T he face of serious photography is changing. For over 60 years, enthusiast photographers have relied on SLR

cameras to get high-quality images. But now there is a new breed of interchangeable-lens camera in town. Just like the single-lens reflex, the compact system camera (CSC) can be fitted with different lenses and accessories, so that it can be customised to suit any subject.

Because the CSC has been built from the ground up for digital imaging, it has some serious advantages over the descendant of the traditional SLR in terms of handling and features. It is smaller and lighter for starters, but it also brings with it many exciting new ways of producing professional-quality images.

Not surprisingly, more and more digital photographers are now discovering the CSC

advantage. Fujifilm has been at the forefront of this revolution, with a range of cameras and lenses that offer a solution for every type of photographer, from the new hobbyist right up to the working professional. So let’s look at the Fujifilm X-Series in more detail…

What exactly is a cSc?

Just like an single-lens reflex (SlR) camera, a compact system camera

(cSc), allows you to switch lenses via a bayonet mount.

cScs are also known as mirrorless cameras, because the viewfinder does not use the swinging mirror arrangement that is at the heart of an SlR.

an eye-level viewfinder is provided on models such as the fujifilm x-T1 through a miniature lcd screen, which gives a live-view video image that exactly matches that seen by the lens and the sensor.

With no need for the mirror to be raised between each exposure, the continuous shooting speed of a cSc tends to be much higher than a comparable SlR.

lenSeSa system camera stands and falls by how many options its system can actually give you – and by the number of lenses available in particular. There are already over 20 lenses from fuji, zeiss and leica that will fit the x-Series cScs – from ultra-wide zooms to fast-aperture primes.

high Speed focuSThe x-T1 doesn’t just have a revolutionary solution for manual focusing – it has an innovative autofocus system too. its intelligent hybrid af means you have contrast af for accurate low-light focusing, but a high-speed on-sensor solution for action. This baby can track the action, even at eight frames per second.

Solid conSTRucTionlooking good is one thing, but a great camera is designed to stand the test of time. The x-T1 chassis is made of a sturdy die-cast magnesium alloy, and is dust- and water-protected. There is even a water-resistant zoom lens to go with it.

Fujifilm’s compact system cameras have some great new features that help you take better photographs in a wider range of conditions than ever before

1 Tilting rear screen Although many of Fujifilm’s

CSCs and compact cameras have a viewfinder, sometimes it’s really helpful to be able to compose images on the rear screen. And when you’re shooting from very high or low angles, it’s a huge bonus if the screen can be tilted up or down to make it easier to see (right). This isn’t just useful for composition, because once the shot is set up, you can check the camera settings on-screen and make adjustments as necessary.

3 Dual-display eye-level viewfinder

Electronic viewfinders are useful because they show the scene as it will be captured. You see the impact of any exposure, white balance or colour settings that you’ve selected. It’s a significant advantage in tricky lighting conditions.

Thanks to its huge size, the X-T1’s electronic viewfinder has another trick up its sleeve: it can show a magnified section of the scene alongside the full scene, so you can focus manually with confidence and compose the image accurately.

2 Auto switching for eye-level viewfinder

There are times when it just seems more natural to shoot while looking through a viewfinder, and it’s helpful to have a sensor that can detect when the camera is held to your eye to automatically activate the finder for a seamless transition. As soon as you drop the camera back down again, the screen leaps into life.

The X-T1’s large electronic viewfinder has the clarity of an optical pentaprism, but has distinct advantages when it comes to manual focusing.

4 Geotagging The ability to geotag images as you capture them is

especially useful to landscape photographers, who want to record their shooting locations, but in-camera systems often deplete the battery quickly. However, the X-T1 cleverly uses a smartphone’s GPS via the free Fujifilm Camera Remote app to tag images.

