From the Rector By Fr. John It’s summer in the Pacific Northwest! As we slow down during the summer months, we can pause and reflect on our lives – our shared lives as members of the St. John’s community and our individual lives as Christians seeking a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

Reflect

I plan to re-read the baptismal promises made on my behalf as a child and which I affirmed at confirmation. Baptism is the foundation of our Christian faith. Its promises are basic to living a good Christian life.

For me, the challenge is regulating doing with being. I like to be involved in all sorts of worthwhile projects, each with its own value. Do I provide adequate time for quiet reflection, study and prayer? Do I measure what I am doing by quality rather than quantity? Do I seek God in everything that I do and in the way that I live?

Relax

During the summer, we should all follow the example of Jesus, who periodically went off by himself, away from ministry, preaching, teaching and healing, to pray to God for guidance and for the strength to continue in his life’s path. Our society pushes us to constant busyness, even during vacations. Let’s rebel and set aside a generous amount of time to relax. Let’s turn off our computers and cell phones for awhile. Let’s treat ourselves to the gift of unscheduled time by ourselves and with those we love.

July 20 Block Party Needs You By Carolyn Maddux St. John's outreach to the neighborhood, our July 20 Block Party, is approaching fast. Crews are forming now to walk the neighborhood within the next week and deliver invitations, taking the opportunity to chat with our neighbors if they're home and interested.

If you're up for helping with this aspect of the outreach, please contact Carolyn Maddux at 360-426-2268 or email [email protected].

We still need volunteers for the event itself, from 1 to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20. And you may not want to miss the schedule of events either.

The afternoon will begin with liturgical dance and choral music by Spiritus and the Jubilate Choir. There will be organ music, Aztec dancers (Danza Quetzalcoatl de Olympia), jazz with Artesian Rumble and, finally, vocal, guitar and percussion music by the musicians from Iglesia de San Juan. For the kids, there will be piñatas, silhouette-making, face-painting and, we hope, a bounce castle. Hosts at various places of interest around the church, where there will be displays and information, will visit with participants.

Food will feature eggrolls from our Cambodian community, taquitos from our Hispanic outreach and hotdogs on the grill, lemonade and ice cream. We'll need kitchen help, hosts and helpers for the organizers of activities for kids.

If you can help, contact Michelle in the church office or Carolyn Maddux at 360-426-2268 or email [email protected].

From the Rector (continued from page 1) It is easy to give advice! We recently took a trip to the east coast to visit with family and friends. We covered 5 cities in ten days. Relax? Not so much, but we had a great time. We’ll relax later…

Refresh

St. John’s is a community filled with the Spirit. We are praying, learning, working and playing together for the love of God. In September, we will launch our ministries and programs with vigor. In order to be fully present and engaged in those activities, we must take some time to become refreshed and re-invigorated. Let’s treat ourselves to some special time and some special activities that delight our hearts and free our souls. Then when we are called upon to serve our church, we will be ready to say “Yes, Lord, according to your will.”

I wish you a peace-filled, restful and fun summer!

Fiesta Latina Father Don and The Hispanic Ministry Team Thanks to everyone in the St. John’s-San Juan congregation for the generous support of this year's Fiesta Latina. All the beautiful (and sometimes amusing) donations made the auctions rewarding and fun for all of us. The attendance, and the hard work of many, made the event memorable.

The food was delightful, and the cooks great! Everyone, from our costumed greeters at the door to the cleanup crew, made us proud. We have a tiny budget for this important facet of our community life, but the Fiesta does a great deal to keep this ministry of worship, teaching and compassionate outreach a strong part of who we are.

Thank you again for your prayers and support.

Spiritual Pilgrimage By Padre Don Remember our Spiritual Pilgrimage beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16. We will gather for opening prayers in front of the Governor Hotel, where our first church building once stood, and proceed to First Baptist Church, which was built as St. John's in 1889-1890. After worship in the Baptist Church, we will gather at our present church home for lunch. More details next month.

Faith Formation Outreach Committee to Receive Birthday, Thanks, and Special Remembrance Offerings Each Sunday, when we are invited to come forward to honor special events, we have the option of placing a donation in the small box. This year, these funds will be given to the Outreach Committee.

Your Vestry believes outreach is a vital part of our Parish ministry. However, due to budget cuts, other funds were not available for outreach.

The Outreach Committee will discern where to spend funds in our community and the world. This includes funds for the monthly dinner provided by our volunteers at the Salvation Army.

During the year, the Outreach Committee will also promote other opportunities to raise funds. With your help and support, our Parish will make generous gifts to help those who need it the most.

