why

cho

ose

mal

ta? Malta is situated 100km south of Sicily and approximately 290

km north of North Africa. When you fly over Malta, two colours

dominate the landscape, the brilliant blue of the sea and sky,

and the warm honey colour of the local stone. • The island’s

fascinating history dates back

7000 years; it is a timeless

kaleidoscope of different civi-

lisations. Probably the great-

est impact in Malta’s history

was made on the arrival of the

Knights of St John in 1530.

They reigned over Malta for

over two and a half centuries.

For some 160 years, Malta

formed part of the British

Empire after the King helped

rid Malta of the French.

In 1964, Malta became inde-

pendent, a Republic in 1974,

remaining a member of the

British Commonwealth and

in 2004, the Island became

a member of the European

Union • Malta has a wonder-

ful climate. It is a sea lov-

er’s paradise. With 200km of

coastline and a warm clear

blue sea you can swim, dive

and sail virtually all the year

round • For those with an in-

terest in archaeology, there

are many ancient temples,

megalithic standing stones

and catacombs. The most

spectacular site is Hagar Qim

near the enchanting Blue

Grotto. The Hypogeum in

Tarxien is awesome and the

Catacombs in Rabat are well

worth a visit • If it’s nightlife

you’re after, Paceville, St Ju-

lians is the place where you

will find discos, clubs, bars,

movie theatres and some of

the island’s best restaurants.

one tuition for business executives

General English Intensive (GEI)

This course is designed to give the student

a solid, structured foundation in the English

Language. It is ideal for students who need to

improve their fluency in a relatively short time.

Teaching is focused on the four essential language

skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Special attention is paid to vocabulary, grammar,

conversation and pronunciation. Students are

encouraged to use the English language by means

of role-play, group discussions and a variety of real

life situations. There are regular tests to monitor

students’ progress.

The course programme is 30 sessions

of 45 minutes each per week.

General English Courses

General English Semi-Intensive (GESI)

The semi-intensive course has the same

basic core element as the GEI course.

It is designed to help the student improve

communication skills through speaking, reading

and writing. The course content features new

vocabulary, grammar and language fluency -

particularly interaction with others in an English

speaking environment.

The course programme is 20 sessions

of 45 minutes each per week

General English Mini-Intensive (GEMI)

This course is designed for the student

who wants to have more free time to go on

excursions and see more of the Islands.

The core teaching element is the same as the

GEI and GESI courses but has a greater focus on

the more communicative of the language skills,

with particular emphasis being placed on the

ability to listen and speak and on the learning of

new vocabulary and the correct ways to use it in

everyday situations.

The course programme is 15 sessions

of 45 minutes each per week

The General English Intensive (GEI),

Semi-Intensive (GESI) and Mini-intensive (GEMI)

courses are available at all levels.

possible standard of English language tuition. All our courses are designed to improve the students’

command of English irrespective of their present level and language ability. Our teachers are fully

qualified and chosen for their excellent communicative skills and rapport with students. No matter what

your requirements are, we can provide language training that will help you maximise your potential.

Page 20: Full brochure

One-to-one General Tuition

Individual tuition has the advantage of giving

the student personal attention as well as the

opportunity to concentrate on specific areas

of language requirements.

The student can choose the number of sessions

required. Lessons are of 1 hour duration.

One-to-one tuition is also available for each of the

exam preparation courses.

Combination Course

A Combination Course is an ideal way of

combining a General English course with

individual tuition. For example, a programme

can be devised so that in the morning, the student

can attend a group lesson to achieve optimum

improvement in general language. Then in the

afternoon, it can be complemented by individual

tuition for specific language needs.

Whatever course you choose, our teachers

will focus on helping you to improve your

communicative skills. Our teaching methods

are skills-based; in the classroom we use a

comprehensive mix of grammar, essential

vocabulary, speaking, listening and reading.

The emphasis is on active communication.

We encourage our students to use the English

language as much as possible.

