CCC hristmas is over and I hope that you got everything on your
wish list! 2017 has flown buy. I don’t know how you feel, but to me
it seems to me that as I get older, the days just rush by. Anyway
2018 has arrived the muskie fishing season is over for most of us.
It’s now time for the various boat and sports shows to give us some
relief from not being able to wet a line. All the newest baits and
tackle will be displayed. The guides and other experts will provide
us with tips and advice as to how, when and where to catch the fish of a lifetime. The Chi-
cago Muskie Expo will run from January 5 to 7. We will have a booth there. Stop by and
say hello. You can renew your membership, get information on our upcoming Meetings,
“The Challunge on the Chain” Tournament and buy a $1 raffle ticket with a chance to win
a high-end rod and reel combo. The following weekend, Gregg Thomas and Tony Grant
will be hosting their Musky Road Rules all day seminar featuring various speakers on hot
topics. It’s a fun event and the speakers are very good. Check their website for further
details. In addition, you have the All-Canada Show, Schaumburg Fishing Show and the
Boat Show to keep you active. With the Bears and Packers out of the playoffs, this gives
all of us something to do on the weekends. We hope you will consider attending our
monthly chapter meetings held on the second Wednesday of each month. We have a great
lineup of speakers scheduled that will keep you thinking about the upcoming season. You
can learn about our various upcoming outings to plan some of your 2018 activities. Our
speaker on January 10 is Steve Herbeck a Canadian Guide out of Andy Meyers Lodge on
Eagle Lake. Steve has caught some huge fish over the years both in Canada and Wiscon-
sin. We encourage you to come by and have a beer, swap your fish stories with the guys
including the ones that got away. Bring a friend and encourage them to sign up as a mem-
ber. The cost is not prohibitive and there are a lot of benefits. On the business side, you
should have received your “Catch a Trophy” Raffle tickets. Each member received 5 tick-
ets and we ask that you sell them. It is one of the ways we have the resources to run our
meetings and publish the newsletters. If you did not receive them or would like more to
sell, contact me at [email protected]. A reminder that the banquet is scheduled
for March 24th 2018 at Chandlers. Invitations will be going out in January. We already
have $20,000 in prizes with more to come. I would like to thank Ken Miller and Mark
Lamont for their dedicated service to our Chapter over the years a Board members. Both
are rolling off the Board. Their help and counsel has been an asset to our organization.
Over the past year, we have lost several members of the FRV Family. Bruce Wisner,
Dave Schober and Ron Fredrick have all left us. They will be missed as they were special
people. I wish you all a Happy New Year filled with health and good things and more
importantly, lotsa muskies!
Happy New Year to All!

RING IN THE 2018 MUSKY SEASON WITH
STEVE HERBECK ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 10TH 2018!
Join us on Wednesday January 10th 2018 when Canadian Musky Guide Steve Herbeck will be talk-ing “Musky Fishing on Eagle Lake!” Steve was the owner of Andy Meyers Lodge on Eagle Lake along with partner Don Hunt. Herbeck has been guiding for over 29 years in Wisconsin and in Canada. He promises a "real meat and potatoes presentation, no advertisements". Some may know or remember that Steve guided anglers to 2 of the biggest fish caught in the state of Wisconsin. A 43# 6-ouncer in 1987 and a 47# 10 ounce giant in 1992. One of the best musky anglers to ever fish Eagle Lake; Steve guides for muskies on a daily basis. From the musky opener in mid-June through the close of the season, Herbeck favors a variety of structures including: reefs, flats, islands near deep water or extensive food shelves. “A multi-dimensional island or cluster of islands having weeds, rocks, and slots that’s just out from one of these areas is about as good as it gets”, Herbeck claims. Productive lures are minnow lures or “twitch baits” such as the Slammer, Crane Bait, or Jake, particularly in perch or walleye patterns, along with bucktails and top-waters. If you plan on fishing Eagle Lake in Canada in 2018, don’t miss the information packed seminar!
Don’t miss this meeting as we ring in the NEW YEAR!! Admission is $10.00/person at the door. The meeting BEGINS at 7:00PM. The Schaumburg Golf Club is located at 401 N. Roselle Road in Schaumburg, IL. All meetings are open to the public, so grab a friend and come on out to see this awesome musky presentation.
THANKS KEN MILLLER AND MARK LAMONT!!! After many years of service on the FRV BOD Ken Miller and Mark Lamont have decided to “retire” from their club positions. Ken worked with Dan Koniewicz and Tim Crews on the Members Only Contest stand-ings for both muskies and multi-species for many years. Mark was our MI Chapter News & Views author of all of the narratives you see every month in the MI magazine for Chapter 39. Mark also helped with the monthly mailing lists for the newsletter! Guys, thanks for your time and dedication. You will be missed!

