From the Team Rector Brexit has brought with it a climate of great uncertainty. We have a new Prime Minister. The Labour party is in turmoil as their MP’s are it seems out of touch with their members. The talk is of a re-alignment of politics is spoken of by political commentators. On the world scene there is the increase in acts of terrorism which create anxiety everywhere. In the midst of all this uncertainty where may we find security? For me the answer is always to be found in God. Through many thousands of years God has been constant in his love for all people everywhere. That never changes. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over troubled water” is a song with which I grew up and has been a constant source of comfort and inspiration for me and I know to many other people. In the troubled times of my own life God has always been the bridge who has seen me through. I have experienced him very much as a parent. Parents love their children, want only the best for them, and want to take their children’s troubles away. The reality is that often as parents we are impotent to change our children’s troubles. Handling them for themselves is an important part of their growing independence. Once they become “legally responsible” parents are powerless to change things but never stop loving, and always being there. That’s the sort of parent God is. Always there, always loving, but never interfering with our independence. Such a God is to be relied upon in a world of uncertainty.

Happy Clappy This anonymous author appears to have a bad experience of a Church service that featured either Worship Songs or a Worship Band, to come home and pen the following. Why not try singing along to the tune Repton and see if you agree.

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,

Forgive our foolish ways,

For most of us, when asked our mind,

Admit we still more pleasure find

In hymns of ancient days.

The simple lyrics, for a start,

Of many a modern song

Are far too trite to touch the heart,

Enshrine no poetry, no art,

And go on much too long.

O for a rest from jollity

And syncopated praise!

What happened to tranquility?

The silence of eternity

Is hard to hear these days.

Send Thy deep hush, subduing all

Those happy claps that drown

The tender whisper of Thy call.

Triumphalism is not all,

For sometimes we feel down.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness

Till all our strumming’s cease.

Take from our souls the strain and stress

Of always having to be blessed.

Give us a bit of peace.

Breathe through the beats of praise guitar

Thy coolness and Thy balm.

Let drum be dumb, bring back the lyre,

Enough of earthquake, wind and fire

Let's hear it for some calm.

Conversely if you love Worship songs or performance why not let our editor Chris Singh know your favorites and why, at [email protected], and we’ll publish your choices in the Magazine.

Haigh Road Infants visit Holy Trinity Church At Haigh Road Infant School the children have been learning about ‘Special Places’ in their Religious Education lessons and on the 22nd June almost 90 children visited a very special place. The children were thrilled to visit Holy Trinity Church and see for themselves the beautiful features both inside and outside the church. By following the church mouse trail the children were able to explore all the areas of the church.

They particularly liked the font, especially when they realised its age and this led to lots of discussion back at school as to how it might have been made and how many babies have been baptised there. Watching the awe and wonder in the face of one child as he looked at the stained glass window behind the altar was an amazing moment for me. He was overwhelmed by the detail and colours he saw and kept returning for another look! The children put Keith on the spot by asking some very interesting and profound questions. (Well done Keith for answering them.) As a school we would like to thank both Keith for arranging the church mouse trail and also Father Jeremy for his beautiful words at the end of our visit.

Prayer for Beginners. 1

(And we’re all beginners)

Prayer is a basic part of life as a Christian. We pray in church, at home, together, on our own… We offer thanks to God, ask his forgiveness when we get things wrong, pray for people we care about and much more. Often we pray ‘on the spur of the moment’, responding to situations as we meet them. Choosing to pray in a disciplined way, though, is a step further in life with God.

There are lots of patterns of prayer which we can use, and I’ll try to write a bit about some of them over the coming months. Please do share any ideas that have helped you to pray – we’re all in this together, and have a lot to learn from each other.

One thing is vital if you’re going to build a pattern of prayer – time. It doesn’t need to be a lot, but you need to set aside at least a few minutes regularly, and to make yourself do it – even if that means leaving some other things undone for the moment.

