From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Staffed by The Redemptorists Of all the seasons of the Church year, Advent is my favorite. I call Ad- vent “the gentle season” because its themes are filled with hope and gentleness. More than any other season of the year, Advent directs our attention to the future. While the readings for Lent begin with the words “Thus says the Lord”; the readings for Advent begin with the words “On that day”. Advent touches our human longing for a better and more peaceful world. In these days of terrorism and violence, Advent touches that part of the human heart that hopes for a better future, when violence will cease and all people will live in peace. When we become discouraged at the state of our world and our country, Advent renews the message of hope and tells us to believe that with Christ all things are possible; someday there will be a better world. Advent is also a time for quiet contemplation. While Lent challenges us to do the hard work of conversion and repentance; Advent calls upon us to simply wait for God to act, to simply trust that God will come into our world anew. Advent asks that we simply open our hearts to the presence of Christ, and that we quietly sit and wait for Christ to reveal himself to us in a new and fresh way. One of the beautiful symbols of Advent is the Advent Wreath. The wreath is a circle without beginning or end and so it is a symbol of eternity. Each week we light one more candle on the wreath. As it grows brighter we know that the Light of Jesus Christ will always conquer the darkness of this world. Society tends to skip Advent and simply rushes into Christmas; decorations go up, commercials appear well before t Thanksgiving. Please live Advent. Allow its beautiful, gentle themes to touch your heart. Allow the ever growing light to fill your darkness. Most importantly, allow yourselves to wait patiently for Christ’s love to grow ever deeper in your heart. Of all the seasons of the Church year, Advent is my favorite. I call Ad-vent “the gentle season” because its themes are filled with hope and gentleness. More than any other season of the year, Advent directs our attention to the future. While the readings for Lent begin with the words “Thus says the Lord”; the readings for Advent begin with the words “On that day”. Advent touches our human longing for a better

MASS INTENTIONS

Feast of the Immaculate ConceptionTuesday, December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of Obligation. Please join us for Mass at 7:00am, 12:10pm, 5:30pm and 7:00pm (Spanish).

An Evening of Manton Memories

Prayer for Mercy for RefugeesTo begin this Year of Mercy, all people of good will are invited to join with the Commu-nity of Sant’Egidio to pray for the welcome of immigrants and refugees, for refugees’ safety, and for peace in the lands from where they flee. A prayer service will be held on Friday, December 11th, 7:00pm here at the Basilica.

A Message from Our Basilica Music MinistryOur choir consists of dedicated members of this great Basilica who come each week to do our part to enrich the atmosphere of this great, sacred space. We are few in number, but are continually lifted by the spiritual act of contributing our time and enthusiasm. The season of Advent is an opportune time to serve your parish community by singing in the choir. It is an act of fellowship that is uniquely meaningful. All we ask is for you to be spiritually willing to attend a Wednesday rehearsal and a quick warm-up prior to the 9:00 Mass. If you are interested in joining the choir, please leave your contact informa-tion at the Rectory Office or email [email protected]

For Christmas Midnight Mass (and most special liturgies) we enhance our forces by hir-ing professional singers and instrumentalists. Please consider sponsoring a professional musician, $250 will pay for an instrumentalist and $175 will cover the cost of a singer. Donations for this purpose can be mailed or droppped off at the Rectory Office. Please specify in the check memo line, Basilica Music Ministry. May your Advent season be rich in prayer and spiritual reflection!

Volunteers NeededChristmas is coming and we are in need of volunteers to help us decorate this beautiful basilica. Please consider offering some time to help decorate the church this year. We will have a special meeting on Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the rectory for all those who would like to help. Simply leave your name and phone number with the rectory office.
