Standardization of FTTH Networks

•Introduction

•The intent of this work is to give an overview of existing standards and guidance documents in the area of FTTX/FITH (or relevant for FTTX/FITH) and work in progress, as well as recommendations for additional standardization work that may be needed.

•This document has been developed by an ad hoc study group within IEC SB4/ACT consisting of experts from IEC, ITU-T, CENELEC etc.

Standardization of FTTH Networks

•Recommended Terminology

To ensure clarity and consistency in communication there should be a common set of Terms, Definitions and Abbreviations. In January 2009 the FTTH Council has released a document that well defines terms used by all the FTTH Councils (North-America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific).

The study group recommends this as a referenceANNEX 2: Network Scheme + Network ElementsANNEX 3: List of Terms and Abbreviations

Standardization of FTTH Networks

Conclusions and Recommendations

Definitions:There is a lack of generally used FTTH related definitions. The Study Group recommends to use the FTTH Definition of Termsissued by the three FTTH Councils in order to improve Electropedia and all organizations to use these definitions.

Standards:For the OSP part of the network standardization is covered by existing standards and running projects. For the In-Building part of the network standards are available for the cable part of the network infrastructure.

Network Areas / components where standardization is still missing:•Access Node (POP), especially the Optical Frames•Connectivity Products in the In-Building Network:

BDB, FDB, FTB and COB and their related cable systems.
