From the PrincipalDear members of the Sacred Heart College community

Sacred Heart College FoundationThe College Foundation was established in 1989 and has assisted with numerous capital projects, a range of bursaries and held several friend-raising events across the last three decades.

Typically, former students and families who are able have generously supported the Foundation, either in kind or by their presence at various events. For them, it has been a means by which to acknowledge the benefits and opportunities provided to them by a Sacred Heart education. Their support, in turn, helps the current and future families of our fine College.

At the end of this month is one of these friend-raising functions. Following is Rob McKay’s invitation to the Broader community.

With thanks for your support.

From the Head of Champagnat CampusVisible Learning Our Leaders of Learning embraced the opportunity to delve further into the Visible Learning project last Friday, as we gathered to review data and set priorities for our first VL action cycle. The gathering saw Marymount and Middle School leaders working in a spirit of openness and critical reflection, sharing their experiences, ideas and expertise with one another. It was exciting to witness. I am very grateful for the work of our leaders and acknowledge their commitment to Visible Learning.

Parent ForumFamilies gathered in intimate numbers last week for our Term 2 Parent Forum. Here, members of the Executive Team spoke about the different components of our preparations and support structures that have been put in place. Images of the new buildings were displayed as we shared in our excitement for their arrival. Practical matters such as buses, camps and our student transition program were also discussed. Parents left feeling informed and reassured that we are making the appropriate preparations. A summary of the topics covered can be accessed here.

Reconciliation WeekOver the last week, along with the Nation, we have had the opportunity to stop and reflect on what Reconciliation commemorates. Led by our SHAKARE, YEP and MLG groups, we joined together for a special Marymount assembly. The gathering enabled us to learn more about our history and consider how each of us can help build a future of hope and unity.

ExcursionsOver the past fortnight many of our learners have ventured off-site for curriculum enrichment excursions. Year 7s made their way to the Law Courts to further explore the judicial system, while our Year 9 Food classes travelled to Regency TAFE to learn more about the hospitality industry. In addition, our Business & Economics students investigated the Marion Shopping Centre, talking to business owners about profit, loss and marketing. Furthermore, a number of learners also represented Marymount at the Young Women in Technology workshop, held at the University of Adelaide. Here learners heard from a variety of guest speakers and female leaders in the technology field and participated in a range of hands-on activities. Finally, our Year 9 learners experienced a highly engaging and interactive Shakespeare play as part of their English curriculum.

Report DistributionDue to our Student Transition Day, Marymount Reports will be distributed during afternoon Home Group (3.10pm) on Thursday 28 June.

Support for your daughter’s wellbeingThe turbulent teens can be a difficult time for some students. At Marymount we have support structures in place to assist your daughter should the need arise.

If you have a concern about your daughter’s wellbeing the first contact is the homeroom teacher. If necessary they will then involve the year level Leader of Learning and Wellbeing:

Year 6 Sharon Bentley [email protected] Year 7 Anna Baronian [email protected] Year 8 Connie Trimboli [email protected] Year 9 Shauna Jenkinson [email protected]

If the matter requires more intervention it will be referred to the Director of Students, Liz Stewart [email protected]

There are two counsellors, which means there is counsellor support on campus everyday:

Lyn Heuzenroder [email protected] Kelly Pritchard [email protected]

From the Assistant to the Principal - Champagnat ProjectLast week we held our termly Champagnat Parent Forum and provided families with some brief updates about different aspects currently being developed in preparation for Champagnat Campus 2019. With just over 24 Working Parties meeting on a regular basis, there is certainly much happening across our existing Marymount and Middle School Campuses! I wish to acknowledge the work of the Champagant Senior Leadership Team and the many staff who are leading and contributing to the different groups.

Bus UpdateOperations Manager, Peter McCabe, gave an update of the plans to secure a Bus between Somerton Park and Mitchell Park. We are in discussion with Adelaide Coachlines and are proposing two buses each morning and afternoon both ways from Somerton Park to Mitchell Park. The route will be direct, down Oaklands and Daws Road, with two proposed stops along the way (either side of the road in the vicinity of the dog park and near the skate park next to the Warradale Army Barracks). The number of users will determine the size and number of buses and as a result, we will survey parents during Term 3 to establish demand for the service. While the cost is yet to be determined, other schools typically charge $5 to $6 per day, but given the distance we are hopeful the amount to be less.

Student TransitionThe Student Transition Working Party has been planning future events to support learners to build cross campus relationships, create House identity and build connections with educators from both campuses. We are planning one transition experience per term, with the first to be held on the last day of Term 2. Learners will separate into year levels for transition days and will then break up into small House based groups. Activities for each term will focus on the following themes:

Term 2 - Relationships Term 3 - Positive Education & Formation Term 4 - Site Orientation

More information will provided to families in the coming week outlining details for the end of Term 2 Transition Day.

CampsWe shared with families the themes and proposed venues for our Year Level camps for 2019 and beyond and outlined that Canberra will not feature in the Camp structure into the future.

