Year 12 Final Liturgy
On Thursday afternoon, 13 October, we held our final
liturgy for our 2016 Year 12 students. It was a special
occasion – one that struck exactly the right tone. It was
held during the last period of their last day of school. It
says so much about our Parade boys that their behaviour
was impeccable throughout the whole liturgy; they
participated attentively and joyfully.
We had three speakers who offered their thoughts and
advice to the boys. All of them offered a rich vision,
compelling stories and sage advice that every Year 12
student would do well to heed. Year 12 student Lachlan
Davine, H02, spoke of the close bonds of friendship and
togetherness that he hoped would continue long after he
leaves Parade. Ms Anne-Marie Morello encouraged the
boys to remain steadfast and resilient in times of difficulty
and to always be attentive to the needs of others,
particularly the poor and the marginalised. Through story
and anecdote, Mr Rob Peckham inspired the boys to
believe in the possibilities of life, to travel so that their
understanding of and compassion for others will be broken
open.
All this took place against the backdrop of prayer and
reflection. Each student lit a candle, not only to symbolise
the light they brought to Parade during their time here, but
also the light of Blessed Edmund Rice, the visionary who
made this possible.
It was left to Ms Regina Rowan, Assistant Principal -
Student Welfare, to round off the afternoon by thanking all
the boys for what they have meant to Parade and what
they have contributed during their time here.
The warm round of applause was ample evidence of their
esteem and deep appreciation not only for all the rich
farewell activities that Ms Rowan had organised in their
last days, but for her care for their wellbeing throughout
their whole time at Parade.
On my desk is a calendar with short reflections from Pope
Francis for each day of the year. Today’s reflection
seems particularly apt as a final message for our Year 12
boys as they venture out into the unknown:
“There are no difficulties, trials or misunderstandings to
fear, provided we remain united to God as branches to
the vine, provided we do not lose our friendship with him,
provided we make ever more room for him in our lives.
This is especially so whenever we feel poor, weak and
sinful, because God grants strength to our weakness,
riches to our poverty, conversion and forgiveness to our
sinfulness. The Lord is so rich in mercy: every time, if we
go to him, he forgives us. Let us trust in God’s work!
With him we can do great things; he will give us the joy of
being his disciples, his witnesses. Commit yourselves to
great ideals, to the most important things. We Christians
were not chosen by the Lord for little things; push
onwards toward the highest principles. Stake your lives
on noble ideals, my dear young people!” (Pope Francis,
Homily, St. Peter’s Square April 28, 2013)
We wish our Year 12 students every grace and blessing
as they leave us to live lives with “noble ideals” and “the
highest principles” – and do Blessed Edmund Rice proud.

Takada Reflection
My Name is Peter Samouris and I have returned from the
2016 Takada Junior and Senior High School Exchange
along with six fellow Parade College students.
Speaking on behalf of all the students I can say that our
time in Japan was one we will always remember.
Experiencing school as a student in Japan, and visiting
various shrines, temples and cities were all part of our
itinerary. During our free time our host families took us to
various places to experience Japanese culture and way of
life. Everyone that we met was always willing to make our
trip as memorable and enjoyable as it could be.
I would like to express
many thanks to all the
families that hosted us and
made our stay in Japan
memorable. They took us
in with open arms and
helped us integrate into a
new lifestyle. Although it
was different, by the end of
the first day it felt normal
as the families we stayed
with were so caring and
catered to our basic needs.
As a student studying Japanese using the language every
day of the trip helped me to further develop my language
skills, because in Australia I would only use it in the
classroom.
I would encourage students wanting to be part of the
Exchange program to take the opportunity next year and to
also host a student coming to Australia in March. I am
looking forward to making my hosts experience as
enjoyable as I can when they come to Australia

India Immersion 2016
In September, four boys embarked on Parade’s first
student immersion to India: Andre Stephen (Year 11,
L07) Eric Ear (Year 11, T09) Shaun Spiteri (Year 9, L14)
and Rohan Khanna (Year 9, L15). Accompanied by staff
members Mr Paul Watson, Ms Sayna Sadigi, and retired
Parade teacher Mr Kevin McMahon, they headed off for
what was an eye-opening and life changing experience.
The group spent one week in Kolkata visiting other
Edmund Rice schools, various local justice projects and
Mother Teresa’s house. The second week was in
Shillong, living and working at Providence School which
educates underprivileged children. The immersion ended
with a few days of sightseeing in Delhi, Varanasi and of
course a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Particular thanks to Dr Denis Moore who made this
immersion possible. Thank you too to Mrs Kylie Kuppe
who guided the participants in their preparation for the
immersion.

The India experience taught me that it’s easy to give a
few dollars to charity, but a person’s view can change
when they actually go and experience what their
donations actually go to. All of a sudden the person in
the background of a particular picture or film becomes a
person that you know and have worked with. They are
not just pictures and numbers but real people with real
dreams like us. You build a relationship with the people
you work with and it’s a great feeling.

