We took time to ask difficult questions too. Bishop Marc Andrus joined us for a keynote discussion with Bishop Stacy Sauls, the current Chief Operating Officer of the Episcopal Church. We began to ask how we can move through and beyond the limiting “norms” of colonial thinking to a post-modern form of the Beloved Community, where all voices of wisdom are heard and valued. We talked about the kind of cultural humility – and vulnerability – that would be needed for us to continue to have honest conversations and make lasting changes. We also celebrated! The final Eucharist at Grace Cathedral was a feast to remember– opened by Korean drummers, and a procession of gongs from the Philippines, and followed by music from many cultures, Mass presided over by the first Asian-American woman priest, Mother Fran Toy, and homily given by our Presiding Bishop, the Most Reverend Katherine Jefferts Schori. Bishop Schori reminded us to keep building bridges to the future, and keep on working. Our procession out to the world (and the yummy banquet in Chinatown!) was led by a gorgeous Chinese Dragon. All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Rector’s Reflections ~ continued

All of this – children dressed as animals singing Anglican hymns, and intercultural clergy and laypersons coming together to eat and talk – all of it makes us who we are as Episcopalians. We are, by our very nature, intercultural, and ecumenical. We have, since the beginning of the Book of Common Prayer, begun building bridges and weaving this rich tapestry of languages, dances and prayers. May God continue to lead us from our past into a future that is built “from strength to strength”, a healthy future based on diversity and respectful of “Earth, our island home”. He gave us eyes to see them, and lips so we may tell, How great is God Almighty who has made all things well. Yours toward the Kingdom, Mother Joyce

Many thanks to Episcopal Charities staff Jory Sandusky who worked with Mother Joyce and Rosemary Young to develop our "Open Heart"ed logo! Jory interviewed Joyce to find out about the Wellness

Center, our clients and our donors, and then passed this information along to a team of designers, who produced three possible logos. Your Communications Commission, along with Mother Joyce and

Rosemary, decided that this version - with its open, golden Livermore hills, and a trinity of hopeful birds flying across the wide blue skies -- represented the message of inclusion and abundance we'd like clients to experience, and donors to support. Stay tuned for a web page with all the Big Heart news, attached to our St. Bart's website.

Meet Charisma Charisma Thomas, the Big Heart Wellness Center’s new program coordinator, brings her expertise in social work to help clients of the Interfaith Sharing Food Pantry. She has a BA in social work from Cal State East Bay, and has been a case manager at Sojourner House, the homeless shelter operated by Tri-Valley Haven, since 2007. In her work at the Haven, she has helped shelter residents obtain individual grants to improve their employability. She has also presented programs for the TVH staff about how drug and alcohol use contributes to violence, and received training to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. An Oakland native, Charisma has experienced some tough times, too – she had a troubled childhood, and in 1992, while studying cosmetology, she suffered a life-changing injury. Inspired by a relative who did medical social work, she decided to become a social worker instead of a cosmetologist. She’s the mother of two daughters, an 18 year-old who attends Delta College and wants to be an OB/GYN, and a 9-year-old in elementary school. Charisma staffs the BHWC office on Thursday mornings. Already on the BHWC calendar are a nutrition workshop on July 18, a gardening workshop on July 20, and a legal aid clinic on July 25. ~ Laning Thompson

St. Bart's is delighted to welcome Deacon Kathy Bradford. Deacon Kathy was ordained June 5, 1999, and has a background in ministries to people living with AIDS, children, and those in need of healing. She plans to continue her healing ministry here at St. Bart's. She is very interested in social justice issues, and recently took a CDSP course in community organizing. St. Bart's is a good match for her ministries because, she said, "everyone seems interested in reaching out beyond the walls to help those in need."

It takes an Ark to bring . . . Wellness!

