    Ultra-short bio

Wiemer Salverda is Director of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (University of

Amsterdam) and Professor of Labour Market and Inequality. He coordinates the international research

project Growing Inequalities' Impacts GINI, and managed the European Low-wage Employment

Research Network LoWER (1996-2008). He has contributed extensively in writing on comparative

wages, employment, and inequality, and served as an expert for the European Commission, the OECD

    and the ILO.

    Short bio

Dr Wiemer Salverda is a macroeconomic labour economist. He is the Director of the interdisciplinary

Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies AIAS of the University of Amsterdam and also

holds a special chair on Labour Market and Inequality at the Amsterdam Center for Inequality Studies

AMCIS in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. He coordinates the international EU-

funded research project Growing Inequalities’ Impacts GINI (2010–2013) and previously

coordinated the successful European Low-wage Employment Research Network LoWER from

inception to expiry (1995–2008; EU funded by FP4, 5 and 6 respectively). The network has published

16 books, special journal issues and reports, the latest of which – jointly with the Equalsoc network –

is the Oxford Handbook of Economic Inequality with the world’s top-ranking authors considering

many important angles. He chairs the Governing Council of the EQUALSOC Network of Excellence.

He coordinated the Demand Patterns and Employment Growth (FP5) and Benchmarking Low-wage

and High-wage Employment (EU tender) research projects. The results of the former were published

by Princeton UP (Gregory et al. 2007), including important contributions by Victor Fuchs, William

Baumol and Robert Gordon. He was an active joint coordinator of the Russell Sage Foundation’s

Low-wage Work in Europe project, led by Nobel Laureate Robert Solow, and he took part in various

EU Expert Working Groups and acted as a Rapporteur of the EU/OECD conference on Wages and

Employment (1997). He advised the OECD on wage inequality in the Netherlands (1993), the British

Low Pay Commission, and several ILO/EU Expert Working Groups, on the Minimum wage and on

Inequalities in the world of work: The effects of the crisis. He took part in the OECD’s Older

Workers project for the Netherlands and advised on Jobs for Youth and Jobs for Immigrants. Other

research interests concern wage inequality and low pay in a broad setting (including the role of

employers and institutions), wage formation including the minimum wage, pay inequalities such as

between the private and public sector, labour-market policies, education and work, the workings of

the Dutch ‘Polder model’, top incomes, income inequality and the (gendered) labour market. More
