USING THE FUEL ECONOMY GUIDE

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S.Department of Energy (DOE) produce the Fuel Economy Guide tohelp car buyers choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meetstheir needs. The guide is published in print and on the Web atwww.fueleconomy.gov . Fuel Economy EstimatesEach vehicle in this guide has two fuel economy estimates.

City represents urban driving, in which a vehicle is started inthe morning (after being parked all night) and driven in stop-and-go rush hour traffic.

Highway represents a mixture of rural and interstatehighway driving in a warmed-up vehicle, typical of longertrips in free-flowing traffic.

EPA miles-per-gallon (MPG) estimates are based on lab testingand are adjusted downward (10% for the city estimate and 22%

for the highway) to better reflect real-world driving conditions foran average U.S. motorist. Vehicles are tested in the same manneto allow fair comparisons. For answers to frequently askedquestions about fuel economy estimates, visitwww.fueleconomygov.

Annual Fuel Cost Estimates

This guide provides fuel cost estimates for each vehicle. Theestimates are based on the assumptions that you travel 15,000miles per year (55% under city driving conditions and 45% underhighway conditions) and that fuel costs $2.65/gallon for regularunleaded gasoline and $2.85/gallon for premium. Cost-per-gallonassumptions for vehicles that use other fuel types are discussedat the beginning of those vehicle sections. The fuel costs weredetermined in advance to allow time for printing fuel economylabels and the Guide and may not reflect current fuel prices. Your Fuel Economy Will Vary

Your vehicles fuel economy will almost certainly varyfrom EPAs fuel economy rating. Fuel economy is not a fixednumber; it varies significantly based on where you drive, howyou drive, and other factors. Thus, it is impossible for one set ofestimates to predict fuel economy precisely for all drivers in allenvironments. For example, the following factors can lower yourvehicles fuel economy:

Aggressive driving (hard acceleration and braking)Excessive idling, accelerating, and braking in stop-and-go trafficCold weather (engines are more efficient when warmedup)Driving with a heavy load or the air conditioner runningImproperly tuned engine, dirty airfilter, under-inflated tires

In addition, small variations in vehicle manufacturing can causeMPG variations in the same make and model, and some vehiclesdont attain maximum fuel economy until they are broken in(around 3,0005,000 miles).

So, please remember that the EPA ratings are a useful tool forcomparing vehicles when car buying, but they may not accuratelypredict the MPG youwill get. This is also true for annual fuel costestimates. For more information on fuel economy ratings and

EPA is revising its methods for estimating vehicle fuel economy tobetter represent current real-world driving conditions. In addition,the fuel economy label on the window sticker is being redesignedto better convey fuel ecomony information to users. EPA plansto implement the new methods and label with 2008 models. We hope youll find the Fuel Economy Guide easy to use! Fueleconomy and annual fuel cost data are organized by vehicle class

(see page 2 for a list of classes). Within each class, vehicles arelisted alphabetically by manufacturer and model.

Vehicle models with different features, such as engine size ortransmission type, are listed as different vehiclesengine andtransmission attributes are shown in columns 2 and 3. Additionalattributes needed to distinguish among vehicles are listed in theNotes column (e.g., fuel type, suggested fuel grade). A legendfor all abbreviations is provided at the bottom of alternating pages.

A P in the Notes column indicates that the manufacturerrecommends or requires the vehicle be fueled with premium-grade gasoline. The higher price of premium gasoline is reflectedin the annual fuel cost.

The most fuel-efficient vehicles in each class and alternative fuelvehicles are indicated with special markings (see diagram below).Vehicles that can use more than one kind of fuel have an entry foreach fuel type.

Fuel economy regulations currently do not apply tovehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (vehicleweight plus carrying capacity) of more than 8,500 pounds.

Therefore, some large pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs arenot tested, and fuel economy labels are not posted on theirwindows.

Some vehicles fuel economy information is not available intime to be printed in the guide. However, you can find moreup-to-date information at www.fueleconomy.gov.

The availability of some vehicles is restricted.

TAX INCENTIV ES AND DISINCENTI VES

Tax Credits and Deductions

If you purchase a qualifying hybrid or dedicated alternativefuel vehicle (AFV) in 2006-07, you may be eligible for a federalincome tax credit of up to $3,400 for hybrids or $4,000 forAFVscompressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles are the only AFVscommercially available as of publication of the Guide. The creditamount varies from vehicle to vehicle, and the hybrid credit will begradually phased out based on manufacturer sales. Flexible fuelvehicles are not eligible for the alternative fuel credit.

Gas Guzzler Tax

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 requires auto companies to pay agas guzzler tax on the sale of cars with exceptionally low fueleconomy. Such vehicles are identified in the guide by the wordTax in the Notes column. In the dealer showroom, the wordsGas Guzzler and the tax amount are listed on the vehicles fueleconomy label. The tax does not apply to light trucks.