Year 11, L07
At Providence School I made a special friend named
“Wilson”. He attached himself to me and we became
great friends. Wilson and the other kids at Providence
show so much gratitude that it prompted us to compare
what they have with what we have. It confronted us to
think about how much gratitude we show for all that we
have. So often we just take what we have for granted.
Getting to know the Providence kids and the experience
we had with them challenges us to change the way we
think, see and do things. It was an experience that will
certainly stay with me for the rest of my life as a positive
experience that changed me for the better.

From The Old Paradians
Friends pay tribute to Nathan with feeling
Nathan Jones’s brave battle with melanoma has ended
with his passing at the tender age of 41. But the Old
Paradian’s capacity to inspire prevails for those whose
great fortune it was to have known Nathan along the way.
Nathan completed his final year of schooling at Parade in
1993. Leighton (1994), Kalev (1998), Rhys (1999) and
Reardon (2003) all followed in his footsteps, with sister
Olivia a welcome inclusion to the band of brothers.
The College Captain of 1993 Kane Watson is amongst the
many former students who are the better for knowing
Nathan.
“The thing that stands out about Nathan’s time at Parade
was his athletic prowess. He was always a good middle
distance runner - 1500 and 1800 metres were his go - as
was cross country,” Kane said.
“I was quite close to him at school and he was a ripping
fella. He was concerned about others, he was always
interested in others getting the best out of themselves, and
it shone through in his later life.”
VCE Coordinator Paul Fahey, who taught Nathan at the
College, remembered Nathan as a truly active Parade
participant.
“Nathan was involved in everything through his time at
school,” Paul said. “He was a great fellow then and a
great fellow beyond his school days. If you bumped in to
him at the shops he was always up for a chat.”
Three years ago, Nathan, then a Grade 5 teacher at Carey
Grammar’s junior Donvale campus, went public to warn of
the potential dangers of exposure to the sun.
At that point Nathan was still coming to terms with his
condition, the result of being unprotected in the sun. As he
said to Shaun Campbell of Manningham Leader:
(image, Manningham Leader)
“You remember those times going to athletics as a 16-
year-old and not worrying about sunscreen or anything.
Looking back, I think it has cost me now.”
Regardless of the extremely physical hardships, Nathan
battled on - and as a husband to Lisa and father to three
girls Ariella, Kalita and Zahlia, he knew of the im-
portance of playing the percentages.
“My wife and I make sure our daughters have long
sleeves and sunscreen on the face when they go out,”
he said at the time.
“It does not matter what time it is in the day, you just
have to put it on.”
Nathan’s passing has elicited a tidal wave of emotion.
On Facebook, Leighton Jones posted the following:
A message to my brother Nathan. You put up a good
fight and now the pain is gone. You were so strong for
so long. You leave behind three beautiful girls who in
time will have the strength he had. A wife Lisa who is
one of the strongest people I know. Know this brother
your family will be looked after and your legacy will live
on trough them. Thank you for being a great older broth-
er to me, Kalev, Rhys, Reardon and Olivia. Uncle to
Flynn, Nate and Isla. We will miss you. It’s time to say
goodbye till we meet again.
Thanks to all for your support towards Nathan. As my
brother says hug your loved ones.
Love you brother.
John Wegner honoured at Government
House
Old Paradian John Wegner (1967) has been presented
with the Order of Australia at Sydney’s Government House
as an Officer in the General Division.
Now living in Enmore, John was so honoured for
distinguished service to the performing arts as a world
renowned operatic bass-baritone, and as an ambassador
for the cultural reputation of Australia.
John received his award – the highest ranked civilian
award presented on the day - from the Governor of New
South Wales His Excellency General The Honourable
David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d).
In an email to his friend and
Old Paradian committeeman
Phil Carter, John explained
that he and his wife Mignon
were entitled to invite three
guests to the ceremony – in
this instance Len Amadio
(who originally nominated
John for the award and with
whom he is pictured at top
left), Mignon’s cousin Helen
and John’s niece and
goddaughter Vanessa who
captured the photographs
for posterity.
John revealed that after the ceremony the Governor
confided in him that he’d always wanted to be a singer,
and that his wife was an opera fan who had seen him
perform on stage.
Old Paradians gain from junior investment
The Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club
is now reaping the rewards of its investment in the game
at junior level, with Marcus Nolan, a recent under 19s
graduate, awarded the club’s Best and Fairest for the
2016 season.
Marcus is one of six players from the club’s under 19
grade now playing seniors. He is pictured at the bottom
left with fellow under 19 turned senior players
(clockwise) Sean Money, Darcy Cotter and Ben Ferraro.
“This is a terrific outcome for Marcus and we
congratulate him on winning this prestigious award,”
OPAAFC President Mike Jolley said. “As a club we are
really proud of our graduates who are showing they
have the right skills and attitude to make a real
difference when they get the opportunity to play at the
senior level.”
Mike highlighted the outstanding work of Ian Fairley, the
club’s under 19s Coach of the past four seasons,
together with his assistants and the hard-working
committee. Central to this activity has been the strong
affiliation the club now enjoys with its junior club Parade
St Damians and the highly-successful Junior
Development Academy program established in 2016.
“We have done a lot of work to ensure we provide a
great environment for our younger players to grow and
develop their skills and to ensure they have a strong
pathway into senior football,” Mike said.
The football club now provides one of the best playing and
social facilities in suburban football and is proud to be
amongst the oldest and most successful clubs in the
Victorian Amateur Football Association. It prides itself on
providing a family-based environment in which parents are
encouraged to be actively involved in their children’s
sporting career.
The OPAAFC is extending an invitation to any player
wanting to join the club’s under 19 or senior grade teams
in 2017. Pre-season training is scheduled to begin in mid-
November 2016 and additional information can be
obtained from club Secretary Damian Hannam on mobile