6 Use an app for wireless control

One of the biggest benefits of having Wi-Fi connectivity is that it enables you to control your camera remotely via Fujifilm’s Camera Remote app. It’s perfect for shooting timid wildlife or taking self-portraits, because you can see the scene on your phone screen and you’ve got full control over exposure and other key settings. What’s more, you can set the focus point with a tap of your finger on the screen before tripping the shutter. It’s also a great way of getting shake-free images when light levels drop.

5 Share your shots instantly on Facebook

Having Wi-Fi connectivity in a camera is great when you’ve got an image you can’t wait to share. All you need to do is activate the Wi-Fi system with a press of a button and connect your smartphone via the Camera Remote app. From here you just select Receive (to select the images on the camera) or Browse Camera (to choose them on the phone) in the app and download the images that you want. Once the shot is on your phone, you can share it however you like, via email or on your favourite social media site. It’ll be just as if you’d taken the shot with the phone – but it’ll be much better quality.

7 Precision top-plate controls

Having dials to control shutter speed, sensitivity and exposure compensation means that you can see the exposure settings at a glance, and adjustments can be made quickly and easily. The shutter speed and sensitivity dials also both have ‘A’ for automatic settings – and there’s no need to worry about them being knocked away from this on the X-T1, because there’s a lock button.

9 Ready for all weathersThere’s nothing worse than enjoying a spot of

landscape photography but having to abandon it due to a few drops of rain. However, if you partner a weatherproof camera like the X-T1 with a Fujinon WR weatherproof lens (there’s one out already, and two more on the way), there’s no need to stop shooting. Its 80 weatherproof seals also keep your camera’s delicate interior safe if you shoot in a dusty environment or on a beach.

8 Aperture ring A lens aperture ring gives you an intuitive way of

working. Just rotate one way to open up and isolate a subject from its background, or turn it the other way to close the aperture down and increase the depth of field. Like the shutter speed dial, there’s also an ‘A’ for automatic setting. If only the aperture ring or the shutter speed dial is set to ‘A’, you’re in Shutter or Aperture Priority mode respectively, but if both dials are set to ‘A’ the camera is in Program mode. And of course you can set both to specific settings to take full manual control.

10 X-Trans sensor Most camera sensors have a Bayer pattern of red,

green, green and blue receptors (RGGB) arranged in a uniform 2x2 grid, but the X-Trans CMOS and X-Trans CMOS II sensors use a 6x6 filter array pattern. The coloured filters are arranged in a random pattern within each block of 36 photoreceptors, which breaks up the fine grid structure that can cause the interference problems known as moiré patterning.

Most manufacturers deal with moiré patterning by placing an anti-aliasing or low-pass filter over the sensor, which softens the image very slightly. However, this is unnecessary with X-Trans CMOS sensors, so the cameras are able to produce sharper images with more detail.

11 Customisation and function settings

After you’ve been using a camera for a while, you start to get to grips with its features and develop your own way of working. Now you need the ability to customise the camera so that the controls respond as you want them to; for example, using back-button focusing or a quick route to the closer focusing (macro) setting. There are six different buttons on the X-T1 that can be reconfigured to perform a particular function of your own choosing.

You can also tailor the colours to your preferences using the Film Simulation modes and saturation controls, or tweak highlight and shadow tone so that images look just as you want them to.

12 ISO range and low-light performance A native sensitivity setting of ISO 200-6,400

and expansion settings taking this to ISO 100-25,600, along with excellent noise control, offer the scope for shooting in a wide range of lighting conditions, including very low light. You can confidently set the camera to adjust the sensitivity automatically while you take care of aperture and shutter speed (although the camera can deal with those as well if you wish). Even better, you can set maximum and minimum sensitivity values along with a minimum shutter speed for the camera to use in Auto Sensitivity mode.

6WAYS TO GET MORE CREATIVE

The X-Series cameras are crammed full of little extras that will give your pictures an edge. Here are half a dozen of our favourites found on the X-T1

Make greens stand out in the street by using the X-T1’s Partial Colour Advance Filter.