Get yourself comfortable, and don’t feel that you need to rush straight into praying. Often it helps to spend a few moments being still and breathing deeply to let your mind slow down a bit.

Then comes the praying part. If you’re trying to get started in this, why not use the prayer Jesus taught us? It’s both a wonderful prayer in itself and a great pattern for our own prayers.

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your Name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Amen.

From early on in the church, it’s been recommended that we stop to pray this prayer at least three times a day – on rising, at mid-day and in the evening. Try praying it slowly and thoughtfully this way for a few days.

Then take a bit longer, and perhaps once a day, stop after each line to think and pray about the kind if things the prayer mentions. So after ‘Our Father in heaven’ just take a moment to think about God – what do you believe he is like? Ask him to help you to know. After ‘Hallowed be your Name’, think of three things to praise and thank God about. Think through what each line of the prayer means, and spend a few moments praying about those things.

Try this for a week, and see how you feel about prayer then!

Many thanks to The Revd. Nick Watson for the 1

st part of this article.

Our Friends From America. Holy Trinity Church regularly receives enquiries from people who have moved out of the parish regarding their forebears. It is not always possible to be as helpful as we would like, but the ‘Open Church Group’ tries to be as helpful as possible.

Usually a member of the group will give a guided tour around the church and graveyard and, if known, will indicate where appropriate graves can be found.

I thought readers might like to follow through the story of two such visitors. I received an email in February 2016 from Tom Balne of New Jersey, U.S.A. He was coming to England in May to further research his family tree and was aware that there was a Rothwell connection.

His maternal grandmother was Lily Fox, from Rothwell. Lily’s father was Tom Fox (b. 1869) who married Eva Varley (b1867) and Lily married at Holy Trinity Church. I do have other details of the family, but if this basic information jogs any memories I am sure that Tom would be delighted to receive it.

Tom and his wife, Joanna, were delightful when we met at the church. They got the full, guided tour and were fascinated by all that I could relate and show them. When they returned to the States I was sent this picture taken inside Holy Trinity. I have to say that it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and one that I will always remember. If you can add anything to the story, please get in touch through the parish office and I will send it to Tom.

Governor Vacancy

A vacancy has arisen on the Governing Body for Rothwell CE Primary Academy. We are keen to recruit a governor with either financial skills and/or experience of strategic leadership. This is a great opportunity to play an important role in the life of Rothwell C of E and to contribute towards our improvement. Further information and application forms are available on request from the school office.

Thank you,

Darren Foulke Rothwell CE Primary Academy Queensway Rothwell LS26 0NB 0113 2739191

Moving On.

On the 1st July 2016, on a bright summers morning, Holy Trinity

Church welcomed the pupils and the staff of Rothwell Church of

England Primary Academy for their Leaver’s Church Service. In

addition to the pupils, about 25 parents and other family members

attended also.

The opening address was given by the Principal, Mr Foulke, and this

was followed by the everyone singing, “One more step along the

world I go”. This was followed by a series of songs, poems and bible

readings. The reception class gave out friendship rings. Year 2 sang

a song, Year 3 gave special awards to Year 6, Year 4 read a poem

and Year 5 said a prayer. The climax of the service came with ‘fond

farewells’ from Year 6.

The service was truly moving and it was a delight to see the whole

of the school taking part on this very important day. The P.C.C. had

bought each member of Year 6 a copy of the bible, inscribed with

the pupil’s name.

Father Jeremy blessed each individual bible and concluded the

service with a blessing and a prayer. Hopefully this will remain with

them throughout their lives.

Harvest Wellies After last year’s success with our fantastic decorated watering can Festival for Harvest, this year, we are asking YOU to help take part by decorating a pair of wellies!!!! We would love to make this year’s Harvest as exciting as last.

Sunday 25th September at 11 am is our Harvest Service.

Bring your wellies to church on

Friday 23rd between 4 and 6,

Saturday 24th between 1.30 and 3

Or you can bring them to Sunday morning’s service. We would like to keep them for a week on display.

