After the initial immediate repair was done, it was noticed that she was having issues with her posture and gait. At first it was not to believed to be serious. Depending on the severity, little dogs can often compen- sate and do well with luxating patellas, also known as “trick knees”. Unfortunately, after she was evaluated again by the orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that surgery was needed for BOTH knees if she was to be able to walk and have a quality of life. She was getting around, but she looked like a little spider, hunched over to try to get positioned correctly to be able move. This would have created back and joint issues in her future. Her left knee, the worst one, was repaired on 6/10/13; with the right one done on 9/4/13. She was a trouper and so forgiving of the situation (most all are). Think about it, she had spent the majority of her life since she was relinquished having to be restricted in exercise, and spending most of her time in a kennel. On 12/28/13, the little black and tan Chihuahua that was born in June 2012 was released and was ready for her loving forever home. She has had 3 out of her 4 legs repaired by the orthopedist at the MaxFund Clinic. When she was at the clinic we would call her the “Little Honey Bear,” as she has these darling round ears that give her just that look. So just in case you are wondering if your dona- tions are needed when there is not a parvo case or an emergency of some sort, remember Estrella. The “Little Honey Bear” with lots of love to give and a whole life ahead of her to run, jump, play and snuggle! Estrella was quickly adopted now begins the rest of her journey. FROM THE WORLD OF GUSYesterday and the day before that were beautiful Springdays, but today it is gray and cold and snowing. I guessthat is Colorado. That’s what they all say. I say every dayis a good day.

But in our family, no matter in what state we live in, themain thing that tells that Winter is turning to Spring iswhen we see Dad start getting the garden ready. Thisyear’s big change is a strange little house Dad has putbeside his garden beds in our back yard. The garden isnot like our garden that we had in South Carolina. There the garden was just a great big piece of dirt, agreat big plowed place surrounded by a high fence tokeep us and the deer out. This new garden is in whatDad calls “beds”, not nearly as big, and really just boxesraised up in the air to the level of my eyes if I stuck myhead straight out. The dirt that fills them comes fromdifferent colored bags. It is softer and fluffier than regular dirt and smells better too. Smells are importantto dogs. We don’t care whether the smell is sweet orsour, just that it smells interesting. I like regular dirtfor just one thing: digging. And that usually gets mein trouble.

I’ve got to tell you something, even though I don’t liketo tattle on Gypsy. Gypsy, my adopted sister, is my bestfriend; I can’t imagine life without her. She does leaveme holding the bag a lot when we both have been doing

something wrong. Gypsy must think that the gardenbeds are real beds. When she knows that nobody islooking she will jump up into the bed, wiggle on herback to make it fit just right and go to sleep, usually onher back. She acts like she’s the queen of England alonein a big bed with cool fresh sheets. It makes Dad angrybecause of what happens to the little green things all inrows, but he’s never caught her yet.

Well, like I said, this year Dad put up this funny littlehouse. Don’t get me wrong, his friends actually put thepieces together. Dad can do a lot of things, but he can’tput anything together or fix anything, that involvesusing tools. Anyway, Dad calls this house “the greenhouse.” But it’s not green! It’s just barely a housewith plastic walls and ceiling, but it is certainly notgreen! Dogs are supposed to be color blind. I don’tknow about that, but this thing has no color at all. Youwould think that a guy who paints pictures as a hobbycould tell that wouldn’t you? The little house is emptynow and the novelty is wearing off for Gypsy and me.Did I tell you that the house not only has no color, butit has almost no smell either? But what if Dad is goingto fill the house with squirrels, and maybe paint themall green? Wouldn’t that be something? Maybe he’s justwaiting until the squirrels could sleep through thenight without getting cold. You think?

Visiting Dog….

Well, my story begins as my Mom and Dad said yes to dog sitting for their daughter’s dog. Tatania is nice enough, for a dog, but she likes to bark at everything and doesn’t know when to stop. Tatania’s Mom and Dad went on acombined business and then vacation trip for a whole week. Needless to say they brought all her stuff, bed, fooddish (you would have thought she was moving in forever) and of course food and her medication. She is asenior dog and has arthritis but she seems to forget about that. The medication must be really good.

Gizmo and I have learned to live with Loki and Lexi and all their dog idiosyncrasies (how do you likethat word from a cat – see we really are special). Tatania is another story. She gets excited easily and runsup stairs and wants everyone (dogs) to go outside every time she thinks it is a good idea. Loki is all for itbut Lexi does not like to go out when it is cold, snowy or hot so she just sits and watches as they go out.Lexi uses their time outside as her time to get extra attention. Gizmo just climbs up to the top of the cattree and keeps an eye on everyone.

Finally Tatiana’s parents came to pick her up and you would have thought she was being killed. She ranaround in circles and yipped and yelped. Gizmo and I are so glad that Loki and Lexi are much less vocal. Also, just for the record, cats do not behave in such an unseemly manner. The more vocal of our typemay give a meow or two if you have been gone for an extended length of time just to say hello. Most ofus, however, will ignore you when you get home because we are put out at having been left alone for so long.

P.S. – Mom says I had better watch the senior statement as Gizmo and I are older than she is.

