Accrington and Rossendale College enjoys a reputation as one of the best College’s in the UK. Our last government inspection put us in the top 10% of College’s in the country and awarded us the top inspection grade in every category. We are rightly proud of these achievements, but they are only a small part of the story. We constantly invest large sums of money to bring you a campus and facilities which are amongst the best in the country and ensure that you stand the best chance of success. We also attract experienced tutors with great track records in industry who can not only share their knowledge with you, but also their practical experience of working in as diverse places as board rooms and on building sites.

At accross every student is treated as an individual and support, advice and guidance is every student’s right. We know how important your course of study is to you and your future. We want you to succeed and we do all that we can to make sure that you do. That is why every student has a dedicated and experienced tutor who will take a lively interest in you and your progress.

We expect you to study hard and achieve great things with us during you time with us, but we also believe that this is a time to enjoy yourself, have new experiences and make friends which will last a lifetime. That’s why we created the purpose built “Hub”, which acts as a chill out space and comes with a plasma screen, Nintendo Wii, table tennis and gives you the opportunity to spend time with your friends.

During your time with us you will get the opportunity to take part in some great experiences. You may take part in the educational trips to the Eden Centre in Cornwall, the Lake District or overseas. You may also go on one of the many outings to museums and theatres we arrange throughout the year.

The most important thing though, is how you make the most of your opportunity of a college education. You’ll be studying at one of the most successful further education colleges in the country and our graduates have gone on to become European Cup winners, World Superbike Champions, Michelin Starred Chefs and TV, stage and cinema actors.

Ten good reasons to come to accrossLook out for more “reasons to come to accross” throughout the course pages when you see this symbol!

1 Our student success rate. The number of students that stay on their course and

successfully achieve their course of study has remained in the top 10% of all further education and tertiary colleges for the last five years.

2 We are officially outstanding! In our latest Ofsted inspection (May

2009) we were awarded grade ones (outstanding) in all areas!

3 College alumni. Our graduates read like a who’s who of sporting, business

and artistic achievement. If you saw Gary Neville lift the European Cup, read Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, enjoyed Lee Ingleby in the Harry Potter movies or were thrilled when Ilyas Khan took over Accrington Stanley then you’re familiar with our alumni and their outstanding achievements.

4 The campus. We have a state of the art, multi-million pound campus which has

been designed with students in mind.

5 We have fabulous links with industry. In some of our study areas we

GUARANTEE students job interviews.

6 Student achievements. Each year we encourage our students to take part

in competitions and the results are always spectacular. From our Painting and Decorating students who have won eight awards this year alone, to Lauren Harris who you may have seen on TV winning the BBC Beauty Therapist of the Year competition.

7 We offer outstanding enrichment activities. These include monthly

leisure and cultural trips, plus events each day at the College for learners to enjoy and complement their studies.

8 Rubbing shoulders with the greats. We regularly invite top professionals into

the College to give lectures, master classes or just work alongside our students. Our learners have met and worked alongside Michelin starred chefs, award winning movie directors, multi-millionaire businessmen, top class professional footballers and TV personalities.

9 Continuous investment. Last year we invested £1 million pounds in a state-of-

the-art 3G football pitch and we’ll be adding a pavilion and multi-purpose pitch soon. We’re also investing in a plane fuselage for Travel and Tourism students so that they feel like they are actually learning on the job. Whatever course you take, you can rest assured that we’ve invested a lot of money in the facilities, equipment and software you’ll be using.

10 Our green credentials. Accrington and

Rossendale College prides itself on being green! We have undertaken a series of initiatives designed to reduce the size of our carbon footprint and promote environmental issues to our students and staff and we are currently developing a woodland walk, that you can enjoy whilst with us.

Section 2:Which study option is best for you and what’s the next step?

Page 20: FT Prospectus 12-13_Web

As well as choosing the subject area you want to study, you will also need to make important decision about the level and type of course which will be best for you.

Our courses are available at different levels, which mean you can start at whatever stage is right for you and progress to higher education or employment. The level you study at will depend on the GCSE grades you get next August.

Entry Level…

These courses are usually studied for one year full-time, or part-time if you are coming into college with no qualifications. You will be continually assessed and given individual guidance and support when you need it. Your ‘record of achievement’ will be updated and you will have the opportunity to gain other qualifications that interest you. If you need help or specialised equipment to enable you to study, we have tutors that can help. At the end of the course we will guide you to move on to a higher level course or to a job that’s right for you.

