FSK School Counseling Newsletter:
Spring 2020/Distance Learning
Dear FSK Families and Community,
Life has changed tremendously for all of us in the past couple of weeks. We have all
been asked to make changes in our everyday lives that are unsettling to us—yet,
they are necessary so that we may resume our usual activities at some point.
School, whether you love it or hate it, provides structure and normalcy to our lives.
We know what to expect; we know when things will happen. We look forward to
seeing familiar faces in the classroom, in the hallways, and in the cafeteria. When
everyday life is unexpectedly interrupted, it is normal to feel uneasy.
During this time, please know that your FSK counselors are here for you! We
encourage you to reach out to us with questions and concerns. As we are
transitioning to online learning, please be reminded that this is brand new for all of
us. Please be patient with the process, with yourselves, and with your teachers.
Remember to check your school email regularly as that is primarily how teachers
and counselors will be communicating with you.
We miss seeing all of you! – Mrs. Welty, Mrs. Haines, Mrs. Headley, Mrs. Adcock,
Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Fine, and Mr. Chaapel

Transcripts
- Currently, we are only able to email unofficial transcripts.
With schools being closed and staff working remotely, we do
not have the ability to mail official transcripts. Seniors who
need a transcript should email Mrs. Haines:
- Transcripts can be emailed to you, to a scholarship
organization, to a college, etc.
- In your email request, please indicate where the transcript
should be emailed to and provide the email address.
- Considering the extenuating circumstances related to the
coronavirus, colleges and scholarship organizations are being
very flexible. Deadlines for scholarships are being extended
and these organizations are accepting unofficial transcripts
through email.
Any related questions or concerns should be directed to Mrs.
Haines.
Scholarship News
All CCPS Scholarship information can be found through
the CCPS Scholarship Home. Scholarship applications
should be mailed directly to the business or organization.
All Local Scholarships can be found on our Scholarship
Newsletter.
Scholarships that are FSK based (FSK Athletic Boosters,
FSK Alumni, etc.) should be mailed to Francis Scott Key
High School, attention to Mrs. Welty. Those applications
will be reviewed at a later date and a winner will be
chosen.
The FSK Counseling Department is in the process of
setting up a Google Classroom. We will notify you as soon
as that is ready. In the meantime, our local scholarship
newsletter for April, as well as copies of “paper only”
applications can be found on the FSK website.
Distance Learning Tips for Success
Have a dedicated workspace – this can be aware where a student is able to focus on school work with
little distraction
Designated School Hours – Have each child in the house have dedicated school hours to try and keep
some sense of a schedule or routine
Communicate directly with your teachers as much as needed. If you do not understand something, they
have asked you to ask questions!
Take breaks and engage in healthy activities throughout the day.
Try to remain on a healthy schedule. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner around the same times. Get a good
night’s rest.

***NHS Acceptance News***
Not all NHS applications were scored prior to March 13, our last day of school. Scores will be finalized and students will be
notified of their acceptance within a week of our return to school. Our Induction Ceremony date is currently scheduled for May
20 at 7:00 pm. However, this will be postponed until the fall if there are further changes to our “return to school” date. Please
email Ms. Miller at [email protected] with further questions.
Resources for Coping with COVID 19 Outbreak
The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Coping with stress will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger.
Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. How you respond to the outbreak can depend on your background, the things that make you different from other people, and the community you live in.
Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include:
Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
Changes in sleep or eating patterns Difficulty sleeping or concentrating Worsening of chronic health problems
Things you can do to support yourself
Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy. Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your
concerns and how you are feeling.