Dear MaxFund,

It is with great sadness that I reportthat our beloved Lab, Sampson, whowe adopted from the Max Fund 8.5years ago has passed, he was about12 years old. Sampson had a won-derful life with us and was a verydeeply loved member of the familyand will be terribly missed.

We would like to thank the MaxFund for allowing us to adoptSampson. He was never alone (I work from home) and we weretogether 24/7. He will be buriedbeneath his favorite shady Aspentrees in our yard.

We just wanted to give you folks anupdate, and how much Sampsonmeant to us, and a heartfelt thank you.

We are heartbroken at his passing.

Sincerely,Greg MoatesTom Gish

Dear Friends,

In 2012 we fostered and then adopted afine grey tabby named Kiddo, givinghim the new name of Mr. Cat. He is adear member of our family, whichnow includes another adoptee,Bounty, renamed smoky.

At Christmas time 2013, Mr. Cat founda girlfriend, a Raggedy Ann doll onour bed. He snuggled right up, sometimes putting his head in her lap.We thought the wonderful people at the shelter should know about Mr. Cat’s newrelationship, so we send you a photo.

Kiddo (Mr. Cat) and Bounty (Smoky)are happy and healthy and we are delightedthey have come to live with us.

Best to all there,Janis Falkenberg

HERE’S TEDDY....By Ilene Johnson

sk both MaxFund staff and volunteers, andthe consensus is that Teddy is an extremelyhandsome dog with a beautiful brindle coat.

He is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd/Retriever mix.

Teddy is a well-mannered boy, who is housetrained. Heloves giving and receiving affection. Teddy is easy to walk, and thoroughly enjoys going on his walks. He loves toplay with his toys, and enjoys his treat, too.

One of the volunteers who loves to walk him (and who ofcourse told me how handsome Teddy is) showed me howwell Teddy responds to his commands, including “sit” and“wait.” Teddy is a clearly a smart boy who is also trustingand very patient.

Teddy can be particular about other dogs, so if you haveanother dog, a meet and greet will be needed (as is alwaysMaxFund’s policy).

Teddy is willing to please anyone, and will respond verywell to training. He is eager to become a great CanineCitizen. He is looking for his forever home, so pleasecome and meet him. Teddy is waiting to enrich someone’slife with all of his love.

MEET BOO....By Ilene Johnson

oo is avery good-looking

five year oldChihuahua. Thislittle boy hadbeen through alot before hecame toMaxFund. Hewas a stray, run-ning on the meanstreets, and was attacked by a large dog and seriouslyinjured. Luckily, a very nice person who witnessed thevery scary event brought him right to MaxFund, wherehe received the tender loving care and treatment that heneeded. Boo is still a bit sensitive on his right shoulderdue to some scar tissue, but he feels better daily.

Boo can be a bit shy when he first meets you, but his confidence is building every day. You have to give himsome time to get to know you, and once he does, he willreward you with lots of kisses. He is an excellent lap dog, always an excellent quality!

Boo is very quiet in his kennel and loves to curl up in aball. He does love to play, and gets along well with othernice, small dogs. He also enjoys walks, and is well-behaved on a leash.

Understandably, Boo is very uncomfortable with largedogs, so cannot be in a home with large dogs. He doesnot want to live with them, or be around them. Who canblame the little guy? Boo also needs a home withoutsmall children.

Boo has proven to be quite the fashionable guy. He loveswearing comfy sweaters, so feel free to dress him up.

Boo is ready to put the past behind him, and start his newlife with a loving person or family who will keep him safeand allow his sweet personality to blossom. Please contactthe MaxFund office at 303-595-4917 for more informationabout Boo.

WHO SAVED WHOM...?By Kim Murdock

ight years ago, my husband, Reg, and I startedvolunteering at MaxFund. We quickly realizedthere was a huge need for people to interact with

the cats, and we had two dogs at home. So we decidedto get our kitty lovin from the MaxFund cats. One ofour dogs would have hurt a cat, so there was never anytemptation to bring any home. However, after watch-ing so many cats languish at the shelter and often die,we decided to foster after our dog passed away. Ourhearts were called to save the lives of as many cats aswe could and to give them a loving hospice homewhen they had little time left to live. We didn’t expectanything in return and we didn’t know the importantrole these cats would play in our journey together.

Over 6 years, we fostered 15 cats. Of those, nine diedwith us, two got adopted into their forever homes andthree were adopted by us and are still living. I won’tdetail every one of those cats but I will discuss the onesthat became an important part of our journey. Jeaniewas an elderly, skinny, matted cat who was given oneweek to live at the shelter in 2008. We brought herhome, and she became extremely attached to my husband. In fact, she lived with us for 3 ½ years beforeshe passed away. In 2008, we also got Rita. Rita hadlived at the shelter for many years. She was a shy kittyso never got attention at MaxFund and was constantlypassed over for more social cats. Rita had finally got-ten into a foster home but had gotten out of the housefor six weeks. My husband and I—along with othervolunteers—searched the neighborhood and placedflyers. Rita was eventually found and it was decidedthis was not a good home for her. My husband insistedwe keep Rita so she wouldn’t have to go back to theshelter, where she had already spent too many years. We hadn’t planned on keeping Rita, but she meldedbeautifully into our household and with our other cats.

