READING IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT IN SECONDARY

EDUCATION!Several English teachers attended the NZATE Conference in Christchurch during the holiday break. One of the key messages that we came away with was the importance of young people continuing to develop their reading by attempting more challenging texts than they are used to and reading regularly - at least an hour a day.

Parents and caregivers can support their student's reading habits by suggesting books they have read, talking to them about what they are reading and modelling reading to them.

If you want advice about how to support your child's reading please contact the school library on this email: [email protected] or check out the following websites:

Tae Kwon DoOne of Rosehill’s top athletes, Courtney Church is a Year 13 student who is competitive and very successful in Tae Kwon Do. Courtney recently competed and performed at an exceptionally high standard, receiving Gold in Sparring, Silver in Patterns, Gold in Team Patterns and Gold in Team Sparring! Counties also took out best region & Courtney’s club took out best Club so it was a fantastic weekend all round. As you can see in the images Courtney looks outstanding and very focused on her next goal which is to take out the World Cup in Hungary in October!

Football Kanga Cup TournamentThe Auckland Football Federation recently sent an U14’s team to compete in the Kanga Cup football tournament in Canberra, Australia. Rosehill student Pavinir Khun-Khun was one of the young players selected for this team, which is a huge achievement as players were selected from the top Auckland Football Federation teams in their age group to represent

Auckland at this international tournament. The AFF U14s team performed exceptionally well, placing 2nd overall and suffered their only loss 1-0 in the Grand Final.

Pavinir scored 4 of the teams 28 tournament goals, with a hat-trick in the 2nd game.

GymsportsCarlene Smith has been very busy during her holidays as she competed in two Rhythmic Gymnastics events with great results. The first event was in the Waikato, Carlene came 1st in Ribbon, 2nd in Hoop and 3rd in Clubs with an overall placing of 2nd place along with the current National Champion.

The second event was the Midlands Champs where she came 2nd for Rope, Hoop, Clubs and Ribbon and therefore placing 2nd overall.

That is not all! Carlene is off to the New Zealand Secondary Schools event this weekend which will be a good challenge for her and we wish her all the best!

Basketball U15 BoysWe are steadily drawing nearer to the finals with the boys returning from the 2 week holiday break. Their eagerness was showing on court, with fumbling of the ball and minor errors until they settled down and got into sync.

Waiuku Mixed has definitely stepped up their game since Rosehill played them last, showing no mercy for the undefeated team. But true to form our boys regrouped and revised their game play and showed complete domination in the second half, leading to once again being undefeated.

Rosehill 35 – 19 Waiuku Mixed