So over the first few weeks of September look out for those old wellies you might not use any more! Ask family and/or friends, and neighbours if they would donate their old wellies, or even better, join us and decorate them themselves.

(If you would like to take part but have no wellies, don’t hesitate to contact me, see below)

The More wellies the better!

What difference has God made in your life? These are the answers some of the church congregation gave:

In all the big decision points in my life, I have felt God's guidance. (Anonymous)

God has helped me cope with bereavement, deal with serious illness and living alone. (Jennifer)

I've never known a life without God - He gives me a gentle push in the right direction. (Richard)

With God, I am guided to make better decisions. (Kimberley)

God has made a difference in every way possible. Without God I wouldn't be living here and I wouldn't have the family I have. (Rob)

God is always there for me: whatever happens, God is there holding me up. (Joyce)

We have the comfort that God is there with us. He is ever-present in my life and I would be lost

without him. (Pat and Shirley)

God will never let me go: holding me in dark times but always pushing me on - mostly where I don't much want to go. (Carol)

God gives me a sense of reassurance and support when times are hard. (Iain)

Running in Rothwell For years people said to me “you need to run”, “just give it a try”, “it’s good for you”, but every time I tried even to jog, I got about 10 meters and got a stitch. Instead of powering through, walking it off or resting and starting again, I just completely gave up because I thought I was going to pass out on the side of the road (wearing lycra) and I envisaged myself being found by a dog walker or an ambulance!

It’s not like me to give up on anything. Ever. I’m very determined and extremely stubborn. However, when it came to exercise, I just wasn’t interested, but (catch 22) I knew I needed to exercise and lose weight.

I trawled through motivational quotes like ‘you’re always 500 calories ahead of the person on the couch’ or ‘I may not be there yet but I’m closer than I was yesterday’ and ‘results will show up when you do’ and I’d also watch runners pass by me, or see the mighty Harriers storming through Rothwell but as inspired as I felt, I never applied myself.

In the end, I don’t know what made me put on a pair of trainers again, but last year I decided as a new year’s resolution that I would lose 1lb per week for a year. In terms of the bigger picture, that’s 52lbs or 3 and ½ stone. I didn’t join a weight loss group or follow a specific diet plan – I just stopped snacking, stopped gorging on cake and chocolate and started running.

One new pair of trainers, one gym membership and a bundle of gym kit later I put one foot in front of the other on the treadmill and never looked back. I ran inside, outside and I ran every day. I don’t know what I was running from, or where I was running to, but 5km soon turned into 10km and then that turned into doing half marathons - I felt like Forrest Gump!

I’ve trained/run all over Rothwell, Woodlesford, Oulton, Robin Hood, Methley and even ventured to Swillington and Allerton Bywater! Here are some of my favourite routes:

1. Lemonroyd Marina – the canal is flat and fast and is a perfect 5km route (not to mention the beautiful views).

Page 15: From the Team Rector - Rothwell District C of E · PDF fileFrom the Team Rector ... Till all our strumming’s cease. Take from our souls the strain and stress ... build a pattern

15

2. The Royds run is a route with an incline but plenty of opportunity to do interval training.

3. Rothwell –Woodlesford 10km

4. Rothwell Half Marathon

To date, I’ve lost 4 stone, and according to my running apps, since January 2015 I have run 613.1 miles outside and goodness knows how many more on the treadmill! I’ve got 4 medals and 5 race t-shirts to show for my efforts and I wear them with pride!

So if running is something you want to try, I’d love to have a running buddy/run in a group. I’ve never found someone who’s pace is the same as mine so if you fancy joining me - please feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] or meet at Rothwell Holy Trinity Church on Monday’s at 6pm from 8 August 2016 and we’ll set off from there.

