Beside the seaside
This year’s winning front cover picture “By The Seaside” was drawn by Karyssa Chapman, age 10, of Somersham School. In second place was Nia Baird (8) and third was Emily Neville (10).
Your 2013 Carnival Committee — Secretary/Chairperson: Theresa Baird (tel: 07775 585713), Programme Editor: Geoff Bains (740727), Advertising Secretary: Lynne Sparrow (841313), Treasurer: Andy Robertson (840709), Stalls: John Blundell (840741) and Viv Brickett (840034), Classic Vehicles: Steve Ashton (843274), Press: Jon Carpenter (843038), Live Music: Paul Rogers (842897) plus: Debbie Hobbs, Phil Clark, Matthew Keene. Website: Andrew Martin. Programme Production: Linden Media. Print: TBPC, Kimbolton.
to Somersham Carnival 2013. The excitement is
building for a fantastic week of events with something for everyone. Our
theme this year is "Beside The Seaside" and the Procession and Fancy Dress
Contest on Carnival Day are great excuses to dress up and join the fun.
All you really need are shorts, T-shirt, flip flops and a knotted hanky on
your head. Or maybe you’ll opt for the Edwardian promenading look – all
bustles and parasols – or even come as your favourite crustacean? The most
important thing is to take part and to enjoy yourself.
In this programme, you’ll find details of all the great entertainment lined
up for you – all through Carnival week. Each event is designed to give you a
fantastic time at Carnival 2013. So, breath in that sea air, feel the sand
between your toes, and get in the seaside holiday spirit – you’ll have the
perfect opportunity on the Seaside Special Carnival coach trip (see page 19).
New this year, on Saturday June 15 we have Community Games (with a
beach theme, of course) and Big Walkies at the Nature Reserve (see page 7). A
week later, there’s a feast of music at the Seaside Rock concert – the full line
up playing at the Victory Hall is on page 29.
So, come join us during Carnival Week to celebrate living in this great
Somersham community. Have you got your whistle ready? Your flags? Your
‘kiss-me-quick’ hat? Looking forward to seeing you there.
With grateful thanks for all your continuing support,
Somersham Carnival Committee

Not only is Carnival Week a highlight
in Somersham’s calendar but the money
raised supports numerous community
groups throughout the year.
We had a super Going for Gold Carnival in
2012 and the Carnival AGM (to which all
members of the community are warmly
invited) agreed a record amount of donations
to local groups of £2500 (see the full list of
donations for 2012 on page 41).
We head into Carnival 2013 'Beside the
Seaside' in good financial health and look
forward to receiving your requests for
donations before this year's Carnival AGM
on Wednesday 18th September 2013.

First Step Playgroup is a small friendly playgroup. We aim to provide an enabling environment where each
child is treated as ‘unique’ and valued for their individuality and diversity, which is respected in all its forms.
Children can start playgroup from the age of 2 years and 6 months.
We were inspected by Ofsted in January 2011 and received ‘GOOD’
‘Staff and management have a commitment to ongoing professional development and as a result, staff are well qualified and ably support children in their learning… Independent learning is well developed and children are active confident learners,’ (Ofsted, 2011)
We are members of the Pre-school Learning Alliance. The manager has a level 5 qualification with all other staff qualified up to level 3 and are first-aid trained.
We are open from 9:00a.m to 11:30a.m; 11:30a.m to 12:30p.m Lunch club; 12:30p.m to 3:00p.m
All day sessions are available 9:00am to 3:00pm
We can be found in the Scout Hut, Parkhall Road, Somersham.
If you would like to visit us to see what we do you are welcome to call in or alternatively please contact the manager Georgina on 078550 35212 (during playgroup hours) 01487 841286 (home).
