From the Principal
Last week we learned of the death of Br Bill Greening who
was Principal of the College from 1968 to 1973, the first
Principal on the new Bundoora site. His funeral took place
on Monday in Sydney, where he returned to after his time at
Parade. A fuller account of his life and ministry is included in
this Newsletter. We held a Eucharistic celebration last
Friday morning in his memory, which was attended by a
good number of Old Paradians from the era. May he rest in
peace.
We have now completed the examinations and assessments
for the first semester and reports will be available
electronically from this Thursday. I hope parents will discuss
the reports with their sons, both to commend their successes
and to ensure that some strategies are developed in
response to weaker areas.
There will be an opportunity for progress reviews for VCE
and VCAL (Years 10 to 12) students and parents on
Thursday 20 July from 4.00pm to 9.00pm. Bookings can be
made on line in the usual way.
This is the final Newsletter for the term. Classes resume for
Term 3 on Monday 17 July. We wish all our students a safe
and relaxing winter break.

Vale Br Greening, Bundoora’s First Principal
Br Bill Greening, Parade College Bundoora’s Principal in its
historic inaugural year of 1968, has died in Sydney five days
after his 90th birthday.
Br Greening died in Lewisham Hospital on Sunday morning
(18 June). Though he had been in ill health for some time,
Br Tim Barnes, himself an Old Paradian, was a constant
source of care and support.
News of Br Greening’s passing was conveyed by Gary
Henshall (1971) who, with fellow members of his final year
class, had kept in regular contact with a “courteous, fair and
consultative man” who oversaw the operations of the “new”
Parade.
“Br Bill worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between those
from East Melbourne and Alphington into the new settings.
After all, we were in the middle of nowhere,” Gary said.
“He truly was one of the good ones [and] he was in many
ways ahead of his time.
“He suggested in the 1971 Annual Report that maybe young
men were leaving school to enter a probable corrupt society
and he was concerned of the consequences.
“With Br Bill you got a religious man who loved music, who
respected his students and treated them as young men. He
tried to prepare them for the next step.
He listened, he consulted, he cajoled them, he heard and he
decided, fairly. If he felt there was bias or overuse of
authority by other staff members he was willing to listen to
students and parent’s points of view and intervene.”
Gary added that Br Greening not only enjoyed teaching
students in the classroom but also found time to coach on
the sports field – and who can forget that baggy tracksuit he
wore as he trained potential hurdlers”.
On what was the 100th anniversary of the educational
complex set in motion by the pioneers in 1868, Br Greening,
a Senior English Master for one year at the “Old Bluestone
Pile” and later Supervisor of teaching staffs of the Christian
Brothers, was appointed to oversee the running of the
fledgling Bundoora campus, formally opened by the then
Governor of Victoria Sir Rohan Delacombe on Sunday, 4
February, 1968.
Eighteen teachers - thirteen of them Brothers, including Vice
Principal Br Edwards and Senior Master Br Moloney,
together with laymen like Neville Colvin, Len Foster, Martin
Hickey, Alban Pisani and the Old Paradian Spence Williams
- officiated in that year, along with six assistant teachers.
In his annual report for the 1968 edition of The Paradian, Br
Greening reflected on the monumental move to Bundoora.
“A hundred years on, the magnificent project at Bundoora
appears to be somewhat spectacular and venturesome;
nevertheless it is completely consistent with the spirit of
Brother Treacy and his fellow pioneers,” he wrote.
“In so many ways the new college is in direct line with the
old; the dedicated staff, boys with similar social
backgrounds to the boys of yesteryear, highly academic
courses of study, sound spiritual formation, emphasis on
self-discipline, and so on.
Honour rolls and photographic records dating back to 1871
blend beautifully into a building which, by a triumph of
architecture, bridges the time barrier between past and
present-future.
In other words, a conscious effort has been made by the Old
Paradian design team and by the principals of the college to
uphold the motto: tenete traditiones as shown by the history
of the college.”
By way of Matthew Williams, who profiled the lives of a
number of Christian Brothers who profoundly impacted on
the education system in Australia, Br Greening’s story is as
follows;
William Greening was born on 13 June, 1927, the youngest
of four sons to Albert John Greening and Iona Gabriel (nee
Hall) in Newcastle, New South Wales.