In 2009, we decided to foster Taylor. Taylor had beenat MaxFund for many years, and you could see thelight going out of his eyes. We decided to bring himhome to find hope until he found a forever home. Healso got sick and stopped eating, which necessitated afeeding tube. For many weeks, we fed him 4x per daythrough his feeding tube and nursed him back tohealth. In 2011, Little B got so depressed and stressedat the shelter that she stopped eating. She, too, neededa feeding tube and a loving home. Because we hadsuccessfully dealt with Taylor’s feedings, we knew wewere the perfect people to nurse Little B back to health. After all, we felt like pros with feeding tubes.

In June 2011, our lives changed forever. My husbandwas diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer. Aspart of his treatment, he would need to get daily radiation to his thyroid area. This ultimately made itwhere he could not swallow or even talk. The doctorssuggested he would have to get a feeding tube in orderto be able to eat and drink. While this news may havefrightened other people, we were not frightened.Taylor and Little B had prepared us for a feeding tube.We knew how to use them and clean them. We werepros already. In fact, when the doctor told us Regwould need a feeding tube, we burst out laughing as weimagined me chasing him around with a syringe full ofvegetables! I had always thought we were such won-derful people for saving Taylor and Little B and puttingup with 4x/day feedings. But it’s the other wayaround—they prepared us!

During Reg’s treatment, I joked that Jeanie becameReg’s nursemaid. She sat on his lap constantly andshowered him with love. Toward the end of treatment,we would have to practically drag her away from himso he could sleep. On December 28, Reg had a PETscan, and we got the results back on December 30. Hisscan showed he was clean, and there was no sign ofcancer! The next day, Jeanie passed away. I often saidthat my husband got two PET scans; he got a medicalscan by a big machine, and Jeanie scanned him. Whenshe knew he was clean, she knew she could leave. Herpassing was very sad for us, as she had done so muchfor my husband. We were so grateful to her. Wethought we had selflessly saved her from dying alonein the shelter. But she became his angel.

Continued from page 8

In 2012, we got another foster cat, Boo. Reg also continued to get very close to Rita. She became his“little girl.” Unfortunately, in October 2012, the cancerreturned. By March 2013, it had spread to his spine, and he was in constant pain. In May and June, myhusband underwent six surgeries to remove the cancerand deal with resulting blood clots, and we spent a little over two weeks in the hospital. During that time,we kept Rita’s picture by his hospital bed, so he wouldhave something to make him smile. When wereturned home from the hospital the first time, heimmediately looked for Rita.

By July 2013, his cancer had returned and caused himto become paralyzed in his leg. He started chemotherapyand radiation again, and he was no longer able to walk. This meant he spent a lot of time resting. Rita and Boowere constantly sitting on him and providing him withcompany. Rita would often groom Reg’s head, especiallyon days that had been rough, such as chemo days. Shewas “his girl” and she knew it. She took her job of caringfor him very seriously. While I would run around tryingto deal with medicines, doctors, and nutrition, Rita andBoo would sit on Reg and shower him with love.

This was an extremely stressful time for us. His paralysisalone made it stressful. Underlying that, of course, wasthe fear of what the cancer was doing and the implications.Thankfully, the cats would still run around and do funnythings. They would play and make us laugh. I was sothankful to the cats during this time, as most days theywould make me smile despite my fears and stress.

In November, my husband’s journey came to an end.My husband’s mom had noticed that the cats had beenparticularly affectionate with him for a few days. Theybarely left his side. On November 19, I knew my husband was dying, because Boo was insistent that hebe able to sit on Reg. I had feared Boo—who is a largecat—was hurting Reg and when I tried to take Boo offof him, Boo became very upset and insistent. Tayloralso snuggled on Reg’s lap. As I watched this, Ithought, “Oh my god. He is dying.” Probably 20 minutes later, Reg took his last breath. I cannot thankthe cats enough for their insistence on being there.Reg had feared he would die alone. Instead, I held onehand and stroked his head, his mom held his otherhand, and Boo and Taylor sat on him sending him loving energy as he departed this world. My husbanddied surrounded by love. Afterwards, as I rested myhead on his body, Rita joined me and sat on him, andwe sobbed together.

I have lost my best friend and husband. I miss him somuch it is painful. Every single day I cry and don’tknow how I will get through the days. But I am notalone. I am so thankful to the cats. When I comehome, they run to the door to greet me. It makes mefeel loved and it makes it where I’m not coming hometo an empty house. As I sit on the couch and cry,Taylor will snuggle up next to my lap and look at mewith such love and concern. Most nights, Rita and Boosit in my lap at the same time or alternate. They sleepwith me so I am not alone. They run around the houseand do silly things, which makes me laugh.

I had thought my husband and I fostered cats to helpthem. I had thought we were selfless people for takingon some hard cases and for nursing many of them backto life. I had thought we were saving them. But itturns out…they were saving us!

I encourage you to foster, especially cats who may bedying or languishing at MaxFund. You may not realizeit, but they are angels in disguise.