Level 1…

Level 1 courses are usually studied for one year, to give you a strong foundation in your chosen subject

area. You will usually study a Level 1 course if you leave school with mainly F and G grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career.

Level 2…

Level 2 courses are usually studied for one year, to prepare you for advanced level study or for employment. You will usually study a Level 2 course if you leave school with mainly D and E grades, or if you choose to enter a specialised occupational area where you have no previous experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop the literacy and numeracy skills needed for your chosen career.

Level 3…

Level 3 courses are advanced programmes of study which are usually studied for two years. They will prepare you for progression to higher education courses at university or for employment at a professional level. You will usually study a Level 3 course if you leave school with mainly A* - C grades (including English and Maths) or a merit grade in a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Levels 4 and 5…

These are higher education courses, which you could progress to after successfully completing your advanced level programme. You can progress to higher level courses in many subjects at accross College, or you may choose to move to another college or university which offers specialist programmes to prepare you for your chosen career.

Your study optionsLevels explained

Support is available

at all levels to help you

succeed with your studies. This includes

personal tutorial support and

guidance.

Page 21: FT Prospectus 12-13_Web

Whatever course area you choose to study, you will need to consider what type of programme will best suit the way you prefer to learn, and your chosen career route. The following options are available to you in most course areas:

Introductory, First and National Diplomas…

These programmes are available at Level 1 (Introductory), Level 2 (First) and Level 3 (National). They are vocational qualifications, which will prepare you for further study or employment related to a specific area of work. They have an emphasis on developing practical and creative skills and are made up of a series of core and optional units. All units are assessed individually by project and assignment work. NVQ Diploma…

These programmes are available at Levels 1,2 and 3 with options to progress to Levels 4 and 5 in some areas. They are vocational qualifications, related to specific occupations, and are usually studied within a workplace or a realistic work environment. NVQ Diploma programmes focus directly on developing the practical skills and knowledge needed for a specific job role. Programmes are made up of a series of units, which are assessed as you go along and when you are ready. To achieve your NVQ Diploma you need to show that you are competent in a range of practical skills which will be observed, and production of a portfolio of evidence. NVQ Diplomas are highly valued by employers, as they are based on the skills needed for each specific industry.

Apprenticeships…

As an alternative to full-time study, an apprenticeship will give you structured training and skills development pathway to become a technician, crafts person or junior manager with scope to go on to further study or career progression in the future. You will need at least two GCSEs at Grade D or above in English and Maths for most courses. You must have the potential to achieve NVQ Level 2 and/or Level 3 and to develop associated key skills. You will be fully employed within a relevant organisation, earning a wage and depending on your chosen career area, you will study at College on a block or day release basis. AS-Levels…

An AS-Level (Advanced Subsidiary) can be a qualification in its own right, or it can be the first half of an A-Level. Traditionally an AS-Level takes one year to complete and then if it is appropriate, the student can go on to complete the second year and get a full A-Level. The second year is known as an A2 and will build on the information you acquired during the AS-Level. AS-Levels are Level 3 qualifications.

A-Levels…

A-Levels are academic programmes of study designed to give you a good understanding and knowledge of your subject and are Level 3 qualifications. Traditionally, they take two years to complete and are a tried and tested qualification which are recognised by universities and employers. Most A-Levels involved academic tests, but can also incorporate essays and course work. If you would like to discuss any of these options please call (01254) 354354.

before making a decision. If you’re a year 11 student then you should get one posted through your door, but if not call (01254) 354354 to order a free copy or visit our website.

2 Pay us a visitOnce you’ve read the prospectus, the next step is to come along to one of our open days, meet your prospective tutors and look around the facilities (see Page 25). If you can’t decide between several different

courses, then this is a great opportunity to find out exactly what you’ll be doing on a day to day basis. If you are unable to attend our open evenings, call (01254) 354354 to arrange a visit in the area that interests you most.

3 How do I apply?By now, you should have an idea of the course you’d like to take, so fill in the application form in this prospectus and send it back to us. To avoid disappointment, we strongly

recommend you send your application form in as soon as possible. We have a limited number of places on some of our programmes so these courses fill up very quickly.

4 I’ve applied, now what?Once we’ve received your application form, we will arrange for you to be interviewed with your parents or guardians. Don’t panic! This is a friendly

chat, where we get to know you and make sure that the course is right for you. Following your interview, you will be sent a letter making you a conditional offer subject to the grades you get and places available.

