Motivations for ANGRA
• Very interesting for the Brazilian science:
– Possibility to start an experimental neutrino physics program in Brazil taking advantage of existing antineutrino sources (Angra-I and II nuclear reactors).

Why IAEA may have interest in antineutrino detectors?
• Antineutrinos can not be shielded and are produced in very large amounts in nuclear reactors (~ 1020 antineutrinos/s)
• Antineutrinos coming from different isotopes have different energy spectrum: antineutrino measurement may reveal, in principle, fissile composition of nuclear fuel.
• Non-intrusive, Real Time, Remote reactor monitoring: thermal power & fissile material
• Search for new methods on safeguards verification

Complete nuclear reactor antineutrino spectrum andthe expected events rate in Ge and Si detectors
CCD group
Abstract— This manuscritp details the antineutrino flux pro-duced by a nuclear reactor, and theexpected events in Germa-nium and Silicon detectors. It analyzes the contribution of thefour mayor isotopes(235U 238U 239Pu241Pu),andthecontributionof the 238U neutron captureprocess. Theevents rateand recoilenergy spectrum are calculated and compared to the resultsproposed by H. T. Wongref. [1].
I. INTRODUCTION
Neutrino-nucleus neutral current interaction has never beenobserved. In this process, a neutrino of any flavor scattersoff a nucleus transfering some momentum. For low energyneutrinos(Ev < 50MeV) the nuleus cross section becomesrelatively high compared to other neutrino interactions in thatenergy range. The standard model cross section for this processis given by:

whete M, N and Z are the mass, neutron number and atomicnumber of the nucleus, respectively, Ev is the neutrino energyand E r ec is the mesurable recoil energy of the nucleus, f (q)is the nucleus form factor at momentum transfer q. This formfactor can be used in good aproximation as |f (q)| ∼ 1 (thecorrections are a few percent only). This formula is applicableat Ev <50 MeV where the momentum transfer (Q2) is smallsuch that Q2R2 < 1, where R is the nuclear size. At lowmomentum transfer, the nucleon wave function amplitudes arein phase and add coherently, so the cross section is enhancedby ∼ N 2.In spite of its large cross section, coherent elastic neutrinonucleus scattering has been difficult to observe due to the verysmall resulting nuclear recoil energies: the maximum recoilenergy is ∼ 2E 2
v/M , which is in the sub-Mev range.However, new ultra-low threshold detectors such as new Geand Silicon detectors (CCDs) have appeared in recent years.One common characteristic of very low threshold detectorsis their relatively small size compared to typical neutrinodetectors and therefore their small detection mass. This pushesthe use of higher intensity neutrino source so nuclear reactorseems to be a suitable solution for coherent neutrino-nucleuselastic scattering experiments.The total cross section for a monoenergetic neutrino source atenergy Ev is given by

II. NUCLEAR REACTOR ANTINEUTRINO FLUX
Nuclear reactors emit large numbers of antineutrinos, about0.3×1020 v̄e/seg per GW of thermal power, broadly distributedover energies up to 12 MeV with a peak at 0.5-1 MeV. Theneutrinos come out isotropicaly so the expected flux at adistance L is related to the core yeild by the factor 1/ (4πL 2).The modeling of the v̄e spectrum above 3 MeV is consistentwith measurements at the < 5% level, while the low energyportion is subjected to much bigger unscertainties [2]. AboutN v̄e ∼ 7.3 v̄e are produced per reactor fission at steady stateoperation [3]. Quantity N v̄e receives contribution from manysources, but two of them have the mayor contribution:
N v̄e =F N +U N
here F N ∼ 6.1 v̄e/fission represents summed contributionfrom beta decays of fission fragments of four fissile isotopes235U 238U 239Pu 241Pu, and U N ∼1.2 v̄e/fission comes fromneutron capture by the 238U.
A. Antineutrino flux by fissile isotopes
The v̄e’s emmited in power reactors are predominantlyproduced through β-decays of the fission products, followingthe fission of the four dominant fissile isotopes: 235U 238U

Final remarks• Most of the CONNIE detector ready at FERMILAB.
• R&D needed to reduce noise. Two possible techniques under consideration to be used in the project ( G. Cancelo):
– Digital signal processing techniques for noise reduction– New CCD architecture (Skipper CCD)
• Angra-CCD neutrino detector will first be assemble at CBPF, tested and only then reassembled in Angra.
• CBPF-Angra link (for remote data acquisition) working.
• Ge detector + associated equipment and lead shield available at CBPF for all background studies needed.
• Good opportunity to develop new detector technology and advance CCD detectors technology.
