Fighters) and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)
WHAT: For the past 54 years, The Philadelphia firefighters of the IAFF Local #22 have beenfighting more than fires; they have been helping fight against 43 neuromuscular diseases,
including muscular dystrophy and ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. In
support of the MDA, these men and women volunteer their time every summer to fill
their boots with monetary donations. Philadelphia Local #22 alone raised over $218,079
last year, placing as the 6th highest fundraising IAFF Local in country. This year, they
hope to raise $222,000. This is the second day of the Fill-the-Boot campaign. The firstwas held on May 8 and raised a total of $59,500!
WHEN: Friday, July 17,between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
WHERE: The firefighters of Local #22 will be located at more than 40 high profile intersectionsthroughout Philadelphia. Please see the following document listing a few specific
locations of the firefighters.
WHY: At the International Convention in 1953, the Local #22 as part of the IAFF officiallycommitted themselves to a partnership with MDA in the fight against neuromuscular
diseases. The IAFF has been, and continues to be the single greatest contributor to MDA,
sponsoring many fundraising events including their largest and most successful, the Fill-
the-Boot campaign. Funds raised by the Philadelphia Fill-the-Boot remain local,
supporting MDA families in the surrounding areas by providing clinic services, support
groups, research, helping with the purchase of orthopedic equipment and repairs andproviding a week-long session of summer camp for children age 6 to 17.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and
related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides
comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. The majority of
contributions to MDA come from individual donors.
