G! If you open the battery cover while the camera isswitched on, the camera automatically switches offto protect the data on the SmartMedia.

G! The SmartMedia will not slide fully into the slot if it isinserted facing the wrong way. Be careful not toapply undue force to the SmartMedia.

G! To protect the SmartMedia, always store it in thespecial anti-static case.

Open the battery cover and press the batterylock release button to release the lock.

G! Always switch the camera off when replacingthe battery.

When you first switch the camera on, the date iscleared. Press the MENU/OK button to set thedate and time.

Press the O (power) button to switch the

camera on and off. When you switch the cameraon, the viewfinder lamp lights (green).

Check that the camera is switched off. Plug theAC power adapter connector into the DC IN 5Vsocket on the camera and then plug the adapteritself into the main power outlet.The self-timer lamp lights red and batterycharging begins. When charging is completed,the self-timer lamp switches off.A fully discharged battery takes roughly 5 hoursto fully recharge (at an ambient temperature of+21C to +25C (+70F to +77F)).

Use the AC power adapter in situations when a lossof power will cause problems, such as during filedownloading (via the USB connection). Using theAC power adapter also allows you to take picturesand play back images without worrying aboutdepleting the batteries.

G! Use only the FUJIFILM products listed above.

Only connect or disconnect the AC power adapter whenthe camera is switched off.Connecting or disconnecting the AC power adapter whilethe camera is switched on temporarily interrupts thepower supply to the camera, so that images or moviesbeing shot at the time are not recorded. Failing to switchthe camera off first can also result in damage to theSmartMedia or malfunctions during PC connection.

G! Charging times increase at low temperatures.G! If the self-timer lamp flashes during charging, a charging

error has occurred and the battery cannot be charged. Ifthis occurs, see P.122.

G! Switching the camera on during charging interrupts thecharging.

G! You can charge the battery more quickly by using theBC-60 Battery Charger (sold separately) (P.111).

G! The shape of the plug and socket-outlet depends on thecountry of use.

G! To set the date and time later, press the BACKbutton.

G! If you do not set the date and time, this confirmationscreen will appear each time you switch the camera on.

Using the AC Power Adapter

In U mode, the lens cover opens and thelens extends. Take care not to press onthese precision components as this couldresult in a fault or a message being displayed on the LCDmonitor. Take care also not to leavefingermarks on the lens as this will degradethe picture quality.

When this function is active, the LCD monitorswitches off to conserve reduce powerconsumption if the camera is left unused forapproximately 30 seconds ( P.100).

G! If at least 1 hour have passed since the AC poweradapter was connected or the battery inserted andthe date and time set, then those settings will bemaintained for roughly 12 hours even when thecamera has no power supply (when the AC poweradapter is disconnected and the battery is removed).

Press the MENU/OK button. Pressing theMENU/OK button switches the camera toPhotography or Playback mode.

G! If you hold down a(P) or b({), the numberschange continuously.

G! When the time displayed passes 12:00:00, theAM/PM setting automatically switches.

You can check the remaining battery chargeon the LCD monitor by pressing the DISPbutton to switch the LCD monitor on.1Battery has ample charge (No indicator

displayed).2The battery is approximately half charged.3Battery charge low. Replace or recharge

the battery as it will run out shortly.4The battery is exhausted. The display will

shortly go blank and the camera will stopworking. Replace or recharge the battery.

G! The above estimates are for the photographymodes (excluding Audio Recording mode). InAudio Recording or Playback mode, the transitionfrom Z to C may take less time.

Loop the strap over your wrist, brace your elbowsfirmly against your body and hold the camera withboth hands.Be careful to ensure that the lens, microphone andflash control sensor are not obscured by your handsor the camera strap.

G! When the flash is popped up or you are using theflash to take pictures, you may see the video imagedisappear and the screen go dark as the flashcharges. The viewfinder lamp flashes orange whilethe flash is charging.

G! If you use the flash in very dusty environments orwhen it is snowing, the flash may reflect offsnowflakes or floating dust particles so that theyappear as glowing white dots on your image.

To take the picture, press the shutter buttondown fully without lifting your finger off it. Thecamera beeps and takes the picture, and thedata is then recorded.

G! If you press the shutter button down fully in onemotion, the shot is taken without the AF framechanging.

G! When you take a picture, the viewfinder lamp lightsorange (camera not ready) before switching back togreen to indicate that the camera is again ready forshooting.

G! The viewfinder lamp flashes orange while the flash ischarging. If the LCD monitor is switched on, thescreen may go dark for a moment. This is normaland does not indicate a fault.