Speed up the growing cycle by using the X-T1’s intervalometer function to shoot a time-lapse sequence.

3 Have some fun with filter effects

There are eight different Advanced Filters to choose from on the X-T1. Recreate a toytown tilt-shift look with the Miniature option, or get a soft-focus glow in your images without the need to get out the Vaseline. Our favourite is the Partial Colour effect, where you turn every hue in a picture, except the one you choose, to black and white for a perfect hand-coloured effect.

1 Eight frames per second with predictive focusing

At last, the X-T1 gives you a CSC that’s at home shooting action as it is portraits or landscapes. With an 8-frames-per-second motordrive setting, it won’t miss a moment – and its continuous AF system will accurately predict where your subject will move, for accurate focusing in each successive shot.

2 Time-lapse photography

The built-in intervalometer lets you to capture a slow-changing scene in a succession of shots. Whether you want to take a shot every second, or once a day, the X-T1 will keep patiently taking up to 999 shots.

Precise manual focusing is a particular need when using primes whise open to maximise bokeh.

4 Recreate the look of Velvia and Provia

Why tweak colours and contrast on the computer, when you can do it in-camera? Fujifilm’s Film Simulation option enables you to recreate the look of some of its most famous pro films, such as Velvia, Provia and Astia. There are some great black-and-white options too. Use the bracketing option for three effects each time you fire the shutter.

5 Stitch up!Capture a wide view in a

letterbox-shaped frame using the Motion Panorama mode (below). You pan the camera across the frame, and the X-T1 will stitch the images together for you automatically.

6 Precision focusing The X-T1’s Dual Mode

viewfinder option makes manual focusing a cinch. You get two views of the scene: one shows the whole shot, the other a blow-up of the centre. Using either the split-image or focus-peaking options in this enlarged Focus Assist view, you can be absolutely certain that the part of the scene you want to be in focus is indeed sharp as a tack.

XF60mm F2.4 R MacroAt its minimum working distance of 26.7cm, this lens delivers a maximum magnification of 0.5x, making it ideal for photographing small subjects and tiny details. With an effective focal length of 91mm, it’s also a good option for portraits.

XF56mm F1.2 RWith an effective focal length of 85mm on a Fujifilm CSC, this lens is perfect for flattering portraits. The wide maximum aperture means you can blur distracting backgrounds beautifully, with smooth bokeh.

SPORT and WILdLIFE

SuPER TELEPHoToDue by the end of 2015, this lens (specification to be confirmed) is designed to complement the X-T1 and X-E2’s superior autofocusing. It promises to provide an optic that will get you really close to sport and wildlife subjects.

WEaThERPROOF

XF18-135mm F3.5-4.8 R LM oiS WRThis water-resistant zoom has an effective focal length of 27-84mm and is the ideal companion to the weatherproofed X-T1. It will be joined by the XF16-55mm F2.8 R WR early in 2015.

Add a flashThere are three external flashguns specifically designed for Fujifilm compact system and compact cameras: the EF-X20, EF-20 and EF-42. The smallest has a guide number of 20m, while the most powerful has a guide number of 42m and a tiltable, rotating head for bouncing light.

get a grip Adding a vertical battery grip (Vg-XT1) to the X-T1 improves handling with the addition of a second shutter release, twin command dials, an AE-L button, an AF-L button and a Focus Assist button, so switching between horizontal and upright shots is seamless. There are also simple ergonomic grips for other X-Series models.

add a Leica lens If you’ve got a stash of Leica M

lenses, the Fujifilm M Mount adapter will allow you to

mount many of them on an X-series CSC, at the fraction

of the cost of a Leica digital camera.

Screw-in opticsMake your X100 or X100S more versatile with a 0.8x wide-angle or 1.4x telephoto adaptor, to convert the fixed focal length from the equivalent of 35mm to 28mm or 50mm.