Education for Ministry By Usrah Claar-Peck Many of us feel we are familiar with the Bible and have a fair understanding of what it means to be a Christian. Our knowledge may have been formed in childhood and continued through regular or sporadic church attendance. However, it has been said that many of us are walking around with an eleven-year-old’s theology, trying to face adult life issues.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is designed to engage intellect, curiosity and reason into an in-depth study of our heritage and our current life as Christians.

EfM uses a seminar approach, incorporating worship, independent study and theological reflection in a community setting of not more than twelve participants.

Surprise Party for Portaros In the photo below, Charo and Gustavo Portaro, prepare to cut cake after a festive potluck surprise party at St. John's July 15. The Portaros' daughters Angie, Alessandra and Brenda organized the event.

After the Sunday evening mass, the couple entered the parish hall to find not only friends from La Iglesia de San Juan but family and friends from elsewhere, all gathered to help them celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary and Charo's birthday.

Charo and Gustavo are lay preachers and Eucharistic ministers, and Gustavo is on the Vestry at St. John's.

Guided by trained mentors, participants spend 4 academic years exploring the Hebrew scriptures, Christian scriptures, development of Christian theological thinking and the meaning of ministry in current life.

In England, EfM is called Exploring Faith Matters. In the US, this exploration of faith matters is used by multiple denominations (especially Episcopal and Lutheran) to strengthen the people in the pews.

Starting in September, the EfM group will meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-6:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church - Olympia.

For further information, talk to EfM mentors John Guydish (943-5472) and Usrah Claar-Peck (570-2211) for information or enrollment. The enrollment deadline is July 16, 2014. The cost is $350 for the first year (this is a reduced fee due to St. John’s sponsoring the course). The fee includes books, learning materials and trained mentors.

A Letter from Mother June Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Summer is a time of transition. Thousands of students have said good-bye to their school mates and are seeking meaningful employment. Others are looking forward to college and more studying.

This time of change can leave even the strongest person wondering how to cope with it all. If you are the parent, grandparent, brother or sister of one of these students, you will all recognize a shift in your daily life. Although these changes differ depending on the situation, they still impact your lives.

When our lives seem out of control, we have one who can help. Our Lord knows exactly what we are going through. Nothing is hidden from God. If we could only trust without reservation that which God has in store for us, we could live free of much of that anxiety that threatens our well-being.

Many years ago, when I transitioned from the work force to seminary fulltime, I was introduced to this quote from Thomas Merton. I think it contains wisdom for all who are undergoing or are about to enter a time of transition. Let the words sink into your soul. Rest in the fact that God loves us without limits and we are invited to do likewise.

My Lord God I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that my desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Thomas Merton

Children and Youth St. John's Youth Group By Dorn Barr Summertime is playtime and we had a great time at Eastside Bowling and Pizza Hut to end the year!!!

As we get ready for The Bishop's visit on June 29, we will have some summer activities. In July, we are having a fundraiser during the Lakefair parade. We will sell water, soda and cookies in the parking lot! The very next day we will be working on the Block Party and inviting our neighborhood in to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. John's.

Please email me if you plan on participating in either of these activities at [email protected].

Camp time is coming. If you plan on going to Camp Michael this year, be sure to register. Registration forms are available at the church office.

Our garden is growing and hopefully the corn will be knee high by the fourth of July. We need someone to occasionally water the tomatoes for us during the month of July.

Enjoy the sun - I know it is out there somewhere!

That's a Wrap! By Denise Hammer Sunday school concluded on June 8, the first Sunday of Pentecost. The children went to Lincoln

Sesquicentennial 150th Anniversary Cookbook By Tonia Morrison In celebration of our Sesquicentennial 150th Anniversary, the Vestry has suggested we put together a Cookbook.

The Vestry started collecting recipes last fall, but we need more. We need recipes in all categories including main dishes, side dishes, salads, soups, and, of course, the ever popular desserts and sweets. If you have a special other recipe, that would be welcome too.

Elementary School for some fun on the playground and enjoyed a snack together. A few other children at the playground were invited to share in the snack and met the children of St. John's.

Afterwards, the class returned to St. John's to carry the baskets of food donations up the aisle at the offering. Then they returned to the classroom to prepare for the surprise procession.

The children donned colorful shirts and wings, along with self-made antennae, and covered up in a green cloth that transformed them into a caterpillar. This was the creation of Carol Thompson, Sunday school teacher. Many weeks ago, Carol procured this length of cloth and envisioned it as a caterpillar costume. From there, the idea grew that the children could go from caterpillar to butterfly, representing their transformation and growth as Christ's youngest disciples.

