Children had the opportunity to participate in some challenging science competitions coordinated by Mr Sanderson. A wonderful Science Tabloid afternoon was also conducted in which all children K-6 had the opportunity to conduct a range of experiments and investigate many different scientific theories. Some of which worked and some which did not! Many thanks to Mr Sanderson, staff and the parents who assisted on the day. As parents, there are many wonderful opportunities to discuss and explore science around the home daily in the real world. It is most important that we encourage our children to investigate and understand the scientific world in which they live and support them in asking questions, testing their ideas and solving scientific problems. Awards Throughout the year, there are a number of external competitions conducted in which children from many classes participate. Occasionally, they are successful in receiving an award. This week, we were notified that Samara Bailye from Room 22 was successful in being selected as a finalist in the 2018 Tim Winton Award for Young Writers. Additionally, Rosie Kelly from Room 22 has received a prize in the West Australian Design an Ad Competition. These are both great competitions in which to participate whether prizes are won or not. It’s an opportunity for children to apply their skills for a different purpose. Congratulations to both the girls for their great efforts and to all the other children who participated.

‘FIND YOUR TREASURE’FIND YOUR TREASURE’FIND YOUR TREASURE’FIND YOUR TREASURE’ Each year, across Australia, The Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together by celebrating Children’s Book Week. During this time Schools, Libraries, Booksellers, Authors, Illustrators and children celebrate Australian Children's Literature. The theme for 2018 is “Find Your Treasure”. This years’ Book Week parade will be conducted on Friday 24 August. Students are encouraged to dress up as a book character. Students and families always engage enthusiastically with this event and we are looking forward to seeing the characters that turn up! Further information and a list of Award winning books can be found at https://cbca.org.au/winners-2018.In addition to the parade, the school is conducted a book swap today. This provides an excellent forum for families to

swap books and build the excitement around reading for pleasure. Students were taken through in classes throughout the morning to use the tokens they have been given when donating books. Books were on sale for $1, if students had no tokens. Many book bargains are available in the community. Scholastic Book Club often offers books quite cheaply. In addition, many ‘treasures’ can be sourced at local op shops, and memberships of libraries, including e-libraries, are other economical options. Our current word count for Literacy Pro (Years 3-6) is over 72 million words with 17279 quizzes completed so far. This is a phenomenal effort and we are well on the way to our 100 million word and 22000 quizzes goal for 2018. The school library purchases all of the winning books suitable for primary aged students and these will be available for borrowing very soon. We would also like to remind parents about ensuring that children take care of the books, which are taken home from the school. This would apply to reading books as well as library books. There is an increasing trend for books to return to school with damage. This includes scribbling, torn pages and water damage. The cost of replacing these books is extensive and includes the labour needed to re-accession a replacement book into the library. Parents are asked to check the book carefully, before returning, and to ensure that books are kept away from toddlers and are transported in a library bag. Invoices are sent to parents for the cost of the replacement book. We appreciate your support in taking care of these precious resources, which bring so much pleasure to students.

Assembly Room 13 & 28Assembly Room 13 & 28Assembly Room 13 & 28Assembly Room 13 & 28 Congratulations to all students from Room 13 and Room 28 for hosting the Senior Assembly last Friday. The assembly opened with a fantastic performance from the Guitar Ensemble, followed by Mr Honey leading the whole school in singing the community song Wilderness. The theme of the assembly was ‘Heal the

World’, so the students of Room 13 and Room 28 explored environmental concerns, such as landfill, deforestation and pollution, and what can be done to ‘make a difference’. They performed the well-known songs “Rip Rip Wood Chip” by John Williamson and “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson and the lead actors of Planet Earth (Kobe) and Doctor (Shianne) played their parts flawlessly. The students have worked so hard for many weeks to prepare, including making their own costumes from recycled materials, learning their speaking parts, remembering songs and actions and completing poems and fables for the WOW Writing Boards. Thank you to the parents and families for helping their children organise their costumes and remember their lines. The students have worked tirelessly and we were so proud of the way they conducted themselves and performed.

