From the Secondary School Pastoral Care Coordinators What do you first think when you hear the term mental health?

Last week, the Secondary School Pastoral Care Coordinators had the privilege of

attending the 2015 Propsych Mental Health In Schools Conference for two days,

and this is what they said ….

“Mental health is a state of mind that allows you to cope with the challenges of life and this

can be eroded by negative factors and promoted through positive factors.”

So, why is it important?

Good mental health is necessary for adults and children to flourish. Unfortunately

the latest statistics show that poor mental health is on the rise amongst our young

people and this is a cause for great concern.

Here is a snapshot of what is happening with depression in Australia at the

moment:

Up to 75% of mental health problems begin before the age of 24.

65% of people with mental health issues do not seek help.

21-28% of adolescents will experience an episode of major depressive disorder

by 19 years of age.

Depression is the most common new psychiatric condition which arises in

adolescents.

40-60% of adolescents who have an episode of depression will have a further

episode of depression in the next five years.

Depression is associated with poor academic performance, poor school

attendance, self-harm and adolescent suicide.

You can see the need to understand how this illness is changing the way our

students engage at school and engage in life as a whole.

The conference looked at factors that contribute to mental health and so we were

able to hear from experts who presented on depression, diet and eating habits,

loneliness, ability to fail well, drug dependency, sexual assault, the impact of

pornography on young people and effective school governance. It was incredibly

informative and here are just a few insights that we hope will be helpful for our

Covenant community:

Good practices that promote mental health:

A healthy diet consisting of good fats, complex carbohydrates and protein

Spending extended time together as a family and encouraging genuine

connections with others

Actively discussing positive mental health with our children from around

Years 5 and 6

Embracing failure and seeing it as an opportunity to grow and develop

Accessing online support options in conjunction with face to face help to

empower self-care in our young people

Not so good practices that erode mental health:

Ignoring that there is a long-term relationship between a poor diet (high in

sugar) and depression

Always linking “success” with happiness

Being constantly connected to the internet with no down time to investigate other

facets of life

Allowing internet relationships to replace face-to-face relationships

Allowing unsupervised access to the internet and not educating our young people

on the dangers and effects of pornography.

Another area of focus was the many free resources that are available to grow and build

mental health and resilience among our young people. Some examples which can all be

found online include the recently released National Nutrition Guide Food Pyramid,

Project Dinnertime, Online Mental Health Portals such as Beacon 2.0 and

MindHealthConnect, MindMatters, Bite Back program from the Black Dog Institute,

along with a range of smart phone apps including Check-in, Pillboxie, DeepSleep, Body

Beautiful, i-Cope and WhatsMyM3.

Covenant is committed to the positive mental health of our students and our desire is to continually partner with parents in

this all important endeavour. The knowledge and insight gained at the conference will be integrated into the school’s Pastoral

Care program.

As an additional note, to further grow strength in this area, Covenant is sending ten student representatives from Years 10

and 11 to a mental health forum in June. The externally run program will focus on providing these students with the skills

and insights to support their close friends who may be suffering from a mental health issue.

It is a privilege to be in the position of caring for our students, so feel free to contact any of the Pastoral Care Coordinators or

the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care if you would like to discuss the above in further detail.

State Cross Country – Primary

On Friday 29 May, 31 students from Years 3-6 competed in the Christian

Schools State Cross Country Championships. Many came in the top half of the

large races of around 150 people, with several in the first 40.

Our best results were:

Andrew Blevins – 16th in 10 year boys; Leighton Shaw – 13th in 12 year boys;

Tristan Turnbull – 9th in the 11 year boys; Bella Gosling – 9th in the 12 year

girls. Grace Dale ran exceptionally well to come 5th in the 12 year girls.

Well done to all our runners and especially Tristan, Bella and Grace who have qualified for the CIS

next month. Thank you to the parents who helped with transport and cheered on our runners.

Andrew’s Angle Bursary and Building Funds—please consider giving generously

With the end of the financial year fast approaching, it is a great time to consider

partnering with the community at Covenant. We have a long history of generosity.

The school pioneers gave financially for many years to the vision of Christian

education, even knowing their own children would not benefit.

You are invited to be part of the continuing culture. Donations to the Building and

Bursary funds are 100% tax deductible, and help reduce your tax and help the school

at the same time. They help to keep the school operating costs at a reasonable level so

that our school is affordable to as many Christian families as possible.

Donations to the Building Fund will be used for future building plans and donations

to the Bursary Fund are used to provide fee relief to families less financially able.

Click the following link or copy it into your web browser: Bursary Fund http://

www.trybooking.com/52364 or Building Fund http://www.trybooking.com/52340.

All donations will receive a tax deductible receipt. There is no fee for using this

service. If you would prefer to donate via cheque or EFT please contact me at

[email protected]. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Can You Help? We are seeking Christian parents with a heart for mums with young children to be

part of a new initiative starting later this year or early in 2016. We are planning a fun music program for mums together with

their young children aged between 0-3 years old. You will work as part of a team to run this program. Ideally you will need

to be available each Friday during school terms from 9.30am until 11.00am (i.e just after the Infants Assembly). No music

background is required. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Wendy Boase via email:

[email protected].
