From the Principal After a wonderful last day of term where students participated in a range of extension and enrichment activities, we have started term 2 in a very focussed manner. Students in year 7 and 9 will sit NAPLAN testing next week, and are looking forward to their pizza reward lunch after this. Students in year 10 have started work on transition and learning about the college system of TCE and how to attain points to achieve this in year 12. They are also learning about VET training courses and how these can support attainment of year 12 TCE. With the weather cooling down now we must remind all students that non-school hoodies are not part of our uniform and should not be worn. We have several jackets that students can purchase. If you need a jacket but have financial limitations right now, please contact me to discuss and we may be able to help you out. All students are expected to make good choices with the wearing of uniform. Next week we have our 2019 student information night. Please share with any families who have year 6 students so they don’t miss out on an informative and interesting evening. National Assessment Program – Literacy and

Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2018

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and

Numeracy) commenced in Australian schools in

2008. Each year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9

participate in common national tests which assess:

Reading

Writing

Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and

punctuation)

Numeracy.

The scheduled dates for the tests in 2018 are Tuesday 15

May, Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May.

The benefits of participating in NAPLAN testing:

NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every

child to progress through school and life such as

reading,

writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

NAPLAN results provide valuable information on

how your child is progressing against national

minimum standards of literacy and numeracy skills

expected for each year level.

The NAPLAN tests provide you as parents with an

individual report that shows your child’s results and

a comparison of your child’s performance against all

other Australian students in their year level.

Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine

your child’s areas of strength and where future

focus is required and how best to provide

support or extension activities.

School teachers use the online NAPLAN Toolkit to

analyse your child’s results. The Toolkit provides

detailed information right down to the individual

question with links to teaching strategies.

Principals, senior staff and others use NAPLAN

results to inform school planning and to allocate

resources and support including informing decisions

around targeted programs and initiatives for

Individuals and groups.

The best way you can assist your child is by helping them

to feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the

tests, and assure them that the tests will give them an

opportunity to show what they have learned in class.

For more information about the national tests, please visit

the national NAPLAN website at:

POSITIVE EDUCATION Did you know that Bayview is implementing a Positive

Education initiative, as part of our school goal of

developing an aspirational and high performing school

culture.

Positive Education brings together the science of Positive

Psychology with best practice teaching to encourage and

support individuals, schools and communities to flourish.

We refer to flourishing as a combination of ‘feeling good

and doing good’. Positive Education focuses on specific

skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships,

build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience,

promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Through teaching these valuable life skills, Bayview College

provides its students with an increased capacity to learn

effectively, as well as offering them a strong foundation on

which they can build a successful life.

At the start of year, staff attended a 2 day workshop

delivered by Mick Walsh. The professional learning helped

staff gain valuable insight, new learning and the skills to

help deliver positive education across our school. Why

not ask your son or daughter about what is happening in

their classrooms around positive education?

On Saturday 19 May the team from Harmony Garden

centre are opening their doors to Bayview Secondary

College. We will be down there for the day hosting

activities for the kids, a BBQ and you can collect your

pre-ordered Krispy Kreme doughnuts from the centre on

the day!

The team at Harmony do amazing work and support us

with our community garden and many, many other

activities in the school.

So collect your doughnuts, come buy a sausage and drink,

have a look at our produce and what Harmony has to

offer. Support a local who supports us!

In the last week of term, we had some of our year 11 and

12 students take part in a MYROAD mentoring session

MYROAD is an exciting online mentoring program where

industry volunteers share their insights into the world of

work with students in classrooms anywhere across

Australia. Focussed on empowering young women in their

senior years of secondary school. MYROAD matches

trained industry mentors from diverse industries and

occupations with students via videoconferencing

technology. Mentors will inspire students to think about

their future in new ways while highlighting the importance

of 21st century skills like digital communication in the

workplace and provide tools for building and maintaining

effective relationships in the workplace.

CAREER CAFE

On Tuesday May 8, the college was lucky to host Ronnel

Riggs, a former basketball referee, who grew up in

Queenstown and now runs his own You Tube

production company CHARGERS TV, for the Hobart

Chargers Basketball Club.

Ronnel encouraged our students to be confident, chase

your dreams and believe that you can. He linked his talk

back to sound out our very own students who run their

own You Tube channels and give them tips on how to

prepare for success and we will never get it 100% right.

Other messages included setting small goals and then

ticking them off and surround yourself with positive

people. We also chatted over yummy Subway lunch and

some juice

Massive thanks to Bridget from Collective Ed, for

arranging for Ronnel to visit the college and Aden

Bosworth for taking a video of the talk for our own social

media streams.

Our next Career Cafe will see former Australian Rugby

Union Player Luke Burgess come and share his story on

Tuesday May 22.
