“Accessibility to faculty and staff is what attracted me the most .”
NoravoNNe JohNsoN ’11
noravonneJoHnSonknew exactly what she was looking for when she was considering where to go to college . “Coming from a small high school, as well as town, I wanted to attend
a university in which I would be known by name and get the educa-tion that I really need . Having the opportunity to have a one-on-one relationship with professors is a plus . Without direct communication, it’s impossible to accomplish something to the best of your ability .” At FSU, Noravonne has accomplished a lot .
“FSU helped prepare me for the future because of discussions I’ve had with so many faculty and staff, the community service I’ve performed, and the opportunity the university gave me to work with the govern-ment .” Noravonne has been a Bronco Ambassador, volunteered with Admissions, the Business Office, and the Fayetteville Bicycle Man (which donates bikes to needy children), and represented the Honor’s Program to the FSU Board of Trustees to help raise university funds . While attending FSU, she was also on a full academic scholarship .
Noravonne interned as a legal administrative support assistant at the United States Army John F . Kenney Special Warfare Center and School in Fort Bragg, NC . Currently, she is pursuing a Masters of Business Administration and continues her internship with the federal government .
Noravonne networked a lot while she was at FSU . She believes that shaped her into a more involved individual . Future, she states that “I see myself working as a permanent government employee . I’m very interested in becoming a management analyst, analyzing and propos-ing ways to improve an organization’s structure, efficiency, or profits . It’s a major challenge, but I’m up for it .”

“You can’t beat the culture here . It really made me want to be a part of the university .”
travis harris ’10
traviSHarriS is a recent FSU graduate who has his vision set on graduate school and eventually owning his own accounting firm . But his passion and his future are about much more than just
numbers . “I believe in the motto ‘Lifting as I climb .’” This is the motto of the National Association of Black Accountants, which I belong to . I definitely believe in making a difference .”
Maybe that’s one reason he was selected as Mr . Fayetteville State University his junior year . While at FSU, Travis proved his commitment to community engagement with his involvement in campus leadership as well as service activities that benefited local public school students . Travis served as an active member on the Student Activities Council, the Cultural Programs Committee and for his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha—a service organization founded in 1906 and the first intercol-legiate black Greek organization in the country . “I really expanded my horizons . I wanted to experience a lot of things . They drive that into you during orientation . I wanted to make the best of my experience here and leave a part of me to the next generation of students .”
Travis, who is from Hempstead, New York, took advantage of out-standing internship opportunities as well . During a paid internship on Wall Street, he reviewed and wrote contracts, and helped organize a conference, which involved managing hospitality arrangements for 250 students . And while representing a group called the Young Professionals, Travis also spent a week in Chicago for the National Urban League’s annual meeting, which featured leaders such as Vice President Joe Biden, Magic Johnson, and Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson .
“FSU is such a friendly, close-knit university . The professors have a genuine love for seeing you excel, and Career Services worked to give me a great head start .”

f UtUreFeDeralagentBrytne Boccaccio knows FSU has one of the top rated Criminal Justice Departments in North Carolina—a
reputation that attracts more than 400 under-graduate majors to the department’s traditional and online classes . That’s just one of the many reasons she transferred to FSU after her freshman
year . “At FSU I’ve had the opportunity to meet agents from the FBI, U .S . Marshals Service, CIA and Federal
Bureau of Prisons . The chance to interact with real agents is very important to me,” says Brytne .
Brytne wanted more one-on-one time with her professors along with more opportunities to join campus clubs to hone
her natural leadership skills . FSU gave Brytne both .
“What makes FSU great is that students can get involved in clubs and organizations that prepare you for your career,” says Brytne,
Gaining valuable leadership experience started her sophomore year when Brytne was elected president of FSU’s chapter of The National
Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice . She is also a member of Alpha Psi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society . Brytne also serves as
a Bronco Ambassador for the Office of Admissions . She enjoys sharing her FSU story with prospective students .
FSU gives every student a jump start on their future says Brytne, who plans to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons after graduation . “FSU provides a great atmosphere for seniors through their job fairs . They’ve helped me with my career plans every step of the way .”
Sometimes even leaders need a helping hand . Brytne says her professors have reached out to her as mentors, for personal and professional guidance . “I wanted to be in a place where professors knew my name and are always
accessible,” she says . “And that’s FSU .”

who encourages her students to share their love of reading . Each year she takes her students to a local elementary school to read and engage with grade schoolers—the next generation of readers .
“There is a variety of literature that appeals to students and there are ways to engage every student at FSU,” says Weatherford . Students write for Glint, FSU’s literary journal, and participate in Honors and Study Abroad programs . The interdisciplinary Profes-sional Writing Certificate Program allows students to tailor their coursework . Students enroll in courses from business and technical writing to fiction and writing for online media .