Bill gained an early education at the Sisters of St Joseph at
Granville in Sydney and then CBC Burwood where he
completed his Intermediate Certificate in 1941.
He briefly attended CBC Lewisham before entering the
Juniorate at Strathfield in 1942 where he completed his
Leaving Certificate.
Bill received the Habit on 11 February 1944, and
commenced his novitiate year. Such was his promise shown
that he was relocated to Melbourne to teach at CBC
Yarraville (St Augustine’s) while still in his Scholasticate
year in 1945.
Whilst at Yarraville he taught primary and secondary
classes until the end of 1953, by which time he had also
completed his B.A. at the University of Melbourne.
A five-year period to 1958 found Br Greening at Rostrevor
College in Adelaide where he served as Boarding House
Master and also Senior Humanities Master. His versatility
was further demonstrated through his roles as OC of
Cadets, sports-master and choirmaster.
Transferred to the Brothers Victorian Juniorate in Bundoora
in 1959, Br Greening taught classics, humanities and music,
and from 1963 to 1966 also served as Juniorate Director. As
such, he created a less stuffy and rigid atmosphere for his
young charges than had been customary.
In 1968, having completed a year as Educational Supervisor
for the St Patrick’s (Southern) Province, Br Greening was
appointed Principal of Parade College. As Principal of the
new Bundoora campus for what would be a six-year term,
he fostered the various abilities of his staff and allowed them
to be innovative.
In chronicling Br Greening’s life for a series of stories
involving Brothers who have had influence on the education
system in Australia, Matthew Williams explained that the
man’s artistic talents were put to good use at Parade.
“Br Greening himself was outstanding as an English teacher
where not only his knowledge but also his acting abilities
and feel for the dramatic arts enabled him to bring literature
to life for his students,” Matthew noted. “He (also) found
time to complete a B.Ed. with first class honours, winning
the Harold Cohen Prize in Education”.
In 1974, Br Greening transferred to the New South Wales St
Mary’s Province, assuming the role of Deputy Principal of St
Patrick’s Strathfield and the following year Principal until
1980.
During this time, he commenced work on his Masters of
Education thesis dealing with the first mission of the
Christian Brothers to Sydney from 1843 to 1847.
He was awarded his Masters with honours in 1981 allowing
him to commence doctorate studies. He gained his Ph.D for
his thesis on the adaptation of the Irish Christian Brothers
educational system to Australian conditions in the 19th
Century.
During the 1980s, after some study leave at Vaughan
College, Marsfield, Br Greening joined the staff of Mountt St
Mary’s Strathfield Teachers’ College - firstly as a part-time
lecturer in sociology, educational psychology and the
History and Philosophy of Education, and later as Campus
Director.
These were exciting times as the Teachers’ College was
expanding considerably and had a reputation for producing
fine young exponents of the teaching craft. Ultimately the
college developed into a campus of the Australian Catholic
University.
In 1992, Br Greening accepted an invitation to Notre Dame
University in Fremantle as rector to the American students,
during which time he also briefly acted as registrar.
Back in Sydney in the mid-1990s, Br Greening worked as
Province archivist and also secretary to the Province’s
Edmund Rice Beatification Committee.
From 1995 until 2003, Br Greening resided at Waterford
House at Waverley in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, while he
assisted the Principal and the College in various capacities -
chiefly representing the Principal at meetings of the Old
Boys Association but also as a Board member and Archivist.
He retired to Edmund House at the Charingfield Hostel in
2004.
“Bill has been active in many educational circles, and served
on many committees over the years too many to name here,
Matthew noted.
“Many of them reflect his interest in the teaching of English;
he was for instance made an honorary life-member of the
2013 Br Greening at Lewisham
playing his mandolin
Victorian Association for the teaching of English. School
leadership has been another area of interest for he has
served as a member of the Executive of the NSW
Association for Independent Schools and as a member of
the National Standing Committee for School Evaluation, to
name just two of several such committees.
“Bill, with his gregarious personality, friendliness and sense
of hospitality have enabled him to be at ease in society and
professional circles. He has always been someone who
enjoys the big occasion. Many of his activities and interest
have been curtailed in recent years by poor health but his
geniality was still evident.”

