Unionist doubts
over SF sincerityUNIONISTS last night gave alukewarm response to a seniorrepublican’s public call or a rec-onciliation process.
Addressing an Easter com-memoration in west Belast yes-terday, Sinn Fein chairman De-
clan Kearney claimed unionistsand republicans should become“partners in reconciliation”.
However, both the DUP andUUP questioned the sincerity o the overtures.
Mr Kearney – who recently
indicated republicans shouldapologise or the IRA’s armedcampaign – also challenged the
assembled crowd at MilltownCemetery to “listen careully” tothe diverse voices rom withinthe wider unionist and Protes-tant community.
“Those voices rom that com-munity which are committed to
engagement and making com-mon purpose based upon an ac-ceptance o our shared human-
ity,” he said.“Voices which recognise the
importance o taking our peaceand political processes into a new uture. There are indeed new possibilities to be explored, withimagination, generosity, new lan-
guage, and new thinking.