Fire Brigade IncursionFire Brigade IncursionFire Brigade IncursionFire Brigade Incursion The Year Three cohort enjoyed a very informative incursion from the Fire Brigade last Thursday. The fireman gave the children a talk about fire safety in the home. They covered topics such as stove top safety, using charging devices and heater safety. The

children were then treated to a close inspection of fire engine equipment. The firemen demonstrated the jaws of life, breathing equipment and the clothing they use when attending and fighting a fire. What a wonderful opportunity for the children to become more comfortable with our community services. We are so grateful for the wonderful job that our local firemen do and thank them very much for coming to Wattle Grove Primary School.

HaziqHaziqHaziqHaziq My name is Haziq and I am in Room 27. My teachers are Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros. I have been attending this delightful school for eight years. There are five people in my family, my Mum and Dad, my sister Syabella, my brother Naqib and I. My Dad originally came from Christmas Island and my Mum is from Malaysia. We are a sporty family. I play soccer and footy my, sister plays KDNA Regional Netball, State Rangers Netball and National Indoor Netball. My brother does basketball and footy. Wattle Grove Primary School has very high standards. The staff at Wattle Grove are kind and caring. The School, the grounds, playgrounds and toilets are kept clean, thanks to the cleaners and staff. Every term we have a challenging quiz, known as the Principal’s Challenge, I’ve achieved 100%, three times. My favourite day is Harmony Day because it’s a day when all the cultures unite. I put 120% into my work and everything I do. I am very grateful to be given the role of a Student Representative.

CaitlinCaitlinCaitlinCaitlin My name is Caitlin and I have been a student at Wattle Grove for one and a half years. I am in Mr Sherlock’s and Mrs Queiros’ class. I came to Australia from New Zealand when I was about one year old with my older sister and my two parents from New Zealand. In my family, I have two older sisters, an older brother and my Mum and Dad. I now live with my Mum, Dad, sister and brother. My favourite subjects are Math and Science and when I grow up I want to be a Pathologist or an Inventor. When I came to this school I noticed how kind and caring everyone was. One thing I love about this school is the high standards and the home work and tests are challenging. The school provides students with opportunities such as PEAC, MAC and PACES. I am excited to take on the role of being a Student Representative and will carry out the role with integrity and be a good role model for the younger ones. I am super grateful for the opportunity to become a Student Representative and I will make the most of the opportunity.

TatianaTatianaTatianaTatiana My name Peshan (Tatiana) and I am a Year Six student in Mr Sherlock’s and Mrs Queiros’ class at Wattle Grove Primary School. I have been at Wattle Grove for three and a half years and I love it here. My Mum, Dad, my little sister Tanisha and I make up our family. My hobbies are swimming and dancing. A few years ago I left this great school. When I heard I was leaving, I started crying because this school was now my new home and I had already made some close friends. At the end of last year, I decided to ask my mum if I can come back to this magnificent school for Year Six and here I am. I am a wonderful Student Representative because I take care of situations that include students. I am a kind and caring person and I love to speak out at assemblies. My other school didn’t have a Student Representative Program. If they did I would have loved to be one.

MuzaferMuzaferMuzaferMuzafer Good day, my name is Muzafer Ali and I’m in Room 27 with Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros .I have been going to Wattle Grove for eight years. My family is from Pakistan and Afghanistan. My two younger sisters and I were born in Australia. I am very dedicated to playing the game of soccer. I have been playing for four years. I play for Forrestfield United Soccer. I also played basketball for two years. I have been doing swimming for three years. I played cricket for a year. Wattle Grove has very high standards. We work very hard at school. Whenever I have been given a task by my teachers, I want to give 130% to everything I do. Recently, I have been elected as a Faction Captain for Purple. My role is to train younger students to be prepared for the carnival and to be a role model for everyone in my faction. I am really enjoying my time as a Student Representative.