Semester One Reports
Throughout the term students are given ongoing feedback on their learning. The end of Semester Reports provide an overview of
your son’s academic progress. These semester reports, alongside the March Parent/Teacher Interviews and Interim Reports, form
part of the formal process of reporting on student progress throughout the first half of the school year.
Semester Reports will be released online via the Parent Portal on Thursday 29 June at 3.30pm (Year 9 ExCEL will be available on
Friday 28 July). Reports from Years 7 to 10 comply with the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum and consequently include
details on achievement and strategies for improvement. I am confident that the Semester Reports will offer a clear and concise
overview of your son’s achievements, effort and progress. They can also form the basis for further improvements in Semester Two.

your bookings, so attending the interviews is straight forward for you.
Pay attention to the prefix/first letter:
‘G’ with a number means the interview is in the Greening Auditorium at Bundoora Campus
‘M’ with a number means the interview is in the Mackillop Centre at the Preston Campus
Semester Two Timetables
Students have begun their second semester timetables. At Parade, our timetable is focused on students, not teachers. When our
boys make their elective choices, we maximise their choices and build the timetable around them. This means that at the end of a
Semester, students change their electives and to accommodate these changes there are many boys who also have a change for
some of their year long (two Semester subjects). Teachers will assist students in making this transition, and as students progress
through the school, they will find as they can choose electives more and more, this change becomes more common.
All students are encouraged to take time during the upcoming semester break to have a rest in preparation for the new term and to
celebrate all that they have achieved. Senior students will have homework and study tasks to focus on that help them to appreciate
the times of rest all the more.
2018 Subject Selection Information
The process for choosing subjects for elective units in 2018 begins with Year level assemblies to students in Years 7, 8 and 11 on
Friday 28 July. Year 9 and 10 students and families will receive important subject selection information on the afternoon and
evening of Thursday 3 August.
Please note the following key dates:
August 3 Compulsory Subject Selection Information evening for Year 9 (2017) into 10 (2018) and Year 10 (2017)
into 11 (2018).
The information will be presented on two occasions. Current Year 9 & 10 families should select one
session to attend.
Year 9 students who have indicated their preference for the Edmund Rice Pathways Program (ERPP) in

Immunisations Information - Year 7
Year 7 students at the Bundoora Campus will be having their
HPV2 and Chicken Pox immunisation on Wednesday 28
June.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Meningococcal ACWY
Secondary School Vaccine Program
The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines
to help make sure students and communities are protected
from diseases. The Minister for Health announced the
Meningococcal ACWY Program for all Year 10, 11 and 12
students would be made available in 2017.
Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal disease.
Although uncommon, it can become life-threatening, very
quickly. There are different strains of meningococcal bacteria
known by letters of the alphabet, including meningococcal A,
B, C, W and Y. In recent years, the meningococcal W strain
has increased across Australia, with Victoria experiencing
eleven cases to date in 2017 and forty-eight cases in 2016,
compared to seventeen cases in 2015, four in 2014 and one
in 2013. It is now the predominant strain in Victoria.
Immunisations will be held on the following dates
Preston Campus 25 July
Bundoora Campus 8 August
The College distributed consent cards to all Year 10, 11 and
12 students last week via their Tutor Group Leader. Your son
should have brought home an immunisation consent card for
you to sign and return to their Tutor Teacher before 30 June.
Please note, if you do not want your son to have this
immunisation, the card still needs to be ticked NO, signed and
returned to school.
All consent cards must be returned to the College no later
than 30 June in order for them to be returned to the Council to
order Vaccines.
Enquiries and for vaccinations outside the school period
parents should contact their local Council directly.
Every day vaccination saves lives and makes it possible for
Victorians to live free from the illness and disability caused
by many infectious diseases. All Year 10, 11 and 12
Victorian secondary students can receive this vaccine for
free.