Using the viewfinder or LCD monitor, frame yourshot so that the subject fills the entire AF (AutoFocus) frame.

G! If your subject is not in the center of the picture, useAF/AE lock to take the picture (P.28).

When you are using the viewfinder to take apicture at a distance of 0.8 m to 1.5 m (2.6 ft. to4.8 ft.), only the shaded area in the figure isphotographed.

G! To frame your shot precisely, you should take thepicture using the LCD monitor.

G! In some conditions it may be difficult to see yoursubject clearly on the LCD monitor (Such as insunny weather outdoors or when you are shootingdimly l i t scenes). In such situations, use theviewfinder to take the shot.

G! The image shown on the LCD monitor before youtake the shot may differ in its brightness, color, etc.from the image actually recorded. If necessary, playback the recorded image to check it (P.32).

ViewfinderWhen you press the shutter button down halfway, thecamera emits a short double-beep and focuses on yoursubject (the viewfinder lamp (green) changes fromblinking to steady). At that point, the AF frame on thescreen becomes smaller and the camera sets theshutter speed and aperture.G! If the camera does not emit a short double-beep and V

appears on the screen, the camera cannot focus.

G! When you press the shutter button down halfway, the imageon the screen freezes temporarily. However, this image is notthe recorded image.

G! If V is displayed on the screen (e.g. the shot is too darkfor the camera to focus), try standing about 2 m (6.6 ft.) fromyour subject to take the picture.

Use this mode to ensure that the subjects eyesappear natural when photographing people inlow-light conditions.The flash fires a pre-flash just before the pictureis taken and then fires again to take the actualpicture.

To change the flash setting, pop the flash unit up.Once the flash unit is closed, you cannot change

This is caused by the light of the flash reflecting off the inside of the eye. UseRed-Eye Reduction flash to effectively minimize the likelihood of the red-eye effect.Take the following measures also to make Red-Eye Reduction more effective:

h Get the subjects to look at the camera. h Get as close as possible to the subjects.

Pressing the flash down switches the camera toSuppressed Flash mode.Use this mode for photography using indoorlighting, for shots taken through glass, and forphotography in venues such as theaters or atindoor sporting events where the distance is toogreat for the flash to be effective. When you useSuppressed Flash, the Auto White Balancefunction (P.129) operates so that natural colorsare captured along with the ambience of theavailable light.

z Forced Flash

This is a flash mode that uses a slow shutterspeed. This allows you to take pictures of peopleat night that clearly show both your subjects andthe nighttime backdrop.

Use the Brightness setting to obtain the optimumimage brightness (exposure) when the subject ismuch brighter or darker than the background.

The white balance setting (unless it is a CustomWhite Balance setting) is ignored when you use theflash. To achieve the desired effect in your shot,press the flash back down to suppress flashoperation (P.59).


Change the white balance setting when youwant to take a picture with the white balancefixed for the surroundings and lighting when thepicture is taken.In Auto mode, the correct white balance may notbe obtained for subjects such as close-ups ofpeoples faces and shots taken under a speciallight source. In such situations, select the correctwhite balance for the light source. See P.129 forinformation on the white balance.


Flash brightness adjustment allows you tochange only the amount of light emitted by theflash to suit the photography conditions or toachieve a desired effect.

This section gives a detailed description of how to order your prints with the FinePix F601ZOOM.On the FinePix F601 ZOOM, you can specify only one print per image in the DPOF settings.

When you select the LCD BRIGHTNESS orVOLUME menu option, an adjustment barappears on the LCD monitor.

Once you enable this function, the monitor istemporarily switched off to reduce powerconsumption (Sleep mode) if the camera is not

used for about 30 seconds. If the camera is thenleft unused for a further time (2 or 5 minutes), itis automatically switched off. Use this functionwhen you want to get the maximum possiblerunning time from the battery.

When the camera is in sleep mode, pressing theshutter button down halfway brings the cameraback to full operational mode. This is a useful

feature as it allows you to take pictures morequickly than switching the camera off and thenon again.

G! Operation can also be restored by pressing buttonsother than the shutter button.

G! Auto Power Off is disabled when the camera isconnected to a USB port.

The Sleep function does not operate whenthe LCD monitor is switched off or when thecamera is in Setup or Playback mode.However, if the camera controls are notused for some time (2 minutes or 5 minutes),the camera automatically switches off.

PC Connection describes how to set up a USB connection and provides an overview of the functionsavailable using a USB connection. Refer also to the Software Quick Start Guide booklet.
