FTTH CONFERENCE & EXPO

The Gigabit Road to innovationEmpowering innovation with FTTH is the theme of this year’s FTTH Conference and all the activities of the Council for the coming year.

By Heather Burnett Gold / Fiber to the Home Council Americas

in Lafayette, La., new digital animation companies and other high-tech businesses are diversifying what was once an oil

and gas city. In the Kansas City area, young application developers are coming from all over to rent or buy homes that they will use as incubators for startup companies. In cities such as Seattle, Raleigh and Austin, residents are hailing a new era of business opportunity and advancements in quality of life with the arrival of faster networks.

What’s happening in these places is big bandwidth – really big when you compare it with what is generally available today. These newly minted gigabit communities, and others like them, are on the leading edge of what will one day be a fiber-driven gigabit empire – in which virtually unlimited bandwidth to most homes and businesses will fuel an innovation economy that will lead the world for the rest of this century and beyond.

What FTTH Council members have known for a long time is now front and center in the national conversation: Faster networks inspire innovation, jobs and growth. The spread of all-fiber networks to every corner of the Americas is really the only option for ensuring economic competitiveness – and an ever-increasing quality of life – now and for many decades to come.

Making this happen is the focus of this year’s FTTH Conference & Expo. Leaders from across the fiber-to-the-home industry – equipment vendors, network designers and builders, and the FTTH network operators who are already delivering next-generation connectivity to homes and businesses – are gathering in Tampa, Fla., to plan the all-fiber future and thereby empower a new era of innovation.

The march of fiber connectivity is underway. In North America, more than 700 FTTH networks are up and running and offering all-fiber service to more than a fifth of all households. In addition to Verizon and the hundreds of small local telecoms and municipalities that have built FTTH networks in small and medium-sized towns and cities, companies such as Google and Gigabit Squared are now moving quickly to launch gigabit services in leading American cities.

It’s all about the demand for speed. Due in no small measure to the increasing use of the Internet to stream video through such services as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, Cisco estimates that global Internet traffic has increased more than fourfold over the past five years and will increase threefold over the next five years.

And with that, consumer bandwidth demands just keep going up, up, up.

True story. Just four years ago, the Fiber to the Home Council had an initiative called the 100 Megabit Nation. Just three years ago, the FCC’s National Broadband Plan set a goal of 100 Mbps service to 100 million U.S. homes. Today, no one is talking 100 megabits. It’s all about the gigabit. And I’d bet that within five years, people will be talking about 10 gigs because the equipment to provide that is already on the market and you can be sure an army of techies will be figuring out what to do with it.

So what is the plan for getting the rest of the Americas “fibered up?”

If you’ve been following the activities of the Fiber to the Home Council Americas since last year’s annual conference in Dallas, then you know that we are moving decisively to ensure that every community that wants ultra high-speed connectivity is able to get it.

Early this year, the FTTH Council unveiled the online Community Toolkit, which has become an enormously popular resource for telecoms, ISPs and local governments and stakeholders to begin planning the gigabit networks that will ensure their future.

In May 2013, the Council hosted a “how to” conference, based on the toolkit, that drew nearly 400 representatives of bandwidth-hungry communities. Participants learned more about what FTTH can do for them and how they can get it. Just this summer, the Council took the lead in petitioning the FCC to create a “race to the top” program of grants and other incentives for deploying gigabit networks in communities across the country. And we’ve loaded the program for this annual conference with sessions and workshops aimed at communities and service providers who are looking for the knowledge and the experienced-

based information they can use to join the FTTH revolution.

New for this year is the plan to celebrate November 4 – the birthday of Professor Charles Kao, the inventor of fiber optics – as GIMME FIBER Day. On that day, the Council will highlight the consumer demand for ultra high-speed, all-fiber networks by profiling communities that have deployed them and are seeing real benefits across the board. The FTTH Council is looking for communities to profile on this special day, so please contact me ([email protected] ) if you know of one that is interested in partnering with us to show how fiber empowers innovation.

This theme – empowering innovation with FTTH – will drive all Council activities for the rest of the year and beyond.

