From the Principal … Welcome to Week 5 where the weather has cooled down again after such a nice warm weekend. This week is Book Week. The theme this year is ‘Reading is my Superpower’. It was wonderful to see so many students and staff dress up yesterday to take part in our parade and picnic. Congratulations to Mr Lorello on organising yesterday’s event. I’m sure everyone who attended was impressed with the parade and the costumes. This year we are participating in the Tell Them From Me survey. Notes were sent home to all families regarding this valuable opportunity. Through this survey families will be able to provide feedback on school programs and practices as well as suggestions for future directions. We anticipate our community will involve themselves in the process. Opera Australia will be performing next week at our school. This is an amazing opportunity for all of our students to be involved in. Feedback from last year’s performance was nothing but positive. We are fortunate enough to have been able to subsidise this visit for our students. The cost of the performance would usually be $8, however, we have covered part of the cost reducing the amount to $5 per student. As of yesterday there were 210 students across the school who have not returned their note or money. We are asking all parents to please ensure this event is paid for by tomorrow (Wednesday). It would be extremely disappointing if students missed out on this unique opportunity or we had to cancel the event. This week the staff will participate in their second extended staff meeting with Jo Dooner. Professional learning for all staff at Governor is extremely important and highly valued by everyone. The training and learning that takes place at these afternoon/evening sessions helps us to continually improve the programs and lessons that are delivered in classrooms every day. Please be aware that the next session Jo Dooner will run for parents will be held on Friday 20 September from 9am – 11am. I would encourage as many parents as possible to take advantage of this opportunity. More details about this session will be made available over the next few weeks. Week 5 Term 3 20 August 2019

Congratulations to the students from 3/4KT who came to visit me last week. I was extremely impressed with their work in

mathematics. They explained to me how they had collected and collated data, then represented their data in a variety of

graphs.

I also enjoyed the opportunity of working in the library with 5KV last Thursday. We worked through a procedure to make

playdough and identify the changes that different ingredients underwent. As groups we needed to problem-solve solutions to

playdough that was too sticky, too lumpy or too dry. It was messy, but lots of fun!

Have a great week

their class at this level and to the students who are moving to the Area finals which will be held in October. Last week, the

Stage 3 winners were advertised in the newsletter. The following students were the winners and runner ups for Early Stage

Stage Two: (Year Three and Year Four): Winner: Denita Yonan (4IE) Runner Up: Melis Yilmaz (4AH)

Last week, the Library was transformed into all things Science.

Mr Lorello was a wonderful mad scientist where all students

participated in various Science experiments and focused on themes

from the new Science syllabus.

It is almost here! On Wednesday 28th August 2019, Opera Australia

will be performing ‘In the Light of the Moon’ here at GPK.

Thank you to all of the parents who returned the permission note and

payment so that your child can attend not only a wonderful performance

but an educational one as well. How often do we get the opportunity for

our children to experience the Opera? I’m sure that your child will want to

tell you all about the performance when they get home.

Note: Tomorrow, Wednesday 21st August 2019, is the last day to pay for this event. Only $5….the cost of a coffee!!!

This week, we are celebrating all things that are books. The theme for Book Week 2019 is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’.

Students will celebrate Book Week when they visit the Library for their weekly lesson. Students also participated in a Book

Character Parade and Picnic with their buddy class. This took place yesterday. Teachers and students took advantage of the

theme and showed us their favourite character with special powers!

On Friday, 23rd August 2019, the P and C will be running the annual Fathers’ Day stall in the hall. For only $5 your child can

purchase a special gift for their dad, grandfather or any other male who is important to them. Every child who purchases a

gift will go into a draw to win another gift for their dad.

Note: The P and C will not be providing a plastic bag for the gift. Please ensure that you send

your child to school with a reusable bag to carry their gift(s).

Good luck to all of the students who will attend the PSSA semi-finals on Friday. Have an enjoyable week!

Deputy Principal

Public Speaking News - The words ‘public speaking’ are words that could make the best of us cringe. It involves capturing

the audience’s attention and articulating ourselves seamlessly, which is no mean feat. At Governor Philip King we have always

strived to develop the public speaking skills of all our students. Over the past few weeks we have had our class competitions

with our Stage Finals completed on Thursday 15th of August. Our finalists spoke with confidence and clarity and should be

commended on their effort. Congratulations to all the students who managed to reach this stage of the competition.

All the winners will progress to the Area District Final that will take place on Wednesday 16th October 2019.

Values Education - The value for Weeks 5 and 6 is Patience. Patience is having the capacity to respond rather than react to

situations while remaining calm within and not allowing ourselves to suffer from tension, stress, anxiety, fear or impulsiveness.

Patience shows we have skills of emotional self-management. When we have patience we feel peaceful irrespective of what is

happening, we are confident we can overcome all problems and achieve our goal, we are optimistic and in control, we do not

feel agitated, annoyed, angry or discouraged. We think clearly.

Children learn to become patient mainly by having to wait in queues, wait for their turn, and wait for others to finish talking.

They begin to acknowledge that problems are part of life and require time and determination to resolve.

Please discuss with your children what they have learnt about patience in their classes and encourage them to practice

patience in the home environment.

Safe, Respectful Learner Program - The focus rule for Weeks 5 and 6 is ‘Be Respectful, Support and include others’.

We feel happier when others are friendly, help us and include us in their games and discussions. It is important to treat

others in the same manner. Please discuss this with your children.
