It’s sad to see that the Christmas season is already nearing its end. Normally the season lasts for three weeks, but this year it was only two weeks, simply due to the way that the calendar worked out this year. Personally, I wouldn’t mind going back to the “old days,” when the Christmas season would last un l the Feast of the Presenta on of the Lord on Feb. 2nd. A er all, since we always get 3-4 weeks of Advent to prepare for Christmas, we should also get at least that much me in the Christmas season to celebrate the birth of our Savior, don’t you think? Anyway, that’s just my two cents!

So, this year’s Christmas season will end tomorrow, January 8th, with the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord. But before we get to that day, on this weekend we first celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany. The Epiphany of the Lord refers to the fact that the news of Jesus’ glorious birth did not just stay confined to a few people in Bethlehem. Rather, because of the prophecies from God, the announcement of the angels, and the visit of the Magi, the Christ Child was made manifest to all the na ons. In other words, on Epiphany Sunday we celebrate that the Word got out! The Good News began to be spread so that more and more people would believe in Jesus. You could say, then, that one reason why the Epiphany is so important is because it is a mission-oriented feast day. It reminds us that we are all obligated by our bap sm to be ambassadors for God, to spread the Good News of His Gospel.

And speaking of bap sm: as I had said, the Christmas season concludes with the Feast of the Bap sm of Lord. Normally this feast occurs on a Sunday, not a Monday (but again, the calendar just worked out differently this year). The Bap sm of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas season precisely because it also marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. As you may know, the Gospels do not talk much about Jesus’ early earthly life. Of the four Gospel writers, only Ma hew and Luke talk about Jesus’ birth, and only Luke briefly talks about Jesus as a young boy growing up with His family in Nazareth (also known as “the hidden years”). The first me we see Jesus as an adult in Ma hew and Luke’s Gospels is at His bap sm, and the bap sm is also where we first see Jesus at all in Mark and John’s Gospels. So, in the liturgical calendar the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord marks the end of Jesus’ early years and the beginning of His public ministry as an adult. Hence, this feast closes out the Christmas season. It also marks the beginning of the season of Ordinary Time (but I’ll talk more about that season in next week’s ar cle!)

Finally, even though our first drawing for the 2018 HYPOD raffle takes places this week, that doesn’t mean that it’s too late to buy ckets. HYPOD ckets are available all year long, and every

cket is good for every weekly drawing of the year. So, even if you were to buy your cket now, you would s ll have 51 chances to win $100 or $500 during 2018. HYPOD ckets can be purchased any me at the rectory.

St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you.

Fr. Rob

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city’s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city’s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick’s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as “an exceptional work of human creative genius.” This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God’s fidelity to them, all people shall become God’s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel. Copyright © J. S. Confirmation Biography Sheet and Sponsor Selection Sheet Due

What We’re Learning 5th Grade We learned about the Sacrament of Confirmation and how it is a sign of spiritual adulthood. Through Confirmation the Holy Spirit bestows on us the graces needed to be a discerning, knowledgeable, and strong Christians. We learned that the Catholic Church is one church all over the world. The Pope, bishops, priests, and deacons make up the clergy of the Church. The Members of the Church who are not part of the clergy are called the laity. We learned that the Catholic Church has an Eastern and Western Tradition with some differences in Church layout, languages, and customs for celebrating the Mass.