The post code is LS26 0QL - the beautiful big church on the hill (near Morrisons). There’s plenty of parking if you want to drive down/get dropped off. There is a safe place to store your valuables and refreshments available afterwards.

Hope to see you soon.

New plans to expand network of support on money and debt

Did you know that more than eight million people in the UK are struggling in real financial distress? They have no access to other finance options, and so many resort to high cost loans to cover basic necessities such as food and fuel. This is having a devastating effect on physical and mental health, families and entire communities. To try and help, the Church of England has embarked on an ambitious program to grow a nationwide network of support for people to help them take action on money and debt. Pilot work under the Church Credit Champions Network across two regions has formed the beginnings of a ‘Just Finance Network’ to develop community finance and money advice services, and give people the skills they need to make sound financial decisions. This pilot has mobilized nearly 200 churches so far. There are now over 250 trained volunteers providing budget and debt advice. This pilot is expected to generate £2.2 million in social value. Imagine the impact this would have if it was national. The Archbishop has asked Church Urban Fund to deliver a national roll out of the Just Finance Network. To raise funds for this transformative work, CUF is running the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Mustard Seed Appeal. (www.cuf.org.uk/mustard-seed-appeal), CUF says: “Together we can grow the seed planted so courageously by the Archbishop into a real movement for positive change. In the Archbishop’s words, ‘We have to challenge the sovereignty of money and finance over every aspect of our life and to say in quite a revolutionary way that money is not in charge - human beings are the ultimate value’.”

Christian Values at Rothwell CE Primary Academy What a wonderful year we have had! We have achieved some fantastic results and had a very successful ‘National Society’ (SIAMS) inspection. We would like to start by sharing some of our favourite comments:

“Thoughtful behaviour from the children and aspiring attitudes to learning are the norm.”

“Because the children enjoy educational experiences and enrichment activities, they want to be in class.”

“The academy’s caring nature combines with the Christian values of service and challenge to enable good academic progress.”

“Through the application of the academy’s over-arching Christian value of loving care, children’s attitudes and learning behaviours have become aspirational and enthusiastic. The academy’s pastoral care and nurture for every child ensures that all are enabled to strive for their optimum educational attainment.”

“The parish clergy of Holy Trinity church support the life and worship of the school. The children regularly worship in the parish church at festivals and the start and end of each term. This enables the children and a growing number of families to be an integral part of the church’s worshipping community.”

These comments confirmed what we know about our academy and we are proud that we have built a successful school based on gospel values.

This is very evident in the exciting term we have had as you can see in the following photos. I would like to thank my pupils, parents and staff for a wonderful year and I would also like to thank Father Jeremy and the parish for their support this year. We really have a special school in Rothwell C of E.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration.

When you are little, it’s always great fun to go to a chum’s

birthday party. As you get older it is somehow not quite the same.

So I wasn’t too sure when the PCC announced that it would

organise an afternoon tea to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s four score and ten years.

Call me curmudgeonly if you like but, when my Dad was 90, none of the Windsors joined

with us to celebrate his magnificent achievement (I suspect that Dad will have words with

me for that observation!) However I could tell by the response of others that the idea had a

lot of positive support.

So, on Sunday 12th

June, following the

morning service I,

complete with a box

of ham sandwiches

and a box of cheese

sandwiches, which,

in true Blue Peter

fashion, I had made

earlier, joined other

members of the

parish in the Parish Centre to help celebrate the Queen and her ninety years.

How glad was I to take part in the celebrations, the hall was decked out in colours of red,

white and blue. There were union jacks, and pictures of the Queen and her family. A lot of

time and effort had been put into the event and it showed.

The people in attendance ranged from

babes in arms to people who were as old

as Her Majesty and the food, which had

been brought in by members of the

congregation, was truly scrumptious! In

addition, whilst people were eating, the

choir regaled us with quality choral work

and some good songs as well!

Everyone present agreed that it truly was a regal celebration and, as far as I was

concerned, it was on a par with my Dad’s party!