WHY CONSIDER FUEL ECONOMY ?

Save Money

You could save $200$1,500 in fuel costs each year by choosingthe most fuel-efficient vehicle in a particular class. This can addup to thousands over a vehicles lifetime. Fuel-efficient modelscome in all shapes and sizes, so you need not sacrifice utility orsize.

Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides anestimated annual fuel cost (see page i). The online guide atwww.fueleconomy.gov features an annual fuel cost calculatorthat allows you to insert your local gasoline prices and typicaldriving conditions (% city & highway) to achieve the most accuratefuel cost information for your vehicle.

Strengthen National Energy Security

Buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle can help strengthen ournational energy security by reducing our dependence on foreignoil. More than half of the oil used to produce the gasoline youput in your tank is imported. The United States uses about 20

million barrels of oil per day, two-thirds of which is used fortransportation. Petroleum imports cost us about $4.4 billion aweekthats money that could be used to fuel our own economy.

Protect the Environment

Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel adds greenhouse

gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2), to the Earths atmosphere.Large-scale increases in greenhouse gases in the Earthsatmosphere can lead to global climate change.

Vehicles with lower fuel economy burn more fuel, creating moreCO2. Your vehicle creates about 20 pounds of CO2 (170 cu. ft.)per gallon of gasoline it consumes. Therefore, you can reduceyour contribution to global climate change by choosing a vehiclewith higher fuel economy.

By choosing a vehicle that achieves 25 miles per gallonrather than 20, you can prevent the release of about 17 tons(260,000 cu. ft.) of greenhouse gases over the lifetime of yourvehicle.

FUELING OPTIONS

Ethanol Blends E85 & E10

Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel made by fermenting and distillingstarch crops, such as corn. It may also be made from cellulosicbiomass such as trees and grasses in the near future. The useof ethanol can reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and reducegreenhouse gases.

E10 or gasohol is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline soldin many parts of the country. All auto manufacturers approve theuse of blends of 10% ethanol or less in their gasoline vehicles.

E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, can be used inflexible fuel vehicles (FFVs), which are specially designed to runon gasoline, E85, or any mixture of the two. FFVs are offeredby several vehicle manufacturers. To determine if your vehicleis an FFV, check the inside of your car s fuel filler door for anidentification sticker or consult your owners manual. Severalhundred filling stations in the United States currently sell E85. Visithttp://afdcmap2.nrel.gov/locator/ for locations near you.

There is no noticeable difference in vehicle performance when

low-level ethanol blends are used. However, FFVs operating onE85 usually experience a 2030% drop in miles per gallon due toethanols lower energy content.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a commercially available diesel-replacement fuelmanufactured from vegetable oils or animal fats. It produces fewer

greenhouse gases than petroleum diesel and, since it is madedomestically from renewable resources, increases national energysecurity.

Biodiesel can be blended at any ratio with petroleum diesel, butit is most commonly sold at ratios of 2%, 5%, or 20%, denotedas B2, B5, and B20. Most vehicle manufacturers do not yetrecommend using biodiesel blends greater than B5, and somestate that doing so may void the engine warranty. Check yourowners manual or with your vehicle manufacturer to determinethe right blend for your vehicle.

Purchase commercial grade biodiesel from a reputable dealer.Never refuel with clean or used grease or vegetable oil that hasnot been converted to biodiesel. It will damage your engine.

Use of biodiesel blends may reduce fuel economy slightly, lessthan 1% for B5.

Premium vs. Regular Grade GasolineThe recommended gasoline for most cars is regular unleaded.Using a higher-octane gasoline than recommended by theowners manual does not improve performance or fuel efficiency;it only costs more money. Check your owners manual todetermine the lowest grade of fuel you can use.

TI PS FOR IMPROVI NG FUEL ECONOMY

Keep Your Car in Shape

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune can improve gasmileage by about 4%. Repairing a faulty oxygen sensorcan improve fuel economy by much more!

Replacing a clogged airfilter can significantly improve gasmileage.

Keeping tires inflated to the recommended pressureand using the recommended grade of motor oil canimprove fuel economy by up to 5%. The manufacturersrecommended tire pressure can be found on the tireinformation placard and/or vehicle certification labellocated on the vehicle door edge, doorpost, glove-boxdoor, or inside the trunk lid.

Plan and Combine Trips

A warmed-up engine is more fuel efficient than a cold one.Many short trips taken from a cold start can use twice asmuch fuel as one multipurpose trip covering the samedistance when the engine is warmed up and efficient.

Note: Letting your car idle to warm-up doesnt help yourfuel economy, it actually uses more fuel and createsmore pollution.

Drive More Efficiently

Aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration andbraking) can lower your gas mileage by as much as 33%at highway speeds and 5% around town.

Observe the speed limiteach 5 miles per hour (mph) youdrive over 60 mph can reduce your fuel economy by 10%.

Avoid idlingidling gets 0 miles per gallon!