We also offer a variety of vocational study programmes

that may be taken separately or as part of a

Combination Course. Some of these short courses

can be taken on a full or part time basis

The courses include:

➜ International Tourism

➜ Customer Relations

➜ Quality Service

➜ Reception Operations

➜ Health and Safety

These courses are designed for students who need

to improve their spoken and written English for work

in the field of tourism. Tuition covers various subjects

related to the hotel industry including accommodation,

food & beverage, and provision of tours.

Each vocational subject can be studied separately for

a specific qualification.

Alternatively, the subjects can be studied together with

another vocational programme, or combined with a

suitable English language course.

Students can pursue training in a number of

vocationally related levels - all leading to International

Vocational Qualifications which are highly respected,

transferable, and recognised in most countries.

Certification is awarded on the successful completion

of the courses.

Page 21: Full brochure

Examination Preparation Courses are

designed for students interested in preparing

for an internationally recognised examination:

IELTS, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEFL,

TEFL, PITMAN and SESOL

If you want to succeed in today’s highly competitive

world, you must have internationally recognised

qualifications. This is particularly important if you

intend to apply for university or college entrance. As

English is the predominant language of business,

good English language qualifications can give you

the ‘edge’ over other candidates in the job market.

IELTS Preparation CoursesIELTS (International English Language Testing

System) is conducted jointly by The British

Council, IDP Education Australia and the

University of Cambridge Local Examinations

Syndicate.

IELTS is designed to assess the language

ability of candidates who need to

study or use English as a language of

communication. Certification is widely

accepted by educational institutions and it is

advantageous for entry to training courses,

recruitment and for immigration purposes. It

is an important qualification for any student

wishing to study for a degree course at a

university in the UK or Australia. Our IELTS

preparation course will help you develop

the essential examination skills for this

important university entrance examination.

During the course, students will have ample

scope to practice exam skills ahead of the

final examination. The combination of this

advance preparation and intense language

training will enhance the candidates’ chances

of success. Our IELTS courses are available

at Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and

Advanced levels.

Exam Preparation Courses

Cambridge Preparation Courses

The University of Cambridge Certificates are

internationally recognised examinations.

We offer examination preparation courses for the

five levels of certification:

➜ Key English Test (KET)

➜ Preliminary English Test (PET)

➜ First Certificate in English (FCE)

➜ Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

➜ Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

From the beginning of the course, students

are carefully monitored to ensure that they are

progressing to the required standard before

attempting the examination. Students receive

tuition and language practice covering every area

of the examination. As well as language training,

we ensure that our students receive regular

sessions on exam technique and take part in

timed practice tests so that they are confident and

thoroughly prepared.

KET (Key English Test) is at Level 1

in the Cambridge system.

KET recognises the ability to cope with everyday

written and spoken communications at a basic

level. It is often chosen as a first step for students

aiming to take the higher Cambridge examinations.

PET (Preliminary English Test) is at

Level 2 in the Cambridge system.

PET covers the four main language skills – reading,

writing, listening and speaking –and is the ideal

choice if you feel comfortable using your English

in everyday situations. PET is recognised by

employers as a valid indication of a student’s

language level and is recognised by some

universities as an initial qualification in English.

Page 22: Full brochure

FCE (First Certificate in English) is

at Level 3 in the Cambridge system.

FCE is widely accepted in commerce, banking, industry,

airlines and tourism. It fulfils the English language entrance

requirement for some universities and colleges.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)

is at Level 4 in the Cambridge system.

CAE indicates a high level of language

competence for candidates wishing to use English

for study or professional purposes. It fulfils the English

language entrance requirement for the majority of British

universities and higher education institutions.

Page 23: Full brochure

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

is at Level 5 in the Cambridge system.