Using mobile phones during the school day
Students are reminded that mobile phones should be stored
in their lockers between 8.35am and 3.15pm.
Some students have been contacting their parents/guardians
directly and making arrangements to be picked up if they are
sick or injured during school hours.
If your son is not well can you please remind him that he
must attend the First Aid office where he will be assessed
and a decision made as to whether to contact a parent/
guardian and for the student to be picked up or returned to
class.
This is correct procedure and does ensure that your son is
cared for in the most appropriate way.
CareMonkey – The Health Care System at the
College
CareMonkey is an innovative parent controlled electronic
medical form for schools that have a duty of care
responsibility. It is an electronic version of the paper based
forms that you have previously been required to fill in for
excursions and camps etc. It also provides parents with the
opportunity to update medical information promptly and
accurately while providing the school with instant access to
the emergency information provided by you. All excursion
permission letters will then be emailed to parents/guardians
using this system. You will be able to grant approval for your
son to attend these activities. All students participating in
activities off the college premises must have an accurate and
live CareMonkey profile and must have provided written
consent on the authorised permission form prior to attending.
Parents are reminded to update their CareMonkey profile as
soon as information changes with your son. Please ensure
that the email address linked to the account is your regular
address and the easiest one for you to receive
communications.

From the Director of Ministry
It so happened that when I heard of the death of Br Bill
Greening (see Tony De Bolfo’s obituary in this edition), I had
just read the Mass Readings for the day, and had planned
to write a short reflection on those readings for this College
Newsletter. However, after reading Br Bill’s obituary they
took on a new significance – they seemed providential. This
is the opening sentence from the First Reading:
Do not forget: thin sowing means thin reaping; the
more you sow, the more you reap. Each one should
give what he has decided in his own mind, not
grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a
cheerful giver. And there is no limit to the blessings
which God can send you – he will make sure that you
will always have all you need for yourselves in every
possible circumstance, and still have something to
spare for all sorts of good works. As scripture says:
He was free in almsgiving, and gave to the poor: his
good deeds will never be forgotten. (2 Corinthians
9:6-7)
Then the Psalm says of the upright person: “He is a light in
the darkness for the upright: he is generous, merciful and
just … Open-handed, he gives to the poor; his justice stands
firm for ever. His head will be raised in glory.” (Psalm 111)
But the Gospel contains a warning for the person who gives
to others:
“Be careful not to parade your good deeds before
men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose
all reward from your Father in heaven. So when you
give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this
is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in
the streets to win men’s admiration. I tell you
solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you
give alms, your left hand must not know what your
right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and
your Father who sees all that is done in secret will
reward you.” (Matthew 6:1-3)
When you read Br Bill’s obituary, it is clear that he was a
man of passion and vision, a man who invested himself
wholeheartedly in whatever apostolate he was asked to lead.
Something of his generosity of spirit shines through. His life
is a testament to the difference one person can make.
I believe profoundly that every effort any person makes to
fashion a better future and a more whole and sustainable
world, makes a profound difference – even if that difference
cannot be seen or measured. I am thinking of all those
people (students and staff) who have donated a pyjamas, or
a toothbrush, or a packet of colouring pencils to Digby
Morrell’s drive for Eddie’s Backpacks; or, those who will
donate a coat to Anne-Marie Morello’s Winter Coat Appeal
from St Vinnies; or, those who will buy an extra pair of socks
for Kylie Kuppe’s drive for the homeless.
All these efforts make a profound difference – in fact, they
transform our world. It was Bernard of Chartres who said,
“we are like dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants, so
that we can see more than they”. We have giants like Br Bill
Greening to thank for our identity and spirit at Parade – a
spirit of justice, of service and of giving to those in need. So,
let us continue to give to all those who need our help.
Just remember, “God loves the cheerful giver”!