The new Big Heart Wellness Center at St. Bartholomew’s, Livermore was begun by a three-year grant from the Episcopal Charities Action Network (ECAN). With its mission of addressing the root causes of poverty, ECAN grants funds and other support to non-profits affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of California, this time in the Southern Alameda Deanery. The Big Heart Wellness Center gathers around the Interfaith Sharing Food Pantry, housed at St. Bart’s for several years. 200 clients per week come to the Food Pantry to feed their families. Thanks to ECAN, we have gathered a network of other services to help these families improve their quality of life. First, with inspiration and work from St. Bart’s youth and Garden of Grace leader, Bruce Campbell, we planted our organic “Big Heart” garden -- just yards away from the pantry, so that fresh fruits and vegetables can be harvested for clients. Next we added more nutritional support from the Alameda County Community Food Bank, who will provide cooking and nutrition workshops, as well as information about Cal Fresh programs, in both English and Spanish. Bay Area Legal Aid became another partner, and will bring workshops and referrals about health, tenancy, and immigration legal assistance. Finally, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, Tri-Valley will provide workshops and referrals to those seeking support for mental health concerns. Our program coordinator, Charisma Thomas, will help provide referrals for clients and develop and communicate our monthly schedule of offerings. Exciting! This is another example – Noah’s Ark being one – of people working together to lift one another up in difficult times. And you are participating, just by being here! A portion of the net proceeds from performances of Noye’s Fludde will go directly to the Big Heart Wellness Center! We thank you for your support, and ask you to take some brochures and tell your neighbors about our services. You may even sign up to volunteer, or make a tax deductible contribution to BHWC. After all, we are all on the ark together! Thank you!!

Help Build the Ark! Calling all carpenters and crafters and those who want to learn! Now is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say “I helped build the Ark!”. See Dave Rettinger to volunteer. We also need donations of these items:Faux Furs (blankets, stuffed animals, purses)Felts- Assorted Colors Acrylic PaintsHot Glue guns (5 or so); Glue gun refillsCording (to use as belts) Fishing string; Bamboo PolesKites (birds) ; Feathers

Dear Deepa,

In March of this year (2013), I received a phone call from my cousin Wendy Jackson whom I had never met, due to the fact that she grew up in Florida and I am a northener and also due to the difference in our ages – she is 20 or so years younger than I am. She now lives with her husband in Carmel, CA. She became interested in finding her relatives and she happened to see a picture of me at St. Bartholomew's organ, taken by Mike Atkin and appearing on Facebook, a couple of years ago. She telephoned St. Bartholomew and asked the person who answered, for my phone number, which fortunately that person gave her. She phoned me, and we had a wonderful chat for an hour. In a few days my daughter Martha received the results of Wendy Jackson's research on gmail by Google ( I do not have a computer). So many thanks to Mike Atkin, who gets the credit for this happy reunion. Isn't this an amazing story? Love, Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters at St. Bart’s, We have been back here for five weeks, and already leaving Livermore is becoming a distant memory, which is scary! First and foremost, we miss you all. We were made acutely aware of this when we spent the day with Pierre, Maureen and Kylie a few weeks ago, and wished the rest of you could have come along too! Our trip back here was so much fun. The train took four days to cross the country and we were both amazed by the beauty and diversity of the terrain we passed through. Sleeping on the train was an adventure, especially for Mike who, as the top bunk person, had to be strapped each night into a harness not unlike that of a parachutist! We met many interesting people on the train; each meal time was spent with different dining companions and was such great fun that we were disappointed by the one meal when we ate alone! Four days in an oversized Amtrak closet was great preparation for the diminutive hotel room that was home for our three days in New York. We walked around the city for three days and got a great sense of the vibe of the city – and what an amazing city it is! There were so many wonderful sights and experiences, including choral evensong at St Paul’s, Wall Street, and a memorable evening at a Broadway show (thanks to our dear friends at St. Bart’s!) The trip on The Queen Mary was as wonderful as we dreamed it would be. There was so much to do that we were unable to take advantage of everything on offer. It was a time to relax and decompress after the stress of packing up and leaving our family and friends. A lot of time was spent gazing at the ocean and being amazed at its vastness. There was also a lot of” Ritzy” living experiences as we dressed for dinner each evening and were treated like royalty by the amazing crew. The seven days at sea passed incredibly quickly but the residual effect on our stress levels has, thankfully, continued. We are working hard to get the house here ready to sell or rent. We are both certain that we want to come back to the US, but where that will be and when is in God’s hands. While we are here we extend to all of you an open invitation, if you find yourselves on this side of the “pond”. We would love to hear from you and keep tabs on what you are all up to via the newsletter. Until we see you again, we send you our love. Carole & Mike

Soul Siblings Episode Four

Ariana Moore began an enthralling tale of three teenagers becoming friends while hiding out in a janitor’s closet. They shared their stories of hurt and rejection and now, read on ... as Uma Grandhi, the next storyteller, spins another episode in the lives of Tess, Shelby and Montelle.