66’ers Celebrate in grand style
At League level, 1966 is remembered as THE year of the
Saint. At Amateur level it’s remembered as yet another
year of the OP – one of six Old Paradian A Grade Grand
Final victories achieved through that halcyon period.
50 years ago last month, the Old Paradians team achieved
one of its finest victories in winning the ’66 pennant.
Fittingly the celebration of this wonderful milestone was the
focus of the Old Paradians’ Association’s September
luncheon at the RACV club where ’66 players and a large
gathering of members and guests came together to relive
the excitement of those wonderful times.
Pictured here is coach John Booth with surviving members
of the 1966 team and family representatives of those now
deceased after being presented with commemorative
premiership medallions.
From left to right is Peter Gordon, Anita Jones (daughter of
the late Geoff Jones), Brendan Danaher, Eddie Murphy,
Steve Weyman (son of the late Brian Weyman),
Len Foster, John Booth, Tony Pickett, Graham Mans-
field, Bernie Hart (son of the late Cliff Hart), John Tudor,
Bernie O’Brien, Peter Peyton and Spence Williams.
Past President and now committeeman Peter Gilmartin
recalled in his presentation that while 1966 was one of
six A Grade flags won by the club in the sixties, this was
very special victory for a host of reasons.
“That year was John Booth’s first year as senior coach,
Lou Arthur finished his 22-year reign as club President
and after scraping into the final four the team won three
finals by an aggregate winning margin of 20 points to
secure a premiership, defeating flag favourites Mel-
bourne High School Old Boys,” Peter said.
Peter congratulated the 1966 players and paid tribute to
John Booth who went on to coach another three prem-
ierships at the club. Luncheon MC David Jones then
called on John Booth to share a few memories of the ’66
year with the audience.
John highlighted the strong bond that existed amongst
members of the 1966 team, which enabled them to find
something extra in emerging victorious in those tight
finals matches.
In closing, John praised his players and thanked them
for their wonderful support for him as their coach.
Peter then presented John Booth and 1966 players and
family representatives of those now deceased with a
special commemorative medal struck for the occasion.
John Tudor then rounded out the memorable occasion,
reciting to a hushed audience his now famous poem of
the 1966 team and its famous Grand Final victory.
Former players then belted out a full-blooded version of
the Yarrangabee War Cry.
Dennis Wheelahan, a long-serving past Secretary of the
football club and regular OPA luncheon attendee, de-
scribed the reunion as “a great day for the both the foot-
ball club and the Old Paradians’ Association” and
thanked the organisers for what was a truly memorable
occasion.
OPA presents . . . class with glass
The Old Paradians’ Association has much pleasure in
convening a wine-tasting event in Melbourne’s leafy east,
on the evening of Remembrance Day, November 11.
From 6.45pm for 7.00pm kick-off at East Kew’s salubrious
V-Zug Kitchen Showroom at 2/796 High Street, you will
find a selection of wines within arm’s length of your palate -
not to mention the complimentary glass of bubbly on arrival
and gourmet delicacies, on the occasion of the
Association’s much-anticipated “Class with Glass”.
Old Paradian Phillip Hude (1982), who these days
operates Armadale Cellars, is putting up six of his favourite
wines to go with the tasty culinary delights on offer.
If you would like to be part of the OPA’s Class with Glass
at V-Zug, please book at your earliest convenience via the
following Trybooking link-

Cost is $59 and the President and esteemed members of
the OPA truly look forward to your company.
College Captains meet at OPA Luncheon
Sixty-five years separate the investitures of these two
Parade College Captains.
Pictured here at Wednesday’s OPA Monthly Luncheon
are Noah Volau (2016) and Noel Purcell (1951). They
had just met for the first time following the excellent
speeches delivered by Br. Bill Wilding and Old Paradian
John Mount (1962).
Old Paradians appoint Ryan Smith 2017 Senior Coach
The Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club
is pleased to announce Ryan Smith as its Senior Coach
for the 2017 season.
In making the announcement, Club
President, Mike Jolley said that
members of the selection panel
were impressed with the strong
coaching background and
communication skills that Ryan
displayed at interview.
Jolley added: “the Club is committed to climbing out of D
section in the VAFA and has its sights firmly set on
climbing back into the higher divisions of the
competition”.