Eddie’s Backpacks
In 2017 over 3500 children will be placed in foster care for a
number of reasons. Most importantly, not one of these
reasons is due to anything they have done. Imagine if one
(or a number) of your children had to encounter any of these
challenges:
Go into a house to live with complete strangers
Trust in people you know nothing about
Live with the constant threat of being ‘moved on’ to a
new family – new strangers
This is what foster kids face day to day. How can I, how can
we, how can all of us make that time calmer and more
reassuring?
THIS IS HOW! Twenty Parade boys have stood up to
make a change. They are putting together backpacks for
children who go into a new foster care environment, filled
with goodies that will go some way to helping them
transition into a new house – and, hopefully, new home.
We have worked closely with foster carers and foster kids to
put these packs together. We are aiming high! We are
trying to fill 600 backpacks before the end of September.
I must say what a wonderful amount of support we have
received so far from within the Parade community and from
external people to our school. Thank you!
Our packs are coming together well but we are still chasing
support in the following areas (0-16 years of age):
Nightlights, teddy bears and small toys (matchbox
cars, barbies, any little toy for ages 0-6)
Playing cards, small games, Rubics cubes, etc
Small AM/FM radios/gadgets
Finger spinners
Down balls
Maybe over these school holidays when you are out
shopping you could throw in a ‘something extra’ for Eddie’s
Backpacks

Community Action Report
The cold weather has not dampened spirits in the
Community Action Centre and we are seeing higher
numbers of students involved in our programs.
The Junior Committee has begun the annual ‘Winter Coat’
Collection (see advertisement) and plans are in the works
for Term 3 initiatives.
The Waterford Garden is flourishing under the care of
Andrew Walker and his working crew of Year 7 and 8
students.
It is a mini oasis in the middle of the Bundoora grounds,
where chickens can be found scratching away at the soil,
snow peas are climbing their stakes and green thumbs are
at work!
We encourage any student who may be interested in
assisting at lunchtimes to see Mr Walker.
Eddy’s Brekky Van has regular student volunteers each
week and we have seen an increase in patronage on a
Tuesday morning at Olympic Village.
We invite our Parade Community to volunteer and be part of
the Brekky Van program on a Tuesday morning. We also
are very appreciative of any donations of fruit, bread, sweets
and sausages for the breakfast. Contact me either by
calling the College on 9688-3300 or via email anne-
[email protected] if you are able to assist.
A number of our Year 9 Students have recently been
involved in the St Alban’s Tutoring program and they have
formed some positive relationships with the primary school
students that attend.
The June Greensborough Community Lunch saw five of our
students give up their school free day to volunteer, and I
received a lovely email form the Coordinator, Moira Wilkins,
praising the students for their efforts.
“As the coordinators of the community meal at All Saint’s
Church yesterday, Colin and I wanted to express our delight
about the group of Parade students who volunteered their
own time to come and help us. Kam, Anthony, Allen,
Valentino and Christian were extremely polite, amiable,
eager to work and they kept up with the pace of events very
well.
The fact that they gave up their day off to help us and with
so much enthusiasm is a credit to them and a reflection of
the ethos your school community obviously makes a great
effort to develop in them” Moira Wilkins.
One Students Experience at the Community
Lunch
As a member of the Community Action team, I found this
experience one to remember. The day started off by setting
up the free grocery donation for the local families in need.
We put our culinary skills to the test by helping to prepare
the lunch.
My favourite part of the day was serving the meals and
meeting the many colorful guests that arrived. I highly
recommend this experience to any Year 11’s looking to fulfill
“Service Learning hours”.

Parade Careers Website
http://www.paradecollegecareers.com.au
The Parade Careers website has a myriad of useful
information. You can access using the link above or through
the school’s portal. One important source of up to date
information is the Newsletter section (Important Info >
Careers Newsletter). In this week’s newsletter information
about all the Law courses available in Victoria is in one table.
In last weeks it was a table of information about Engineering.
Many others are available in the newsletter titled Course
Matrix.
3 August – Careers and Subject Selection Expo
All students in Years 12, 11 and 10 are expected to attend
the Expo on 3 August. The Subject Selection evening is
important for students to get an opportunity to speak with all
the tertiary providers as well as faculty leaders in relation to
subjects. Year 12 students should attend immediately after
school and Year 10 and 11 students will be able to access
the expo before and after their information sessions.
Year 12 – Program Term 3
Year 12 will be in their final semester and so look out for the
VTAC briefing session that will tell you all you need to know
about applying for courses in Victoria. We will also talk
about interstate and international applications. The list of
things Year 12 students should be attentive to include the
following:
Attending Open Days in August. These happen most
Sundays and are very important.
Beginning your VTAC application. Sessions will be
run in tutor groups and Year 12 meetings.
Applying for scholarships. These are awarded to a
wide range of students, not just high achievers.
Applying for SEAS. It is important to become aware of
what circumstances may give a score bonus.
Attend at least 1 interview with Ms. Harvey or Mr
Delahunty
All Year 11 students should see the Career Advisors in
relation to their subject selection. We can help in a number
of ways, but most importantly in relation to prerequisite
subjects for tertiary courses.
Year 10 – Program Term 3
The subject selection night on 3 August is important for all
Year 10 students as you get an opportunity to speak with
all the tertiary providers as well as faculty. The information
session will clarify much of what you need to know about
the requirements of VCE and VCAL.
Work Experience is getting closer. Careers Class teachers
have a copy of the names of some previous employers. If
you have not yet found work experience please talk to your
Careers Teacher. Forms must be in before the end of
Term 3.
Year 9 – Program Term 3
The ExCEL program takes on a Career focus in Term 3
with students visiting universities and TAFE’s to get a bit of
an understanding about study and training after secondary
school. We are also trialling a program called TRIPOD
with one group. This exciting program will build team work
and entrepreneurial skills.

