    Maniac Flash Dance

    fans ready for musical

    The Christmas sea-son is in full swing atthe St. Johns TownCenter. The annuallighting of the treein the center of theshopping mall in frontof Maggianos tookplace on Nov. 16. Fam-ilies gathered aroundthe giant tree startingat 2 p.m. There werepeople on stilts anddifferent costumes,activities for chil-dren to participate in,booths, magicians,and even an area for

    the adults to relax inwhere they had doorprizes. Of course,many of the stores of-fered special sales inhonor of the event.

    Former AmericanIdol contestant andwinner of a recent sea-son of Dancing withthe Stars Kellie Pick-

    ler performed on thestage in front of thetree at 7 p.m. She per-formed several of her

    hit songs, while theaudience sang along.Local bands like theCharlie Walker Bandtook the stage too.

    After all the festivi-ties during the day,it was finally time forthe main event; thelighting of the Christ-mas tree at 8 p.m. Asthe tree lit up, so didthe faces of not onlythe children but theadults and parents inattendance as well.Christmas is a seasonof joy and family, andthe lighting of the treeat the Town Centerwas a way to bringthe entire communitytogether.

    However, KelliePickler was not theonly superstar toperform at the St.Johns Town Center

    during the month ofNovember. In honorof the grand openingof the Microsoft store,

    Macklemore & RyanLewis gave a perfor-mance on Nov. 23.According to Jackson-ville.com, the way the1,500 people got tosee the performancefor free was to go tothe grand opening ofthe Microsoft storeand be one of thefirst 1,500 people onFriday, the day beforethe concert in theDicks Sporting Goodsparking lot.

    November was avery busy month atthe St. Johns TownCenter, and Decem-ber is sure to be evenbusier due to Christ-mas shopping. Butfor two days and fortwo different reasons,shoppers got to enjoyspecial music events.

    50 Shades! heats up Artist Series

    With more than 32 million copiessold around the United States, The Fif-ty Shades of Gray trilogy has quicklybecome a best seller. On Dec. 9 at 7:30p.m., the Artist Series presents 50Shades! The Musical. This smash hitparody will be performed for only onenight at the Moran Theater. The showbegins with a Womans book clubdeciding to read 50 Shades of Grey,then leading the audience throughtheir interpretation of the novel.     Fall semester is coming toan end, which means so do fall

    sports. The Blue Wave ladies ofthe womens volleyball team areputting away their knee pads un-til next year because end of thevolleyball season has come.

    After an incredible season,the team finished the year withan impressive overall record of26-9. Their record within theirconference was 6-2. These winsand losses include competing inseveral tournaments throughoutthe year.

    The 16 member team is un-der the direction of InterimCoach Jose Rivera, who tookover coaching duties from MaryAndrew. Andrew had been an em-

    ployee at FSCJ for 24 years whenshe retired after last season.

    This year, leaving the vol-leyball team are four talentedsophomores. Caley Crawford,Ashley Lechleidner-Rodriguez,Lisa Volger, and Samantha Saffyhave left behind a legacy for thecurrent freshmen to follow. Withso many skilled players left onthe team for next year, the BlueWave is in position to have aneven better season in 2014.

    Conference games start in January for Blue Wave hoops teams

    Womens hoops hope for a repeatperformance as Mid-Florida champs.

    No, its not March Madness yet,

    but the exciting basketball season

    at FSCJ has just begun. Both the

    mens and womens teams are

    already off to a great start for their

    respected seasons.

    The womens Blue Wave basket-

    ball team is currently 6-2 overall.

    Although they have not played a

    conference game yet, the team has

    been competing against talented

    teams from all over the state ofFlorida.

    Their rst conference game is on

    Jan. 4 at Santa Fe College. The

    game begins at 2 p.m.

    Head Coach Kristy Ward lead theteam to 2 wins recently in Nicev-

    ille, Fl. On Nov. 22, they played

    Alabama Southern Community

    College and won 71-54. The next

    day on Nov. 23, they defeated

    Northwest Florida State College

    in an exciting game. The nal

    score was extremely close; 59-56.

    Their next home game is on Dec.

    3 against Tallahassee Community

    College at 6 p.m.

    On the mens side of the gym, the

    Blue Wave team is at an overall

    record of 4-4. Like the womens

    team, the men have not played a

    conference game at this point inthe season.

    South Campus hosts its rst con-

    ference game on Jan. 22 against

    Santa Fe College at 8 p.m.

    After winning 1 of their 2 games

    from Nov. 22-23, the team, under

    the direction of their head coach

    Neil Orr, the team is getting ready

    for an intense month of basketball

    in December which includes a

    tournament down in Gainesville.

    On Dec. 4, Darton State College

    comes to South Campus to play

    the Blue Wave at 7 p.m.

    Overall, both teams are doing well

    so far. Exciting games and thrilling

    nishes have been the theme for

    both the mens and the womens

    basketball teams up to this point.Check your calendar and see if

    you can make it to the next home

    game to support these talented

    athletes.
