Fulfilling A Mission One thing we can count on is change. No matter where we live or what we do change will find us. As the sun rises and sets day after day so does change come to us as part of the circle of life. We are changing into another month, the month we call June. The month we remember on the 21st as the summer solstice and perhaps even to remember our dreams of the midsummer. Yet there is more, there is always more. This year makes the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy. On June 6, 1944 troops landed on beaches along the coast of France to liberate Europe from the Nazis during the Second World War. If you did not personally experience this day you no doubt know, or have known people who do have a personal connection. There are many stories to be told of that day and the days that followed. Stories that reveal the struggle of humanity. I recently read part of the story about two medics from the 161st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore. In the small 11th century Church in a small village in France they set up an aid station. Their goal and objective was to treat the wounded from both sides, Allies and Axis. What I found most interesting and telling was the community has maintained this memory of those days. The Church has not replaced some of the damage done by the war, such as blood stains and floor tile damaged from bombs etc. Yet there is more. Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore chose to treat all the wounded. Within this sacred space they chose to take a stand for healing and care. No weapons were allowed in the Church, the weapons were piled up outside. They chose to take a stand for healing and hope in the midst of chaos, turmoil and war. These medics were very much a priestly pair fulfilling a mission to heal the broken. Today, here and now in the community of Solon and beyond, we too have a mission to fulfill. The summer activities are all around us, so too is the ever changing ministry and mission call of the Church. Here at the Solon United Methodist Church we are set to “Welcome, Connect, Ignite and Love.” We seek to do this as we move together to the upward and outward call to, ‘ Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of our World.’ Shalom, Ken Fulfilling A Mission pg 1 Music Ministry pg 2 Worship Schedule pg 2 Worship Videos pg 2 Church Council minutes pg 2 Aendance & Nursery Info pg 2 Opportunies & Events pg 3 Solon Senior Support pg 3 Ma 25-Transform Week pg 3 Children—Sunday School pg 4 UMC & 4-H Camps pg 4 Vacaon Bible School pg 4 Mission U pg 4 Youth—HS Graduaon pg 5 Solon Archery pg 5 Mission Trip pg 5 Summer Opportunies pg 5 C3 Craſts & SOS pg 6 Church & Society pg 6 UMW / UMM News pg 6 Prayers & Celebraons pg 7 Mission Moments pg 7 Birthdays pg 7

Fulfilling A Mission

One thing we can count on is change.

Here at the Solon United Methodist Church we are set to “Welcome, Connect, Ignite and Love.” We seek to do this as we move together to the upward and outward call to, ‘Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of our World.’

Shalom, Ken

SOLON SENIOR SUPPORT:

I am happy to announce that there are so many requests for visits/ help from our seniors that I can't keep up! So, church fami-ly...I need your help! Solon Senior Support will be meeting at the Solon Public Library on Wednesday, May 29th at 7pm. If you missed our first meeting, it was mainly a recap of how we got start-ed, just to give information. Now we are ready for ACTION! There are so many people who would just love a visit, a phone call, some help with simple tasks in the house or yard. YOU can be one of those people!

You may be surprised to hear this, but there is a NEED in our town for CONNECTION. People may have kids, grandkids nearby,

but they have busy lives with work and kids' activities. And, our older generation does not like to burden their family with chores during visits. I tell them, "The only reason Solon Senior Support exists is to help. Our MISSION is to CONNECT seniors with adult and student volunteers. We can only achieve our mission if they are willing to accept our help."

If you can't make the meeting, just call/text/email me. I can send you the information from the meeting and we can figure out how you can make a DIFFERENCE in our community! As you can proba-bly tell, I am passionate about this outreach! I can't say enough about the wonderful seniors I am blessed to now call my friends!

Our Children Are Our Future! School is nearly done, but there are many fun options

to keep active and connected during summer vacation:

Summer 4-H on Wheels at SUMC Family Life Center,

June 13, 20, and 27 9am-11am

4-H on Wheels is a “ hands-on” summer camp for 1-5th graders. This summer’s theme,

“Scientists, Slime and Snacks” includes explor-ing science experiments, mixing a “science slime”

recipe each week, making nutritious snacks, playing outdoor games & having fun!

4-H is the youth development program of John-

son County/Iowa State University Extension; all

youth are invited to participate. No previous 4-H

experience is necessary.

Cost to attend is $24. No fee for families who

receive free/reduced lunch.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Sunday school year officially ended on May 5th with a Breakfast Party! The kids en-joyed Breakfast Pizza, Donuts, Fruit and other goodies. We also celebrated our wonderful teachers, who give their time to the children each week.

As I mentioned in the April newsletter, we will be looking at options to traditional Sunday school, as the number of kids participating on Sunday mornings has dropped significantly over the years. If you have any sugges-tions or ideas (maybe something you've done at another church), please contact Kera([email protected]) or ([email protected]).

One of our projects for the summer will be continuing to or-ganize and clean up the Teacher Workroom. If you can help, please let us know! High schoolers, Silver Cord hours will be given for your help!

We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers to teach! Please prayerfully consider helping in this way.

Have a safe and blessed summer - see you in September!

A note from Gary Mechtensimer, Solon archery coach: The archery team performed well this season. Two of our seniors qualified for the world competition as individuals, our middle school team qualified for worlds as well! Two out of the last three years our archers won first place in the state!

The Solon United Methodist Church has played a large part with their continued support. (Archery Prac-tice is held Tuesdays and Thursdays in our FLC gym.) I'm very proud of our athletes. I’ll be sending a thank you card and more pictures later.

May is MH Awareness Month

Our Church and Society group is very active in promoting mental health awareness. During May they have been trying to inform the congregation of the issues faced by those with mental health issues and why SUMC is involved. Our vision is to become “stigma free”

where a mental illness has no shame or fear, similar to how we see a physical illness, and to provide adequate treatment and facilities to provide the needed care. MISSION MOMENTS

“In Mission Together” is replacing the Missions Rainbow Covenant annual reporting.

What does this mean to you and your church? “In Mission Together” is now focusing on giving, serving, and partnering.

Giving is what we have been doing by providing financial and material gifts.

Serving is to provide physical presence to assist in programs that help spread the word of God and makes disciples of Jesus Christ. We will be trying to keep track of volunteer hours and mission experiences.

Partnering is deepening the relationship. This is where we learn names, acknowledge and share your gifts, sit, listen, laugh, cry, and worship together. You understand each other’s circumstances and make real, long-term friend-ships. This is where you share your story.

So in recap, we are asking you to continue giving financially to Missions as you have been doing; if you volunteer in programs that help spread the word of God, send us your volunteer hours of that program; if you deepened a relationship send us a brief narrative of your partnering experience. Please either send any of this information to [email protected] or put in Mission box. —Tawnia Kakacek, missions chair