Senior Rugby Union
The Parade Senior Rugby Union team compete in the
Annual Rugby Union Gala Day, organised by the Melbourne
Rebels and played at Albert Park on Wednesday 21 June.
A team of fifteen students of varied rugby experience took to
the field against a number of seasoned rugby teams. Whilst
the Parade team received a ‘walkover’ in Round 1, two solid
wins against Kurunjung and St Albans in the following
encounters resulted in Parade winning our ‘pool’ and a spot
in the semi-finals.
Although the team continued to play well, Parade were
defeated by Sunshine College in the semi-final; however,
the boys rallied to defeat the strong Keysborough College
team in the ‘play-off’ for third.
Congratulations to all students on the manner in which they
played the game.
Whilst the competition was ferocious throughout the entire
day, it was a delight to witness the level of respect for fellow
competitors and officials from all teams.
Finally, I’d like to thank Mr Adrian Grace for coaching and
guiding the boys at training and in competition.
Victorian All Schools State Cross Country
The Victorian All Schools State Cross Country was held on
Saturday 17 June at Bundoora Park. Congratulations to two
Parade students, William Dynes Yr 9 T18, who finished 46th
of 109 runners in the U/16 4 kilometre event, and William
Conlon Yr 10 H02 who placed 29th of 79 athletes in the U/17
6 kilometre run.

further details.
Term 2 Sport Photos
The Parade ACC Sports Team photos for Term 2 sports will
be developed from the students’ individual portrait photo
taken at the beginning of the year.

specific team are truly acknowledged, students are asked to
check team lists which are posted on the Sports
Noticeboard above the Senior Canteen (Bundoora Campus)
and on the Sports Noticeboard (Preston Campus).
If a student represented a team, but their name is not
included on the team list, then they must see Mr Gaut
(Bundoora) or Mr Watson (Preston) by Friday 30 June.
Teams posted are as follows –

will be held on Thursday 3 August at the Frankston
Australian Clay Target Club, Carrum Downs.
This competition is open to students from Years 7 to 12 who
have a current Firearms Licence and have their own firearm.

Parade Student to Represent Victoria
Congratulations to Year 9 student, Ben Major (L17), who
has been selected to represent Victoria in the U/15
Australian AFL Schoolboys Championships which are being
held in Perth and Mandurah between 22 and 29 July.
This is an outstanding achievement by Ben who also
represented Victoria in the same team in 2016 as an
underage player.