“C’mon,” I grabbed Montelle’s arm, and motioned to Shelby with my hand. She looked back at me, fuming, and reluctantly followed me down the hallway. “Those jerks… how dare they…” Shelby muttered, seething with rage. Reaching her arm behind my back, she tapped Montelle on the shoulder. “Are you alright? We can ditch class if you want…” she trailed off, now focused on Montelle and not on how she wanted Mike and Jordan to get hit by a bus. Montelle looked startled. “No way, I’m fine!” He mustered a weak smile, which was so heart-breaking, I had to put my arm around his shoulder. He looked down, ashamed. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry you guys had to endure that, just because you are my friends.” “Of course not! Don’t be sorry!” Shelby immediately piped up. “Yeah, nothing’s your fault, Montelle. We’re your friends because we choose to be, and we like you for who you are.” I chimed in. “Thanks, guys,” he sighed. By this time, the crowd behind us had disappeared and dispersed into their separate groups. We continued to walk, our arms around each other’s shoulders, through the eerily quiet hallway. “Oh, look, it’s the three musketeers!” someone whispered. “More like the three misfits!” another giggled. Shelby tried to spin around, ready to throw anybody to the ground, but I stopped her. “Look, Shel, study hall is right up ahead!” I pointed, trying to calm her down. “Fine,” she grumped. We all entered the classroom and took our seats. Countless pairs of eyes stared at us. As usual, the volunteer teacher was late, so students were sitting on top of desks, turned to talk to each other. As soon as we entered the room, the chatter stopped. I made my way towards my seat in the back of the room, giving a little wave to Shelby and Montelle. On top of my desk, the same girl from before, who was wearing a pink dress and high-heeled shoes and carrying what seemed like a brand-name bag, smiled fakely at me. “Oh, is this your seat? Sorry!” she hopped off and went to join her other brand-name bag-toting, lip-gloss-wearing, smirking friends. Looking down, my eyes widened. Black Sharpie squiggles covered the whole top of my desk, where she had been sitting. Looking up, I saw Montelle and Shelby looking worriedly at me. Almost automatically, I smiled and waved my hand at them, to signal it was nothing. Apparently it was very unconvincing, because Shelby and Montelle both got out of their seats and walked towards me at top speed. What we hadn’t noticed was that the door to the classroom had opened slightly, and all of the students had taken their seats. “Was it Laura?” Shelby whispered. “Who?” I said, still in shock.

Welcome to St. Bart’s Children and Youth Ministries.