IN MEMORIUMIN MEMORIUM On December 11th, 2017 the FRV club lost a wonderful man. Dr. Bruce Wisner
was a well know orthodontist in Wheaton and was responsible for creating beau-
tiful smiles for many of our young FRV anglers! He was a humble, kind man
with a great smile! He was also a great musky fisherman. He loved spending
time on the water whenever he could. He fished with several members of our
club every season in Canada. He was also a great skier. He would spend weeks
every year skiing out west! He was in great shape and many of us were surprised
to find out he was 75 when he passed away from a tragic accident at his home.
Bruce was also a former Navy veteran. His family asks for donations to be sent
in his name to the Bruce W. Wisner Memorial c/o The Wounded Warrior Project 4899 Belfort Rd. Suite 300 Jack-
sonville, FL. 32256. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Holly and the entire Wisner Family.
IN MEMORIUMIN MEMORIUM On December 13th, 2017 our good friend Ron Fredrick “Mr. Mupco” passed
away after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer. Ron was an avid musky an-
gler who also loved to multi-species fish for Bass and Panfish. He spent a lot of
time fishing his favorite waters on the Cisco Chain and knew those waters like
the back of his hand. Ron was an FRV board member and was our speaker direc-
tor for many years! He was responsible for getting really good quality speakers
for our monthly meetings and this in-turn helped raise our meeting attendance
and increase our membership. Always witty with a good joke and a quick smile,
he had a great sense of humor and was always willing to help our club in any way
he could! Ron and his family helped us with many pizza meetings at the Dundee
Park District when we used to hold the pool demos. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Carol and the entire
Fredrick family. Mr. Mupco, you will be missed! R.I.P. Ron. Hope you are up there chasing 50”ers!

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… Can you believe the New Year is here and residents of Illinois will
no-longer have the option of deducting State income taxes and
real-estate taxes in excess of $10,000.00. Oh well!! My punt, not
FRV. The December meeting (free pizza & drink) was a big suc-
cess, best attendance in years plus 4-new members joined the club.
So FRV is considering a repeat in March (free pizza night), also in
March is our annual banquet. The funds that are raised at the ban-
quet account for a large portion of the clubs annual income. So
consider attending the FRV banquet, it’s a lot of fun, we have many prizes and the food is quite
good. Don’t forget to “Bring a friend” to our meetings. It’s a great time to meet old friends and
catch up on what they’ve been doing! Its also great to network and see who’s been fishing and
what lakes are on for muskies! Take some time in 2018 and attend one of our meetings this year!
Our object is to make FRV events fun, enjoyable and instructive, in hopes of increasing meeting attendance and membership as
well. For example: Dan K has put together several nice club fishing trips for 2018. These trips are affordable, fun, plus a learn-
ing experience, “SO” look into participating in one or more of the planned fishing trips. You will have a goodtime. Hey,” we try
harder”. We appreciate those members who come regularly to meeting and other club events, we need more of you to try harder
and join in our events, you will have a good time, plus it gets you away from the couch and TV. The annual dues will be going-
up $10 for membership. MI needs the extra funds to operate. You can renew ahead of time at the old rate. Just send your check
or card information to [email protected] or Frank Lucido: 309 Ela Rd., Inverness, IL 60067.
Happy New Year!!