Term 2 ACC Sports Wrap
The Grand Final’s for both football and soccer have now
been played with some mixed results.
On Tuesday 13 June our Year 10 soccer team travelled to
Mazenod College for the Grand Final. In a closely fought
contest, the boys tried hard but were no match for Mazenod
going down three goals to one. In the football, it was our
combined Year 9 and 10 team who took on Emmanuel
College at the Garvey Oval. The team got off to a flyer,
leading by five goals early before Emmanuel worked their
way back into the game. The game remained close until half
time before our boys piled on the goals to eventually run out
eleven goal winners. A great effort!
Year 9/10 Football Premiers
On the following Thursday 15 June, both the Year 7A and
7B teams were playing away Grand Finals. The A’s were
playing at Salesian College and the B’s at St Bernard’s
College.
In the A game, both sides scored early and the match lived
up to expectations in a very standard contest. It wasn’t until
after half-time where the Parade boys were able to get on
top, eventually pulling away to run out six to two winners!
In the B’s it was a much closer contest. With scores locked
at one all and not long left in regular time, it would prove
heart-breaking for the boys as St Bernard’s managed to put
one in the net with minutes remaining. Well done to both
Year 7A Soccer Premiers
sides on representing the College proudly and passionately.
A great achievement and hopefully a sign of things to come.
And finally, our Year 9 football team would make the trek to
St Bede’s College Mentone for the Grand Final. The St
Bede’s trip has proven to be a challenging experience for
the students over time but this year we hoped to “buck the
trend”.
Kicking with a strong breeze in the first quarter, the boys
piled on five goals to one to hold a four goal lead at quarter
time. Not knowing the true effect of the breeze until half
time, our guys defended manfully throughout the second
quarter to maintain our lead at half-time. Despite losing
momentum slightly in the last quarter, the boys were
excellent across the four quarters to run out eighteen point
winners, making it back to back premierships for many of
these students.
Year 9 Football Premiers
Well done to all students who competed in both sports
throughout Term 2. We have approximately 400 students
represent the College in football whilst a further 220
represent us in soccer across both campuses. We now look
ahead to Term 3 sports with the hope building on the
success we achieved this term.
Term 3 Sport Update
As we close the door on another season of football and
soccer, our focus now shifts to our Term 3 sports and the
current status of those teams.
Our senior basketball and table tennis teams have
commenced training in preparation for the coming season.
Please see Mr Gaut or Mr Turner if you wish to know any
further information regarding these two sports. Our hockey
team has a practice match on the Wednesday of the last
week of term, if you wish to play you need to speak with Mr
Bowie.
Our Year 9 and 10 teams will commence their training/trials
during their High Performance classes. The training is only
open to students who currently have High Performance on
their Term 3 timetable or you are a student on the Preston
Campus.
The Year 8 trials/training for the coming Term 3 sports will
commence in High Performance this week and like the Year
9 and 10 teams, is only available to those students listed as
High Performance students.
Finally, the Year 7 trials for all sports have been running
across this term with the view to have some of these squads
finalised before the holiday break as the season
commences for some teams in week 1.
Should there be any queries for students on the Bundoora
Campus regarding trials, trainings and team selection,
please see either Mr Gaut in E44 or Mr Turner in E45.

From The Old Paradians
OP’s McRohan and O’Meara awarded OAM’s
Two Old Paradians – Paul McCrohan (1963) and the
College Captain Michael O’Meara (1965) – have been
recognised for their achievements in the most recent
Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Mike (pictured top left) was recognised with an Order of
Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division for service to
veterans and their families, and to the community of Kilsyth
of which he is part. Paul (pictured bottom left) was similarly
awarded an OAM in the General Division for service to the
community through a range of roles.
Notwithstanding their wider contributions, both men have
been dedicated supporters of the Old Paradians cause, as
members of a sub-committee dedicated to the interests of
Old Paradians in active service – a sub-committee of which
David Stevens (1979) and long-serving former Parade
College teacher and Honorary Old Paradian John Joss are
part.
By way of that sub-committee, Paul and Mike assisted with
the planning of the 2014 Annual Dinner which
acknowledged all Old Paradians who served in conflict; and
continue to help convene yearly gatherings of the College’s
Vietnam veterans.
Mike, was also able to help the Association secure a grant
from the Department of Veterans Affairs to fund an Honor
Board, now hanging in the Hickey Foyer, which carries the
names of the 1078 Old Paradians known to have served
their country through the course of the Second World War.
Both Mike and Paul were unavailable for comment at the
time of publication, but the Old Paradians’ Association
wishes to extend its heartiest congratulations to them on
being so honoured with the OAM.

