Front Cover Analysis

I Have used a skyline in my front cover, which is a convention used in many magazines. It is placed above the title of the magazine so as to draw the audience in as it is the first thing seen. I used the offer of a free CD to draw in the reader to purchase the magazine as the get a free CD, not only a magazine. I also put a preview into the chance to win £5000 in a competition. This draws the reader in as it is a chance to get a lot of money by just purchasing the magazine, therefore encouraging a purchase. I also included a preview of the free CD which I made on Photoshop. I used an outer glow effect on the image of the CD so as to make it stand out and grab the reader’s attention.

The title of my magazine is 'Explicit' I used this title as my various Albums have an ‘Explicit Content’ warning due to adult language/references. I also thought the word explicit was quite catchy and memorable. It’s just one word with 3 syllables which makes it long enough to pay attention too but short enough to be catchy and memorable. I have used a stroke around the text and set it in front of the image so as to make it stand out and be memorable thus enforcing brand awareness and encouraging further purchases. The Title is placed Top Centre of the page so it is one of the first things the reader sees and the name of the magazine is remembered. I have made the title the largest text on the page so it stands out and catches the reader’s eye as well as being the most memorable thing on the page.I have placed my cover lines on both the left

and right of the page. I have done this so I can present as much information as possible to the reader and draw them in while keeping the page looking professional and not too cluttered. My Cover lines follow the colour scheme of the rest of the page to keep the page looking professional. Certain words are in a different colour to the rest of the cover line to catch the readers eye and draw them in as they are words specifically put there to attract readers, for example ‘Never Before’ attracts the reader because It shows they are getting something new and different, thus worth their money. ‘Barack Obama’s’ is also in another colour as It is the name of one of the most famous people in the world and therefore will draw readers in who want to know about him. On the right hand side of the page I’ve used the cover line ‘The 50 Greatest Albums of 2011’ to draw in music lovers as this is a music magazine. I have used a mix of 2 colours from my colour scheme to keep the page from looking boring while staying professional.

I have placed the date of the issue underneath the masthead (title) towards the left of the page. I have used a white font as it contrasts with the black background while fitting in with the page’s colour scheme and house colours. I have used a particularly small font so as to not distract attention for the rest of the page while still being visible to the reader.

The Main Image used is a greyscale mid-shot of one of my model’s. I used this particular model as I feel she has quite an alternative look to her. She is a mixture of both south African and British ethnicities, giving her a quite unique look. I increased the contrast of the image to define her strong features such as her jaw line and bone structure to make her stand out and create a dynamic image. A mid-shot or a long-shot is generally used on the front cover of most music magazines so as to show the artist’s personality and attract readers. The model has strong eye contact with the camera which familiarizes the reader with her and thus encourages a purchase. Her dark hair gradually blends in with the background which helps the page flow together and stops it from looking too busy. Many artists on music magazine covers look ‘sexy’ so as to attract a male audience. My model isn’t dressed provocatively but I feel her strong bone structure and eye contact makes her look beautiful to attract more of a female audience which Is the audience my magazine is mainly aimed at.

The Cover Line related to the main feature of the magazine is placed in front of the image in a larger font than the other cover lines. The name of the artist that the feature is about is in the biggest font (excluding the title of the magazine), so as to catch the reader’s eye’ and in a yellow colour following the colour scheme and contrasting with the dark background. Underneath is a brief description of what the article is about which draws the reader in with adjectives such as ‘unbelievable’ as the reader wants to find out more.

A Barcode is place on the bottom right hand corner of the magazine making it the last thing the reader sees and very small so as to not draw attention away from the rest of the page. Underneath the barcode is the magazine’s website. This advertises the website so as to get more hits and advertising prospects thus creating more revenue for the magazine.

At the bottom of the page is a small preview of the artists that will be featured in the magazine, this attracts readers as fans of these artists will want to buy the magazine to support them. The artists at the bottom of the page are the most well known artists in the magazine. Each artist is separated by a circle following the colour scheme of the page to give it a house style and continuity. This helps the page look professional

The Front page of my magazine has a colour scheme of Yellow, White and Black. Black and White are neutral colours which go with any other colour while still looking classy and professional and Yellow is quite a bright colour which brings life to the page and stops it looking boring while catching the reader’s attention.