See you along the Gigabit Road in 2014 at the regional community toolkit conferences in Austin, Lafayette, Seattle and Raleigh. v

News From Featured CompaniesAFL LAuNChES NEw POLI-MOD OPTICAL INTEr-CONNECT MODuLE Patch-and-splice module simplifies installation.

DUNCAN, SC – AFL is introducing the new Poli-MOD, a pigtailed optical interconnect patch-and-splice module that is designed for network growth. Accommodating up to 24 fiber interconnections in an industry-standard, single-slot LGX 118 footprint, the Poli-MOD module uses a snap-in splice sleeve cradle that securely manages both single and ribbon fiber arrangements. This customized cradle provides a means for an installer to secure splice sleeves prior to routing fiber within a module, reducing installation time and minimizing the risk of damaging fiber.

Available in SC, ST, FC and LC configurations, the new Poli-MOD features multidirectional cable entry access and provides the capacity to outfit a standard 4RU rack-mount panel with up to 288 fiber interconnections. The patch-and-splice module is ideal for data centers, telecommunications closets, customer premises, LAN/WAN networks, headends/central offices, hubs, cabinets and remote terminals. The Poli-MOD is also offered in an arrangement that supports the low loss budget requirements of Distributed Antenna System networks through the elimination of an interconnection point.

NExT-GENErATION hOME NETwOrkING wITh ThE ALLIED TELESIS IMG1425w: CAN YOur ONT DO ThAT?

SAN JOSE, CA – The next battleground in telecom will be inside customers’ homes and offices as bandwidth explodes and the “theory of abundance” paves the way for even more clever services and applications. Today’s smart-home, smart-building, “SmartX” solutions provide tangible savings and change the way we live, learn, work and play. As operators

ourselves, we know that if we want to be service providers tomorrow, we must be the first to implement new technologies to recruit new customers, lower churn and capture new service revenues.

Most triple-play FTTx networks fall short in supporting today’s requirements, let alone the demands of the future. Though many would claim ONTs are a trivial piece of a fiber deployment, evidence suggests otherwise. Take a look at the patchwork of devices (routers, switches, gateways, wireless access points) used beyond a demarc or ONT to access basic services. Adding three or more devices is common, and regardless of who deployed this gear, the telecom provider’s troops support this “bird’s nest” for free!

Are all ONTs created equal? We don’t think so. Stop by booth #525 and see the results of 26 years of inspired networking solutions from Allied Telesis. The new iMG1425-W is the most advanced ONT/CPE on the planet, created to solve the hyper-converged world of BYOD home networking. The Allied Telesis iMG family interoperates with all open-access, standards-based vendors. In addition, Allied Telesis solutions maximize the revenue opportunity of your network, enabling simplified plug-and-play installs while improving customer experience with new, innovative services and features.

FIELDShIELD NOw AVAILABLE FOr hArDENED CONNECTOr ENVIrONMENTThe industry’s most cost-effective environmental sealed fiber delivery solution

PLYMOUTH, MN – Clearfield Inc. is extending the reach of FieldShield optical fiber to the hardened connector marketplace. Its new solutions, FieldShield SmarTerminal and FieldShield hardened connectors, deliver the advantages of hardened connector technology in a pushable environment. Traditional hardened connector technology requires the use of flat drop cables, which are bulky, stiff and difficult to store. With the Fieldshield solutions, slack storage is integrated within the device, with additional slack storage easily accommodated. Providing up to eight ports of OSP plug-and-play connectivity, the FieldShield Multiport SmarTerminal is configured with factory-terminated FieldShield optical cable, and the feeder configuration is pushed or pulled through FieldShield Microduct to a consolidated splice point. Distribution ports are sealed with airtight, watertight caps until service turn-up is required. For deployment in a pedestal, flowerpot or vault, this above-grade or below-grade solution is the quickest, least intrusive placement method to deploy fiber, reducing restoration and troubleshooting costs because cut fiber does not have to be retrenched. When used with FieldShield microduct, the FieldShield hardened connector has been tested to meet GR-771 and GR-3120 standards for robust environmental performance.