CPE indicates a level of competence, which

fulfils the English language entrance requirement

for British universities and many universities

in other English-speaking countries. It is also

accepted by other institutions of higher education and

professional bodies throughout the world. CPE is a

very valuable certificate because in some countries,

it provides exemption from local English language

requirements. It can be accepted for admission

to courses, or for employment, where a thorough

knowledge of English is required.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

is an American examination.

The TOEFL certificate is an internationally

recognised examination. It is required by

American and Canadian universities, and by colleges

and universities in many other English speaking

countries around the world. In Europe, TOEFL is

used by institutions where English is the language of

instruction. Many government agencies, scholarship

programmes, and licensing certification agencies

use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

During the course, TOEFL language training will be

supplemented by regular tests to practice language

skills under examination conditions. Participation in

these tests helps develop student confidence and

ensure success in the examination. Our TOEFL

courses are available at Intermediate, Upper-

intermediate and Advanced levels.

TEFL

Chamber College organises TEFL courses

throughout the year for those wanting to gain

this first qualification on their way to becoming

teachers of English as a Foreign Language. The

courses are normally held over 3 or 5 weeks.

SESOL

SESOL (Spoken English for Speakers of Other

Languages) is an examination in general

English language ability by Trinity College

London. Its aim is to assess candidates’ progress

and development in spoken English and linguistic

competence.

The examination takes place in July and August.

Throughout all our certificate courses,

students are constantly assessed and

supported to help them maximise their

potential to succeed in their final examination.

Host families The learning of a language does not only

take place in a classroom, it spills out over

lesson time and continues in the streets, at the shops, in the bars and, most importantly,

at your home. For this reason nothing compares to the all-round learning experience

you can receive through staying with a host family.

Our host families are rigorously selected to make

sure that they will be a second ‘home-from-home’

for the student. They are chosen on the basis of

their openness to newcomers and their ability to

provide their guests with all the amenities and

services they are used to within their own homes.

Students take an active part in the daily lives of

the families, joining them for meals, where they

can talk with their host-parents about what went

on during their day, or enjoying a relaxing film on

TV in the evening. Families use English exclusively

around students, so students have the opportunity

to fully immerse themselves in the language and

will maybe learn a little about our traditions and

way of life at the same time, taking home with

them a wealth of knowledge unobtainable through

other forms of accommodation.

Student Residence Our student residence

is ideal for those who

would like to immerse themselves in a student-based international atmosphere but

at the same time, prefer the convenience and privacy of having their own apartment.

The residence is only 5 minutes’ walking distance from the school and consists of

a number of self catering apartments served by a reception and an informal bar. All

rooms have a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge and bathroom. There is a TV in each

apartment and linen is changed every week. The bar downstairs is ideal for mingling

with the locals as well as making new friends among the other students in the residence.

Hotels If you are looking for the

convenience of hotel

accommodation Chamber College can find you

a hotel within walking distance of the college.

Whether you are on a budget and prefer staying

in a two star hotel, or whether you are a company

executive and require the comforts of a five star

hotel, we at Chamber will help you choose the best

available option for your hotel accommodation.

Our accommodation department will support you

all the way through the booking process and will

see that your needs are met during your stay on

the Island in the most efficient way possible.

Chamber College offers

its students a wide range

At CHAMBER COLLEGE, you will find a varied

programme of activities, social and cultural events.

Our programme of extra-curricular activities gives

students the opportunity to use the English they

have learned in the classroom, to get to know the

island and its people.

For those with an appetite for adventure, we

offer a vast range of activities to suit every palate

Malta is blessed with a wonderful climate all year

round. The temperature rarely falls below 15

degrees Centigrade which means that one can

swim comfortably in our beautiful waters from

March to October • For this reason sea-based

activities are high on our agenda. Whether it is

Beach Barbeques or Windsurfing, Water-skiing or

Late-night Boat Discos, the young and the young

at heart are sure to find activities to enjoy the time

after lessons and at the weekend • For those

of you with an interest in culture, art and traditions

– don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten you! Malta is

an island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean.

