the opening minutes, taking a 21-7 lead by the 12:17 media. The ‘Roos got down by as many as 23 at the 4:34 mark, on a put back by UL’s Montrezl Harrell, but Kansas City settled down a bit from there, and closed the period on a 9-2 run to make it 43-27 at the half.

The ‘Roos actually shot a better percentage from the field than the Cardinals (45.8 to 38.5 percent), but a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points was the difference thanks to 12 offensive boards. Nelson Kirksey led the ‘Roos with eight points at the half, while Luke Hancock paced Louisville with 10.

The second stanza saw the Cardinals quickly push their lead back to 20, but UMKC kept it in that range until the 11 minute mark when UL made another push to get it up to 25 points. The biggest lead of the night was 31 with 5:25 to play. It was much improved from a year ago, when the Cardinals came away with a 99-47 victory.

The ‘Roos were out-scored by only 12 in the second half, but the glass was again dominated by the Cardinals. In the end it was a 49-29 edge on the glass, and a 22-2 edge in second-chance points. The UL press also forced 20 UMKC turnovers that turned into 29 points.

Louisville was led by five players in double figures, including 14 from Harrell and a double-double of 11 and 11 from Chane Behanan.

The ‘Roos were paced in scoring by Martez Harrison and Kirksey with 14 points each. Kirksey also pulled down seven boards, while the ‘Roos got nine rebounds from Trinity Hall. Kansas City shot 46 percent from the floor, while holding Louisville to 42.9 percent.

(Kansas City, Mo.) – Kansas City men’s basketball got 86 of its points from the starting lineup on Saturday in an 88-80 upset of Youngstown State, who came in ranked No. 21 in the Mid Major Top 25. Senior forward Nelson Kirksey had a career-high 24 points in the game, leading all five starters in double figures.

“That’s what we need from our starters. Those five guys are going to be the bulk of our scoring this season.” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “They are a very good team and their guard play is tremendous. (Kendrick) Perry can play anywhere in the country, he is a talent.”

The ‘Roos (2-6) jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the opening eight minutes, scoring 14 of those points in the paint. The Penguins (7-4) had an answer though, scoring 11 consecutive points to take a four-point advantage, paced by seven from Kendrick Perry. He would finish the game with 33 points for YSU.

It was back and forth for the next six minutes, but Kansas City closed the final 1:17 of the period on a 7-0 run to take a 42-34 lead into the half. It was the biggest lead of the game for the ‘Roos, who were paced by Kirksey in the period with 15 points, while Frank Williams tallied 12. UMKC shot 61.5 percent, while YSU hit 55.6 percent in the period. The difference came from the free throw line as the ‘Roos went 8-of-12 while the Penguins hit only 1-of-4.

Youngstown State never got another lead thanks to the UMKC presence on the boards. The ‘Roos out-rebounded the Penguins 28-10 over the final 25 minutes, including a 10-4 advantage in second chance points. Fred Chatmon had a team-best four offensive boards (seven overall), while Trinity Hall tallied a team-best eight boards.

“Trinity and Fred did an excellent job on the boards,” Richardson said. “We really preached that in our preparation. We thought we could hurt them on the offensive glass.”

YSU pulled to within two at the 12:49 mark, 55-53, but Kansas City went on a 14-2 rally led by Hall’s eight points to stretch that lead to 14 with 8:32 on the clock.

The Penguins could get no closer than five the rest of the way, as it was answered by a Kirksey three from the corner with 2:13 left to seal it.

The ‘Roos out-rebounded YSU 36-24 in the contest, and were led in scoring by Kirksey, while Williams finished with a career-best 18 points. Martez Harrison tallied 18 points and a career-best eight assists, while Hall had 15 points and Chatmon put up 11. The ‘Roos had 15 assists on 30 made baskets.

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC men’s basketball squad took a lead into the halftime break against Indiana State on Saturday, but an early second period run proved to be the difference in a 74-63 road win for the Sycamores at Municipal Auditorium.