Old Paradian Dandies at Royal Ascot
Recently pictured at Royal Ascot are three men about town -
the Old Paradians Bill Gibbins (1963), Gerard Walsh (1973)
and Dale McCann (1979).
Gibbins, the recently retired transport tycoon, Walsh, the
corporate bookmaking highflyer, and McCann, the
Managing Director and founder of an aged and disability
organisation, made the flight from Melbourne to be part of
Great Britain’s most valuable race meeting, at which the
finest racehorses this year competed for more than
£6.58million in prizemoney.
Also in tow was the tuna king Tony Santic, owner of the
three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.
It’s fair to say that the normally modest McCann rather
enjoyed the opportunity to namedrop when reflecting on his
whirlwind visit to the famed horsey locale.
“I had a short chat with Tom Jones at the bar at The
Dorchester on the Sunday night after I arrived. Alas, no
photo,” Dale said. “As for Ascot, this was an amazing
experience, particularly due to the Queen’s arrival and the
minute’s silence in respect of the recent events in London.”
Dale noted that three course records were shattered on the
opening day “as these horses are absolutely the best in the
world”.
“And while the crowds may not be as large as those for the
Melbourne Spring Carnival, the atmosphere at Royal Ascot
was extraordinary.”
To top it off, Bill, Gerry and Dale all “backed a winner or two”
on day one (presumably to pay off the monkey suits) from
the comfort of an on-course corporate box. “We didn’t leave
the box either, as it was the hottest day in London for 40
years.”
40 Years On, Class of 77 Reconvenes
Thirty-five members of the final year class of 1977 recently
returned to Parade’s Bundoora Campus for what was a
boisterous 40-year reunion in the Hickey Foyer (and later
the Frank Mount Social Room).
Amongst them was the College Captain of that year, John
Dinan, who has also accepted an invitation to join the Old
Paradians’ Association committee.
One of three Old Paradians to take out Australia’s richest
footrace the Stawell Gift (in his instance, 1980), John took
time to reflect on his years at Parade
“Forty years ago is a long time ago . . . but we all had a
great time in ’77. The HSC was a very hard year, but we
achieved a lot,” John said.
“The memories that stay with me relate to the athletics
team, the football team and my studies, along with the
friends I continued with – and there’s quite a few of them.”
Recalling the long-gone lake and the since-demolished
library as part of the Bundoora backdrop he remembered,
John said that when he recently returned to the College’s
Open Day “I literally didn’t recognise the place, which made
me realise how small the school was back then”.
“Parade means a lot because it’s given me and the boys
here a lot. It’s part of our history, it’s the place that did the
right thing by us and gave us the right values to go on with,”
said John, pictured second from the left with old classmates
Tony Exton, John Murphy and Brendan Wing.
Sixteen apologies were accepted from former students,
including Peter Chisholm, now the Director and Chief
Operating Officer of Morgans Financial Limited in Brisbane.
In a message to old classmates, Peter wrote: “Getting a
note to attend a 40-year reunion kind of stops you in your
tracks - wow where did all that time go? I trust the night is a
success and not too rowdy - we were, from my memory at
the time, a fairly tough and unruly mob in 1977!”.
Those who attended the 1977 Reunion were: Peter
Beriman, Steven Berizzi, Mark Buttifant, Tony Casey, Brett
Chadwick, Ron Coon, Gerard Crockford, John Dinan, Tony
Exton, John Fleming, Paul Gleeson, Martin Grogan, Brian
Hamill, John Hempenstall, John Love, Dale McGough, Paul
Mitchell, John Murphy, Paul Neeson, Eric Norton, Tony
O’Neil, John Plowman, Mark Quinlan, Roger Rassool, John
Rayner, Ennio Rebellato, Alex Rossimel, Stephen Schmidt,
Gerard Schoofs, Fabian Tasca, Ken Thompson, Anthony
Treppo, Marcel Vanderslik, Robert Viney and Brendan
Wing.
A special mention to Stephen Schmidt, who completed a
1600-kilometre round trip from his home in Kambah, New
South Wales to be there on the night.
Perhaps John spoke for them all when he wrote in The
Paradian of the 1977: “The students of HSC ’77 are a credit
to the College. They have given excellent leadership to the
rest of the school, and kept the spirit of the school at its
highest level.
If the College takes this lead, then I am positive that
everyone will be happier and more at ease. I hope that the
lead is followed”.