The children processed up the aisle to guitar music played by Randy Hammer, putting their trust and faith in each other to make it carefully up the aisle without being able to see clearly inside the caterpillar. Once at the front, they shed their caterpillar skin to emerge as butterflies. A parent graciously agreed to read a short verse from Galatians. Each child then received a small gift in appreciation of their participation in Sunday school throughout the year. With that, the Sunday school year drew to a close.

Around the Parish History and More History By Jenny Louden Our altar Cushions tell our history. When the needlework for the altar cushions was completed in 1974, the descriptions of their significance was shared with the congregation. Starting at the Gospel side of the Altar, the cushions tell this story:

First cushion, 1853 – The Rev. John D. McCarthy arrives by canoe to conduct the first Episcopal services north of the Columbia River. He came first to Steilacoom and then to Olympia. His interest in the city of Olympia continued until 1860.

Second cushion, 1860 – The first recorded baptism in St. John’s.

Who Is God? Art Exhibit By Teresa Marie Cowley

Museum Contempo, located at 68 SE Lynch Road, Shelton, WA, featured an international art exhibit for the month of June. Gallery directors Pat and Andrea Mastrangelo asked artists to submit and create works of art answering the question, Who is God?

Fifty-three artists submitted up to three selections of art that included paintings, glass and sculptures. I am honored that 2 of my art banners

with calligraphy were accepted for the exhibit and one was selected for the Who is God? book.

The art banners are called I AM the True Vine, I AM the Bread of Life and I AM the Alpha and the Omega. I also created a 6-foot table runner to match the I AM the Bread of Life banner.

For the art reception, Carolyn Maddux made delicious homemade bread. Father Don Maddux dried rye grass to add to the display.

Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are so good in how they work out all the details.

The Bookworm’s Nook By Jenny Louden One of our new books in the St. John’s Library has an intriguing title. This is When I Prayed for Patience…God Let Me Have It! This little book is by Jeanne Zornes. Its focus is on the trials in life that teach us to trust God and to wait and to put our own self-will on the shelf. The author has clearly lived what she shares, and she has a good sense of humor about her difficulties. Furthermore, this book is strongly Bible-based throughout, with several thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter. I suspect it would make an interesting group study.

July Potluck By Chuck Moore A Barbeque Potluck is planned for the 4th of July at the church. Cooking starts at 5 p.m. Wine will be served at 6 p.m. Eating starts at 6:30 p.m. Please bring a side-dish, dessert or meat if you're not into chicken.

If you would like to help, contact Chuck at [email protected].

Supporting Your Library By Jenny Louden Many thanks to all of you who donated books for the June Jumble and to all who bought books there. We netted over $300 in book sales, and we will

donate ten percent of the total to the Outreach Committee Budget. If you forgot to bring books you’d like to pass on, please save them for us. We will be selling books again at the Christmas Faire.

Special thanks, of course, to our Library volunteers who worked so hard to sell the books: Mary Knotts, Janice Jackson, and Gail Hall!

Spiritus was one part of the high festival of Pentecost on June 8. Michiko Fujii, Maria McClarty, Mary Alice Olson and Donna Pallo-Perez danced to the lively bossa nova beat of Come, Gracious Spirit. Under the direction of Carol Sherrell and Sharon Wallace, Jubilate sang in perfect synchronization to a recording made 2 years ago of the same music. Perhaps a first at St. John's!

On June 15, Mary Alice joined her longtime liturgical dance friend, Signora Armstrong, to dance the Trinity hymn Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winlock.

You can catch Spiritus at the start of the July 20 Block Party. At 1:15, we will dance Come, Gracious Spirit on the wide front porch of our 20th Street entrance. Then 2 9-year-old girls, Caelyn Hammer and Salyda Son, will dance Look and See to a sweet Korean folk melody. Jubilate will again sing for both dances.

St. John's wonderful volunteers serve coffee and cookies to weary travelers passing through the Scatter Creek rest stop on I-5 south. Their cash donations help fund the outreach budget.

Through the outreach budget, St. John's supports crucial charitable organizations in our south sound community, such as the Union Gospel Mission's Free Dental Clinic, the Free Neighborhood Clinic, and the YWCA's "Other Bank."

Please plan on contributing any way you can--with a four-hour shift at the coffee and cookie stand or by providing home-baked cookies!

Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Parish Hall. For more information, contact Sherry Sullivan at 705-1974.

Our El Hogar Student, Jahir By Sue Michie We are nearing the $500 mark for raising money to support Jahir at El Hogar. El Hogar is the orphanage/school in Honduras, supported by the Episcopal Church.