Over our 7000 year history, we have seen the

coming and going of a myriad cultures; from

the Phoenicians to the Romans, Arabs to the

Normans, Knights of St. John to the Napoleonic French and finally to the British, who gave Maltese

the great legacy of the English language. With such a wealth of influences you can rest assured

that you will not easily find another country with so much to offer to culture aficionados in so small

a space • Chamber College organises trips to museums, including the Fine Arts Museum, the

fantastic Archaeological Museum and the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, which blends

the modern with the ancient in a mixture of visual and performance arts. Other places you may like

to visit are Mdina, the Silent City and the old capital of Malta, various megalithic temples including

Ggantija Temples, which at 7,000 years of age are older than the pyramids of Egypt, and Valletta,

the present capital of Malta which is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage City and which provides

students with the chance of doing a spot of shopping while soaking in the Baroque architecture of

this one-of-a-kind city • Our dedicated reception staff will keep you updated with a list of activities

available during your visit and individual excursions can be booked through them. However, you may

like to take the easier option of booking an excursion package when booking your course. These

packages are designed as two week, rolling packages to provide students with a fully organised

timetable of excursions after lessons and at

the weekends • Our Basic Package has

a general pick of excursions which include

among others: A welcome party, beach

trips, a harbour cruise, shopping trips, disco

experience, visit to Mdina and a cinema outing • The Plus package adds an extra dimension

of fun to the Basic Package. Included are all

the activities available on the Basic Package

but with added excursions, including: A trip to

our neighbouring island of Gozo, disco boat

party, go-carting, water sports day and beach

barbeque • You may wish to dedicate

yourself to a particular activity rather than

waste your time attending excursions you are

not truly interested in. With this in mind, we at

Chamber College have designed our excellent

Learn an Activity Programme. This programme

is aimed at those who want to gain knowledge

and experience in a particular field. The choice

of activity is unlimited – whatever you want to

learn about and experience, we will do our

best to organise for you • Programmes

we have held in the past include scuba

diving in our pristine, azure waters, learning

cookery with a Mediterranean and Maltese

flair, golfing at Malta’s exclusive 18-hole golf

course, cultural programmes teaching about

our great history and tradition in detail, and

plenty of other programmes with something to

entice everyone • Whatever kind of activity

our students would like to pursue, whether

water sports or barbecues, disco parties or

boat trips, or one of our learning programmes,

they can rest assured that all our excursions

are organised and supervised by our highly

experienced team of coordinators and group

leaders.

Even though Malta is small, it is an international

meeting place where people receive a big

welcome. Many students tell us that they feel

completely at ‘home’ from the moment they

arrive. The Maltese are renowned for their

friendliness and hospitality, and the country

is one of the safest holiday destinations in

Europe • Malta is a truly bilingual country.

The island was under British rule for some

160 years, so English is spoken everywhere.

It is the country’s second official language

and the language of business. You can

easily buy English language newspapers,

magazines and books and there is a choice of

English language TV and radio programmes

including BBC World, CNN and CNBC.

Valletta is a UNESCO ‘World Heritage City’. It gets its name from

Grandmaster La Vallette who established the capital in the

16th century. Today, it is a busy commercial and cultural centre overlooking the

impressive Grand Harbour. The city has a fascinating grid system of straight streets

nearly all leading to the sea. Valletta offers visitors a range of interesting cultural and

artistic venues to suit all tastes. St James Cavalier Arts Centre and the Museum of

Fine Arts are well worth a visit. The city has many excellent restaurants, cafés and

bars. Almost all bus services go to Valletta.

Sliema is the largest town and only a short distance from Chamber

College. It is one of the best places for shopping and its

open-air cafes create a wonderful relaxed ‘café society’ where students can

revise the day’s lesson while watching the world go by. The town has a 4km

sandstone beach along the coastline - perfect for sunbathing or swimming.

There is a regular ferry from Sliema seafront to Valletta that only takes 10 minutes

across the beautiful blue waters.
