concretePremium range of coloured concrete block paving is

Planning permission is not required if the rain water from thepaved area does not run onto the public highway or dischargedirectly into the surface water drainage system.
All paving and surfacing, whether it’s new work, replacement, orextension, is subject to legislation, so even if you’re only replacingyour existing surfacing with products from Natural Paving, the workwill have to be installed in accordance with the regulations.
Do you have to use permeable paving? - no - The surface ispermitted to drain to a permeable or porous area located withinthe grounds of the property.
The easiest and most cost effective solution is to drain all rain wateronto gardens or borders if suitable. If the existing paved areacurrently does so and there are no problems, then carry out astraight forward replacement of the old material.
If proposed area is significantly redesigned then considerdraining rain water with falls and/or line drainage to rain gardensor soakaways.
NB soakaways must be 5m from property.
Size of rain garden needs to be 10% of paved area.
There are design criteria for rain gardens but simply a depressionat back of lawn which rain water can collect and percolatethrough the soil. This can be a flower bed or gravel area if suitable.
Flags and setts from Natural Paving are of the highest qualityand will give you years of trouble-free service when laid properly. All paving should be laid to a level that is at least 150mm belowthe DPC of any adjacent buildings.
PreparationMark out the area to be paved, allowing 100-300mm workingroom at the edges. Dig down to remove any vegetation, topsoilor loose material. Where ground is poor, it’s better to dig downfurther and then build-up the levels using crushed stone. Whenworking against a wall, the brickwork may act as a level guide, but for open spaces, a taut string line should be used. Use a spiritlevel to set the line as near to ‘level’ as is possible. Next, moveone end of the string down by 15mm per metre of paving. So, ifyour paving is to be 4 metres wide, then move the string linedown by (4 x15mm) 60mm. This will give adequate fall to drainthe paving once it’s completed.
Laying FlagstonesFlagstones should always be laid on a “full bed” of sand-and-cement that supports the whole flag and not just the corners.Use 6 parts of sharp sand or all-in ballast with 1 part cement. Mixtogether and add just enough water to make a mixture thatbinds to a sticky consistency: a good guide is that there shouldbe sufficient water to allow the mix to be moulded into a ballwithout falling apart, but not so much that water would run out ofit were it to be squeezed in the hand. To improve adhesion, consideration should be given to applying a PVA and watersolution to the underside of the flags prior to bedding.
Spread a layer of bedding mix that is roughly 50mm thick. Placethe first flag onto this bed and use a rubber mallet to carefullytap it down until it is at the correct level. Place the next flagadjacent to that just laid, leaving a joint width of 10-15mm andagain, tap down to level. Repeat this process, laying one flag ata time until the whole area is covered. The joints of flagstonepaving look best when pointed with a mortar. Make a pointingmortar by mixing 4 parts washed sharp/rendering sand with 1part cement. Again, add as little water as possible to bind themortar without overwetting it.
Feed pointing mortar into empty joints from the edge of a troweland use a pointing bar to press it down firmly and to polish itwhen the joint is full. Try to keep off the new patio for the first 24-36 hours, by which time the initial set of the mortars should becomplete. After 5-7 days, the patio should be fine for full use.
LAYING TIPS: Ensure the widest surface is uppermost.Circle, Octagon and Diamond features should be laid starting with the centre and working outwards.

Laying Natural Stone Block Paving
All block paving, whether it’s a patio, a driveway or a shoppingcentre requires at least three layers: a sub-base to give it strength;a laying course of sharp sand to support the blocks; and thepaving blocks themselves. It also needs to have firm edges to holdthe paving securely in place.
The sub-base should be at least 150mm deep for driveways and100mm for patios. The laying course should be approximately40mm. Taking into account the thickness of the block excavate tothe required level ensuring you are 150mm below DPC of anyadjacent building. It’s often a good idea to hire a mini-digger or alarger excavator with an experienced operator to undertake thistask. Diggers are also useful for loading spoil and spreading thesub-base material. When excavating be careful of any servicesunder the area to be worked.
Edge restraints hold the paving firmly in place and prevent it‘spreading’. Where the paving lies against a wall, this can act asthe edge restraint, but elsewhere a restraining edge will need tobe constructed. This may be a kerb or simply a course of pavingblocks laid on concrete. Set up a taut string line and use this as aguide to both line and level while laying the edge course.
Mix concrete for the bed and haunch using 6 parts all-in ballastwith 1 part cement. Add just enough water to bind together thedry ingredients.
Place the edge course units onto a bed of concreteapproximately 100-125mm deep and tap down to level using arubber mallet. When a kerb is used, it’s a good idea to lay the kerband the edge blocks in one operation. All restraining edge coursesmust be haunched by placing concrete at the back and packingit down. Haunching should cover roughly two-thirds of the unit andbe at least 100mm wide. Remember: these edge courses aresupporting and restraining the rest of the paving so it is essentialthat they are firmly constructed.
The next task is to spread, level and compact the sub-basematerial. Free draining material such as crushed stone known as“Type 1” is recommended to form the sub-base.
The sub-base should be thoroughly compacted. Level out the sub-base material to create a finished profile which matches thatintended for the paving. It’s vital that the next layer, the layingcourse, has a regular, uniform thickness, so the sub-base needs tobe accurate to around 10mm. Check the level and add orremove material as necessary to create a reasonably accurateprofile.
The laying course is formed by ‘screeding’ a damp coarse sharpsand to the required level. Building or masonry sand is not suitableand will cause the finished paving to settle. Spread and level alayer of sharp sand roughly 50-55mm thick. Pass over the sandonce or twice with the plate compactor to partially compact. Usea length of straight timber to scrape off the top of the sand layer, reducing its level in the process and creating a smooth, evensurface, approximately 40mm thick, on which to lay the pavingblocks.
You may need various lengths of timber and a float trowel toprepare the laying course. It should be borne in mind that the finalprofile of this laying course will be the same as that of the finishedpaving, so it is worth spending time getting it right. The finishedscreed should leave the blocks 5-8mm high so they can becompacted downwards when laid. Lightly loosen the sandsurface with a fine rake to allow for an even level aftercompaction
Avoid walking on the screeded laying course, always work ‘uphill’,and choose a starting point that is a straight edge or a right-anglecorner. Place each block carefully onto the laying course, keeping the joints hand-tight. Try to place the blocks straight downonto the bed so that sand isn’t trapped in the joints. Once blockshave been laid, they can be walked upon with care, but try tokeep back from the leading edge.
Take blocks from several packs at once to ensure they are fullyrandomised and there won’t be any problems with colourbanding. Lay all the full blocks first. Blocks to “piece-in” can be cutusing a hired-in block splitter or disc cutter. Avoid very small cutsthat are less than one-third the size of a full block. Instead, cut twoblocks, each being more than half-a-block, and use these to fillthe gap.
Once cutting-in is completed, the paving is jointed by sweepingkiln-dried sand over the surface allowing it to trickle into and fill thejoints. The blocks are compacted with four to six passes with aplate compactor, changing the direction of pass as much aspossible. Consideration should be given to the use of a rubber orneoprene mat attached to the underside of the plate compactor. This will minimise damage to the surface of the blocks. Check thearea for any damaged blocks and replace them. Sweep anyexcess sand into a corner and then make another pass or two withthe plate compactor to settle the sand into the joints. The surplussand is used to top-up those joints that appear partially empty.
And that’s it; your new Natural Stone Block Paving driveway canbe used immediately. Over the first few weeks, the jointing sandmay settle further and if this happens, the joints should be topped-up with additional sand.