Jahir is now 9 years old and we have supported him since he entered the School of Love and Hope (primary school) at El Hogar.

Our goal is to raise $1,800 by February of 2015 when the new school year begins in Honduras. We are on track to achieve that goal. Thanks to you, the many godparents of Jahir, for your continued support - mostly on the second Sunday of each month when the loose change in the offering plate goes to our El Hogar support. Cash and checks are also welcome, but you must write on them El Hogar to see that it goes towards Jahir's support.

Special thanks go to St. John's Youth Group for their contribution of nearly $5 in loose change from their Bake Sale. Your generosity is appreciated.

Continue to keep Jahir and El Hogar in your prayers. They are doing wonderful things at El Hogar in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

TEXAS 4000: 10th Year at St. John’s! SAVE THE DATE! Arriving July 10 Kathryn McLeod and Jan Akin On Thursday, July 10, an amazing team of cyclists will arrive at St. John’s midway on their

journey from the University of Texas, Austin, to Anchorage, Alaska. They ride to raise awareness and funds for cancer.

As in the 9 previous years of hosting, we have committed to providing host homes for a one night stay. Cyclists will arrive at approximately 4 p.m. We will house their bicycles in the Parish Hall overnight.

Everyone is invited to celebrate their efforts by hosting a potluck dinner in their honor that evening. The exact time will be announced, but please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Twenty-four cyclists will share their stories and inspirations and invite us to also share our stories of how cancer has impacted our lives.

If you are willing to host 2 or more cyclists on the night of July 10, please look for the sign-up list in the Parish Hall. We prefer to send at least 2 cyclists to each household. You are asked to provide breakfast and return them to St. John’s early the next morning, July 11. Time will be specified upon their arrival. Their time calls attention to and raises funds for cancer treatment, research and services. To contribute, make your check payable directly to TEXAS 4000. You can place it in a basket at the potluck or give it to the office before July 10.

Let’s celebrate our tenth year of hosting the TEXAS 4000!

On the Rack By Laurie Young It's Ordinary Time! The feast of Pentecost brought the seasons of our church year to an end until Advent. The period in between is referred to as Ordinary in reference to the ordinal, or numbered, sabbaths that we count as Sundays after Pentecost.

We will be hosting some of our neighbors this month at our Block Party and putting our lovely church on tour. For those and other summer guests who are curious, the best material to introduce them to the Episcopal faith fills the third row from the bottom on the rack of pamphlets. Remember to point them out to your own guests who are interested or have questions.

Below that will be a changing selection of titles for your spiritual edification. This month, Tips for Worshipers helps us get the most out of our worship experience, and Churching the Unchurched advises on sharing that experience. On the bottom with Day by Day are Spanish language titles. Bienvenitos -/Welcome to the Episcopal Church includes text in Spanish and English on facing pages.

Don't forget to check out The Rack as you head for the parking lot this summer. You’ll find reading material on subjects of interest for all seasons.

We also donated to ARC, young women and families in need. What an amazing time to help others! God Bless! We thank you all!

Organ Update You still have a chance to support the organ replacement project at St. John’s. Yes, things are going well.

The donor provided funding, and last week St. John’s completed the purchase with a check to Plymouth Church. This was done in a lovely organ farewell ceremony on June 15 at Plymouth. Representatives from St. John’s, including Fr. John and Georgie, Mary Ann Mahurin, our project manager, Chuck Moore, and Kary and Janet Hyre received the beloved Plymouth Schlicker organ.

The work of moving the organ has begun. On Monday, June 16, Marceau and Associates began the painstaking process of disassembling the organ and removing the front most and largest of the pipes. That process will take several weeks.

Next steps are mapped out as well:

St. John’s will provide short-term storage for most of the pipe work. (The first stored pipes are due June 23, with the organ console arriving on June 26)

The organ action and supporting framework will be taken to the Marceau shop for complete refurbishment and fine tuning.

There will also be changes to the footprint. The organ is currently centered at the front of Plymouth Church. At St. John’s it will be divided to frame the altar and cross.

The donor is paying for removal, refurbishing, support system changes and reinstallation.

Money has been raised to make the necessary changes to St. John’s to receive the organ.

There are always unanticipated expenses, whether it be sales taxes or needed enhancements to the organ’s enclosure at St. John’s.

You can help by purchasing one of the 3000+ organ pipes (sizes range from seventeen-feet down to teeny-tiny). Consider purchasing a pipe in honor or in memory of a special person in your life. Your contribution will be acknowledged on a plaque displayed forever in the sanctuary.

Please consider joining in the organ-project St. John’s with an organ-pipe purchase.