Year 7 - Transition and Relationship Building (Wallaroo & Victor Harbor) Year 8 - Outdoor Ed/Aquatics (Hindmarsh Island) Year 9 - Rite Journey Camp (various sections of the Heysen Trail)

We recognise however, that many learners may have been anticipating a Canberra trip in 2019 and therefore we are proposing an optional trip to Canberra for 2019 only. The trip will be outside of the normal camp structure and will be an additional expense for those who choose to attend. We are currently establishing costings, but are anticipating the cost per student to be around $1000. Early next term we will send out expressions of interest to our 2019 Year 7 families to establish numbers interested in the optional Canberra trip.

As we move towards the end of Term 2 we are looking forward to our Professional Learning Week in Week 10 where staff from Marymount and Middle School will come together for further learning in the areas of Positive Education and Visible Learning.

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of Senior SchoolAnother two weeks has flown by...

Reconciliation AssemblyLast Wednesday the Senior School Campus assembly was held in honour of National Reconciliation Week and observed National Sorry Day (held nationally on 26 May). The theme for this year’s Reconciliation Week was Don’t Keep History A Mystery: Learn, Share, Grow.

Our special guest, John Lochowiak, opened proceedings with a Welcome To Country and Smoking Ceremony. John spoke of the importance of knowing our Nation’s history, which strongly connected to Steve Byrne’s address to students. Both reinforced the importance of acknowledging the dark times within our collective history in order to help heal the wrongs of the past and called for action to create a present and a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are given the recognition they deserve as our First Nations people.

Stage 1 and 2 Aboriginal Studies students shared their Semester 1 learning about the Aboriginal resistance fighter Jandamarra, the history behind the date January 26 and their cultural experiences. They also introduced us to some Aboriginal people doing amazing things in the community.

To mark National Sorry Day, non-Aboriginal students and staff exchanged handmade tokens with Aboriginal students thus symbolising our collective commitment to Reconciliation. John cleansed and blessed this relationship. The assembly concluded with a video documenting the journey the Sacred Heart community is on to promote Reconciliation, not only at school, but in the wider community.

Extended Library HoursAs mentioned in the last Hearts Newsletter, the Library is open until from 5.00pm - 8.00pm each Wednesday evening for Year 12 students. The ‘Grand Opening’ was held on Wednesday 30 May, where 22 Year 12 students used the extended facilities. A reminder that John Kelly and Pat Fooks are supervising, while Tom Downey (Old Scholar 2017) is providing tutoring for mathematics subjects. Year 12 students are encouraged to use this wonderful opportunity for focussed study and should plan ahead by returning their permission forms to Pat Fooks (Librarian).

Road Awareness Program (RAP) PresentationYesterday, all Year 11 students attended the annual RAP presentation. RAP is a powerful, hard-hitting road safety presentation delivered by firefighters to both young and experienced drivers across South Australia and interstate. Designed to give an open and honest insight into the experience of firefighters working in road crash rescue, RAP seeks to actively engage and empower drivers and other road users through positive peer pressure and its core message “You get to choose the risk; but you don’t get to choose the consequences”. During the 100 minute presentation, our students were given a confronting and realistic insight into road crash trauma including vision of real crashes and crash survivors. Kim, a man living with loss of his entire family (his wife and two young daughters, as well as a young friend of his daughter), shared his story as part of the presentation. Our students found this element of the presentation the most emotional and it is hoped that they will draw inspiration from the crash survivors’ resilience and strength. Our Year 11 students have learned that road safety is their responsibility and have been provided with a clear understanding of the consequences of choices on the road.

MusicalRehearsals have recently commenced for the upcoming Musical Annie which will be held in Week 7 of Term 3 (commencing 3 September). Tickets will be on sale from early Term 3 and further information will be distributed via this Newsletter.

Senior Dance Night PerformanceLast night was the Senior Dance Night Performance. The Year 10, Stage 1 and Stage 2 Dancers presented their class dances, as well as some student choreographies and short Dance films. Congratulations to all students involved and a special thank you to Dance teacher, Louise Durrans.

Entrepreneur Program - Final PresentationsThe final presentations from our Entrepreneur Program students were held on Monday 4 June. Congratulations to the 13 Year 11 and Year 12 students who presented their 10 minute summary of their business plans to their peers, TAFE lecturer Gaye Northcott and her colleague Emma O’Donoghue (TAFE Course Coordinator). This is an outstanding result for these students who will earn 50 Stage 2 credits for the successful completion of this Cert III course.

Daniel Cagney Camp Counselors USA (CCUSA) AwardOn Tuesday 10 April, I had the pleasure of presenting the Daniel Cagney CCUSA Camp Counselors USA (CCUSA) Award to Ellie van der Jeugd (Old Scholar 2017). The Daniel Cagney CCUSA Camp Counselors USA (CCUSA) Award is given in memory of Daniel Cagney - past student at SHC and participant in the Camp Counselors USA program. CCUSA offers the award every year in recognition of Daniel’s outstanding commitment to youth through his work as an American Camp Counselor. Year 12 students are eligible to win this Award by applying and being accepted to the CCUSA Camp Counselors USA program for the following year. The Award winner is drawn from a list of qualified applicants at the Formal Friday - Suit Up event which is run by Daniel’s family in conjunction with Beyondblue. The winner receives a $250 reimbursement from the Camp Counselors USA program and has the honour of continuing Daniel’s legacy of his commitment to children at summer camps in the USA. Ellie van der Jeugd will be attending the Kenmont Kenwood Camp in 2018.
