I encourage you to consider that queson well, because the way you answer it could very well determine the fate of the world. Are you going to spend your next hour doing something kind and compassionate, or are you going to frier it away on one of the many banal distracons of modern life? Are you going to somehow transform our world for the beer, or are you instead going to help it coast along for yet another hour just the way it was? Will you make something magnificent and extraordinary of your next hour, or will you allow it to remain mundane and commonplace? In Judaism, quesons such as these are far from academic. In fact, the great Jewish teacher, Maimonides (1135-1204), encouraged us to think hard about how we spend each moment of our lives. “A person should always look at himself as equally balanced between merit and sin, and the world as equally balanced between merit and sin,” Maimonides taught. “If he performs one sin, he ps his balance and that of the enre world to the side of guilt and brings destrucon upon himself…but if he performs one mitzvah, he ps his balance and that of the enre world to the side of merit and brings deliverance and salvaon to himself and others.” According to Maimonides, the fate of our own lives and the fate of the world are not for others to determine, nor are they even for us to determine at some point in the future. Rather, at every moment, eternity hangs in the balance. Right now, he taught, you stand on a precipice. Do something good in the next moment, and your desny will be great – mess things up, and it won’t. Indeed, right now, he taught, the world hangs in the balance, and it’s up to you to determine its desny. Do something good, and you’ll transform the world. Mess things up, and things will quickly head downhill. OK, maybe Maimonides was engaging in a bit of hyperbole here. He was, aſter all, asking us to view things “as if” they hung in the balance. Sll, a perspecve such as his can, if taken to heart, transform our very lives. Indeed, the decisions that we make every moment are what shape our desny, and the decisions of people such as ourselves determine the fate of the world. Who determines the fate of the universe? You do. And when do you determine it? Right now? Find us on Facebook @templebnaikvah Connued on Page 2...