“Laura, the girl who was sitting on your desk,” Montelle pointed to Laura, who was facing forward, snickering hysterically at her oh-so funny joke. “She was also the girl who talked to you on your first day.” Just then, the door swung full open, and an elderly-looking, short, and frowning lady stepped through the door. “Oh no, it’s the Crab!” Shelby whispered. “Who?” I asked. Clearly, learning names at this school was going to be harder than I thought. “Mrs. Crabapple,” explained Montelle, “quite frankly, I couldn’t think of a better name for her. Why did she have to volunteer today?” “Miss Shelby Johnson, Mr. Montelle Harris, and Miss Tessia Parker!” she barked, searching for my name on her seating chart. Apparently, she knew my name perfectly well, With one knobbly finger, she beckoned us, an evil sneer on her face. “Detention for all three of you! You should know better than to be out of your seats when a teacher enters the room! Why are you all standing next to Miss Parker’s desk? Move aside, please!” Mrs. Crabapple scuttled over to my desk. Just great, I sighed and stepped aside along with Shelby and Montelle. She looked down and gasped, slightly taken aback. “Which one of you did this? Out with it!” she ordered, glaring at each of us in turn. After about three seconds, Shelby spoke. “I did it.” She looked Mrs. Crabapple directly in the eye and stood calmly. “It’s okay, Shelby, you don’t have to cover for me. I did it, Mrs. Crabapple.” Montelle sighed, looking defeated. Then, I realized what was happening. People were standing up for me. My friends were standing up for me. They were taking the blame for something they didn’t do, just because of that stupid girl who thought she could make our lives miserable because we were different. She thought she could hurt us, because we weren’t like her. That’s what everyone in this school thought. They thought it was okay to make fun of us, because we couldn’t possibly be human, or have feelings, like them. In that instant, I was finished. I was done with being treated this way. I wanted respect as a person, and I wanted my friends, and all of the people like us to have that respect too. I wasn’t afraid of standing up for myself anymore. “Mrs. Crabapple, Laura did it. Honestly. Before you entered the room, she was standing by my desk, and when she moved away, this mess was here.” fighting to keep myself calm, I explained the situation. “And you expect me to believe your story, Miss Parker?” “Yes, because that’s exactly what happened. Shelby and Montelle were just trying to protect me.” Quiet snickers came from the class. “Yeah, like the Crab will actually believe her!” I heard someone whisper. “I don’t know what to think of this. See me after school, all three of you, for your detention.” she returned to her desk, and sat down. Shelby and Montelle went back to their seats, and I sat down as well. I guess we would just have to wait and see what would happen to us after school. ~ to be continued

Southern Alameda County Deanery May, 2013 Report

Grant Funding: The Deanery was looking at grant opportunities for funding Deanery projects through Episcopal Charities Action Network (ECAN). Two projects were discussed: funding Abode to provide a mobile health clinic at Sacred Space in Hayward, and funding a combined Abode/FESCO project. ECAN is interested in funding Abode/FESCO (Family Emergency Shelter Coalition) – FESCO is a non-profit organization in Hayward (serving the Tri-Cities area of Hayward, Fremont and Union City) that provides shelter, transitional housing, and support services for families and children in Alameda County. ECAN wants an overall idea of what is needed; suggested getting interviews and come back with a plan – assess the reason folks are in a shelter, determine what it would take to move up to an apartment. Urged to report back to ECAN as soon as possible, then ECAN would possibly be able to fund another Deanery project. It was suggested that Mother Joyce would be an excellent person to consult with on what ECAN might be looking for in a project seeking funding since St. Bart’s was successful in obtaining funding from ECAN for the Big Heart Wellness Center.Big Heart Wellness Center (BHWC) Mother Joyce spoke about the building of a network of services to be provided at BHWC now that the funding has been received – nutritional aide, mental health, physical health, and legal aide through Bay Area Legal Aid (BALA) - legal services will be provided by summer law interns. The Deanery was informed that the BHWC will benefit from a pageant with two shows at St. Bart’s on July 13, and at St. Clare’s on July 14. The pageant will be before a children’s opera performance “Noye’s Fludde”. ~ continued

Deanery May, 2013 Report ~ continued Corazon Three churches in the Deanery are involved with Corazon; need to determine how to involve other parishes in the Deanery. The Rev. Mark Spaulding of Holy Cross, Castro Valley has started a website, connect through Facebook; go to Facebook-groups/Southern Alameda County Deanery. A’s Game There is an A’s game Deanery outing on Friday, June 14, 2013 - this is an event the Vestry voted to support. Youth Presence at Diocesan Convention The Deanery would like two official youth representatives to represent our Deanery at

Convention. Jennifer reported that Mother Joyce spoke of Grace Wilkins (our youth deanery delegate at Convention). Mark Plemmons asked what St. Bart’s needs to do, and Mother Joyce responded with we need Grace to turn in an article, and then have Grace speak. 2015 General Convention The Southern Alameda County Deanery needs delegates for the 2015 General Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Vestry approved to nominate Jennifer Nelson as a delegate to the 2015 National Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mother Joyce reported that the remaining 2013 Deanery activity that the Vestry voted to support is Evensong; scheduled for All Saint’s weekend in the Fall. ~ Jennifer Nelson