It is important that you sign and return this offer in order to guarantee your place. You will be kept informed of what is happening throughout your final year at

school. If you have any queries about your application, please phone the College Admissions Team on (01254) 354031.

5 When can I enrol? If you need certain GCSE grades for your course, you can enrol once you know what your results are. On

some courses, it may be possible for you to enrol before you get your results. If you have been made an unconditional offer and you have accepted it, you will be invited in to College to

fill in an enrolment form. We are open on GCSE results day and the day after to give advice and guidance. If you don’t get the grades you expected, don’t panic, we will still have a range of options for you to consider. It could be that you may just have to study a little

longer than you first expected, to get to where you want to be.

Earn while you learn with an Apprenticeship!

Page 29: FT Prospectus 12-13_Web

About Apprenticeships

Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Functional Skills qualifications and, in some cases, a Technical Certificate.

Do I need qualifications?

We look for certain skills and your GCSE achievements. We will ask you to take a Genesys test (which measures your interests and abilities to ensure you’re on the right track as you develop your career plan) and a Basic Skills Assessment. For an Advanced Apprenticeship you need an NVQ Level 2. If you successfully complete your Apprenticeship you may progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship depending on your ability.

Are there different types of Apprenticeships?

There are two different types available, an Apprenticeship and an Advanced Apprenticeship. They include the following basic elements: • An appropriate National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at either Level 2 or 3• Functional skills qualifications, for example communication, using new technology and application of number• A technical certificate such as a BTEC or City and Guilds (included in most cases)• Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation

How long does an Apprenticeship take?

There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual apprentice and the employer’s requirements.

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds. And while you’re studying, you’ll be able to get hands-on work experience.

Martin Kelly, 29Business and AdministrationApprenticeship Level 3

I wanted a course that would lead to a permanent job and I’ve learnt a lot of practical skills so far. I have used office equipment, produced spread sheets, learnt the business side of things and met lots of new people. I had the course recommended to me by a friend and would have

no hesitation in recommending it to someone else.

An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12 to 24 months.

How do Apprenticeships work?

Your employer pays your wages and gives you on-the-job training which allows you to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). You may also spend time with us here at College, but we will tailor your apprenticeship to your employer’s needs. You will gain functional skills that will be useful in the job market - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, you’ll study for a technical certificate, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.

How much do I get paid?

Most apprentices are employed by businesses and are paid a salary that reflects their skills, experience, age and ability.

Do I get holidays?

You’ll get at least one and a half days paid holiday for every month of your training. On top of that, you’ll also get bank holidays.

What qualifications do I get when I’ve finished my Apprenticeship?

You’ll get a package of qualifications when you finish your Apprenticeship - a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), a Technical Certificate such as a BTEC National Diploma or a City and Guilds Progression Award and functional Skills qualifications.

We offer apprenticeships in the following areas: Construction and Technology

• Brickwork• Carpentry and Joinery• Cleaning and Support Services• Commercial Gas• Facilities Management• Floor Covering• General Construction Operatives• Horticulture• Maintenance Operations• Motor Vehicle / Cycles• Painting and Decorating• Plastering• Plumbing Creative Industries

I moved to the College from another school and I really like the style of learning here. I’ve definitely improved a lot, I’m getting good grades and next I hope to go to University to study international business. There’s a responsibility on the students to get their research done and monitor their own workload and it’s much better than just having

things handed to you. I’d recommend this course to anybody because it’s hard to get a job at the moment and vocational qualifications can really make a difference.

Construction and Building Services

For well over a decade the College’s construction and building services department has been regarded as one of the best in the UK. We were the first construction department to be recognised by the government as a Centre of Vocational Excellence and the only one to receive three consecutive Grade 1s at Government Inspections. We have also been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Access and Achievement in Construction.

2002 saw the construction of the multi-million pound Hameldon Building with purpose built workshops for each trade area and stocked with state-of-the-art equipment.

While our multi-million pound premises and national awards are great, it’s the quality of teaching which is fundamental to our outstanding results and that’s because we make a point of finding the best tutors with years of industrial experience.

All of our tutors and assessors have many years of experience actually doing the jobs they’re training you to do, which means they know the skills you need for the work place. That combined with our outstanding facilities and track record are why we’re regarded as one of the UK’s best construction departments.
