DATA SHEET RHENIUM - Code 13019

FIELD OF APPLICATION

This solution is used at ambient temperature for the application of rhenium when using the DALIC selective ‘brush’ plating process. Rhenium is a silvery metal which has good resistance to corrosion and/or to high temperatures. Its melting point is very high (3180°C). Only surpassed by carbon and tungsten. Rhenium is principally used to improve the thermal resistance of electric oven filaments, in the production of thermocouples and, as a catalyst in the chemical industry. It is weldable.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DEPOSIT

- Density: 21,03.

ELECTROLYSIS PARAMETERS

- Current density: 50 A/dm² of anode / part surface in contact. - Efficiency: 0,12 g / Ah at 50 A/dm². - Quantity of current for 1 µm on 1 dm²: 1750 mAh. - Polarity: normal. - Anode / part displacement speed: 10-20 m / min. - Deposition rate: S = 1/3 A V = 0,159 µm / min.

S = 1/6 A V = 0,079 µm / min. (*) S = Anode contact area; A = Area to be plated.

- Volume of solution: use 7 cm3 to deposit 1 µm on 1 dm² (calculated on the basis of plating 30% of the initial metal content. Dependent upon the specific application and, subject to test, it may be possible to re-use the solution for a longer period without any significant loss of coating characteristics.

APPLICATION PROCESSES

Preparatory steps before rhenium plating have not fully been established for this solution. On most base materials, the surface is generally cleaned according to the data sheet FT11020 and pre-plated with a nickel undercoat. After a water rinse, another undercoat, 0,5 µm of gold for example, may be necessary to ensure adhesion to the substrate (GOLD 100 or 50 solutions, data sheets FT13001 or FT 13002).

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOLUTION

The solution is acidic (pH = 2) and contains 100 g/L of rhenium.
