From the Principal Dear Parents, This week we welcome our Japanese students who will be staying with our families from Wednesday. A short assembly for these students will be on Friday at 9am. I wish our host families a wonderful time with their Japanese son / daughter for the week. Nude Food: Well done to Yr6 for the way in which they are educating other students about looking after our environment. A group of boys in Yr6 presented their own acted and directed video-clip at assembly last Friday, aimed at reducing rubbish in the school. It was hilarious and very well received by the audience of 770 students. Their message, given in a kid-friendly, funny way, was extremely effective – well done boys. We are finally in the week leading to our STM Fete this Saturday. I urge parents, where possible, to please put one family member’s name down on your class roster for help on Fete Day. If nearly every family donates one or two hours of their time to help their class stall (or a friend’s stall) then this will be a massive success for our school fete. The Fete Team, Stall Holders and helpers have been preparing for months – they need you to support them on the day. If you still have raffle tickets, they must be returned this week – ASAP. All tickets (sold and unsold) need to be accounted for. It takes time and people-power to sort the tickets, so please send them in early for this to happen. If anyone can help pack up or set up for the fete – we need you - please let Glen Bucklar know. Please read the Fete News this week for all the little bits and pieces of help you can offer- it’s Family Week so the students can help make or bake lots of goodies for our wonderful Fete. Marist Bicentennial Celebrations: Last Saturday I travelled to St Stephen’s Cathedral along with four of our Yr6 student leaders, Nick, Jasmine, Byron & Millie, as well as Christian from Prep and Mrs Pitot. We joined up with students and staff from St Teresa’s, as well as staff and student representatives from around 9 other Queensland Catholic schools who share our Marist Membership and Charism. We attended the Mass to celebrate 200 years of educating students in the Marist charism and tradition. 200 years ago in the peaceful little French rural village of La Valla, and amid the very challenging times of the French Revolution, Marcellin Champagnat started his community of brothers to educate children in rural areas of France who could not get a good education. From that humble gathering of educators, the Marist Bothers grew to open schools and pastoral centres all around the world. In Australia there are over 50 schools who are either Marist owned (like Marist Ashgrove) or, like our school, were started in the charism of the Marist Brothers (our first 2 principals were Marist Brothers). In that harsh era of the French Revolution, Marcellin Champagnat and his Brothers of Mary educated children in a loving environment, where corporal punishment was not to be used and where every child was equally loved and respected. Marcellin Champagnat wanted all children to know how much God loved them. The Mass started with an apology from the brothers for the times in the past since Marcellin, where they have failed children in their care and where there has been abuse in their ranks. They called, not only for forgiveness for these failings, but for a bright future that reflects the real charism and values started by Marcellin and his early brothers. There was also recognition of the wonderful work carried on by the Marist community in Australia, both in education and in their many pastoral endeavours. I believe that this Marist Charism, which Anne-Maree will explore more in the RE section, has made our school very rich in spirituality and Christian action. It has become a core part of our Catholic identity and our lived Christianity, which I am sure St Marcellin Champagnat would smile upon today. At the Mass, our students joined me in being called forward to accept a framed certificate in recognition of St Thomas More being a member of Marist Schools Australia. After Archbishop Mark Coleridge blessed the certificates, Ms Pam Betts, Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, and Dr Frank Malloy, National Director of Marist Schools Australia, presented each school with their certificate. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for our school and enjoyed the occasion. All the very best to the students participating in the AFL on Thursday and those in the Band festival on Friday. Have fun. God Bless and have a great week Patrick Colley Principal

Assistant Principal Religious Education Dear St Thomas More Families, On Saturday, our school was represented beautifully by Nik, Jasmine, Byron, Milly (and Christian) at the Marist 200 Year Celebration Mass at St Stephen’s Cathedral. We shared in the events of the day with the students from St Teresa’s College, our fellow Marist school in Noosa. It was a lovely event to be part of as it celebrated the richness of the Marist story over the past 200 years and provided a wonderful moment to acknowledge and thank the Brothers for their commitment to ‘making Jesus known and loved’ in the Marist way. During the Mass, Archbishop Mark spoke of the amazing vision, faith and hard work of Marcellin Champagnat as he went about educating and supporting young people during in post-revolution France. He told us that this Charism belongs to us all – we are the people who bring Marcellin’s Charism to life each day. What a wonderful challenge! It was a delight to see Br John Wells who many of you may remember. Br John wanted me to pass on his best wishes to the St Thomas More community. Tomorrow our school will join with the Parish community to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary with a Mass at 10am in the STM Centre. All staff and students will attend this Mass to honour the significant role that Mary plays in the life of our Church and particularly our Marist School Community. Parents are most welcome to join us for this celebration. With fete coming up this Saturday it is a great week to think of one way each family could be part of a project to bake, make or donate something for either the Cake, Morning Tea, Sweets or Craft stall. Every donation will make a difference to the success of the fete. A handout has gone home with students today to help you out with ideas for your family week project. A big thank you to all the wonderful members of our community who have worked so hard over many months to organise and prepare for the fete. Please know that everyone’s efforts are so appreciated by our school and enable the fete to be a great event not only for our school but also the wider community. Many blessings for the week ahead. Ann-Maree

Assistant Principal Administration Early student pick up this Friday for Fete 2017 preparation! Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

Friday the 18th of August (the end of this week) is the day before the Fete. The school asks for students to be picked up at midday

so the grounds can be prepared for the following day. Normal afternoon duties will run from 12-1215. Staff are heavily involved

in the set up so we ask that you make arrangements for this day. If you are unable to pick your children up at midday, supervision

will be organized for the remaining students. If you are planning on picking your child up at the normal time you will need to park

and collect them from the prep area.

If you are coming in to help set up a stall, please ensure you keep your children with you. It is a safety risk to have students walking

around the school without supervision.

Uniform- Please see below regarding the school’s uniform expectations.

One of the reasons we have a uniform at school is so that we all come together as a part of the same thing, with a sense of equality.

That is, we don’t distinguish ourselves from one another by what we wear, in fact what we wear unites us and brings us together.

The uniform policy has been revisited every year by the School Board and emphatically endorsed. Wearing the uniform is a part

of the STM deal. Students need parental support to meet this expectation, so I encourage parents not to be swayed by anyone

that there is a relaxation of these expectations- whether that be another parent, a student or even a retail store.

The school asks that parents pay particular attention to the expected colour of ribbons being worn in girls’ hair. Hair ornaments

are not a part of the uniform and the size of hair ribbons should be kept reasonable. The school uniform shop has the appropriate

ribbons and I’ve included photos of them. The goal of the ribbon is to look neat and keep the hair back, not to stand out as a

fashion statement. he school uniform shop also has plenty of white laces to swap out if the mostly white sports shoes you have

bought have the wrong coloured laces. Socks should be above the ankle and not hidden in shoes. Formal uniform black shoes

should be black leather or black leather look.

Fete Help Still Needed If you haven't yet volunteered to help out on a Fete stall, please do so. Many helpers makes this day easier and shares the work

load. One hour is a small amount of time which will make a big difference, so please offer your help to your child's fete stall.

Fete Pack Up Crew Thanks to all the volunteers for the pack up crew! This will make a huge difference. If you haven’t nominated and find

yourself available, please stop and help. The more helping out the sooner the task is completed.

ICAS Maths Tomorrow is our last UNSW test- and it is Maths and will be held at 9am.

Japanese Visitors This Wednesday our Japanese friends arrive on their annual visit. It will again be great to host them and we thank Mrs. Sobey for coordinating their visit on behalf of our school. Have a great week. Glen Bucklar
