A number of projects have been completed over the holiday period:-

The floor of the Greening Auditorium has been replaced.

Rooms E21 – 25 have been fully renovated with the reorganisation of the ICT hub.

The Callan Wing extension was handed over to the College by the builders such that new lockers and furniture can be

    installed over the break.

Room R24 at Preston has been developed into an Advanced Placement centre

The Quadrangle renovation at Bundoora is extremely well advanced and we expect completion by the end of January.

    Buses

Kevin Bourke, Logistics and Environment Manager, has allocated students to the various College bus services. Minor alterations

have been made to some bus routes and all involved in this have been advised. All students using services to or from the College

direct must have a current College bus pass and/or MYKI card.

    Traffic and Parking

Traffic will be very heavy on the College property on the first few days of school both morning and afternoon. If you wish to drop off

your son, please come early. Parents who wish to park should do so only in designated car parks, well off the roadways, and to

cooperate with instructions from College parking officials. Drivers need to be attentive to students crossing the roadway and to give

    way at designated crossings.

This Newsletter is our major means of communication with parents so please ensure that you take the time to read it. We

produce the Newsletter every second week; normally sent electronically. Parents are urged to ensure that we have their

current preferred email address to receive the Newsletter. Please advise reception immediately of any change of residential or

    email addresses and phone numbers.

The Newsletter is always available on the College website. Hard copies are available for collection at Reception on both

campuses for anyone unable to access the Newsletter electronically.

Year 7 Families and New Families to Parade College in 2016

    Parent Portal

Year 7 2016 and new families to Parade College will be receiving a letter with individual usernames and passwords this week

to access the Parental Portal. Instructions on accessing the Portal will be also be included.

CareMonkey – The Health Care System at the College

An email will be sent to parents of Year 7 2016 students and new families shortly regarding the set up of your CareMonkey

    profile for your child.

CareMonkey is an innovative parent controlled electronic medical form for schools that have a duty of care responsibility. It is

an electronic version of the paper based forms that you have previously been required to fill in for excursions and camps etc. It

also provides parents with the opportunity to update medical information promptly and accurately while providing the school

with instant access to the emergency information provided by you. When advised to do so please create your CareMonkey

profile for your son and share this information with the College. We will then have access to the data that you have entered

and we will use this system to have access to student medical information when attending camps and excursions. All

excursion permission letters will then be emailed to parents/guardians using this system. You will be able to grant approval for

your son to attend these activities.

Parents of Year 8 to 12 students who have still not created their CareMonkey profile are required to create their profile for

their son as soon as possible as this system will be fully operational from the beginning of the 2016 school year.

Welcome to Parade College for 2016

A very warm welcome to families joining the Parade and the Edmund Rice community for the first

time. Our aim is to provide experiences at Parade which allow your sons to discover and develop their interests and talents, to

embrace the many varied opportunities life at the College offers, and to grow into thoughtful young men, ready to take their place

in the communities they then move into once they have completed their education with us. At the same time, we look forward to

the contribution that your son will make to the College in his time with us.

    Year 7 2016 Families

Our largest, newest group of Paradians enjoyed their Orientation Day in December last year, and we were delighted to meet

them. We hope that their first day as Paradians on Friday 29 January is equally as exciting for them. Below are a few reminders

for our Year 7 2016 students:-

    All Year 7 2016 Students – Friday 29 January

Remember to make sure your son knows where to find you if you are picking him up at the end of his first day.

Make sure your son has his College padlock and Student Planner with him on his first day for his locker.

Your son should be dressed in his Summer College uniform. He can choose to wear his blazer to and from school in

Terms 1 and 4 – it is not compulsory in those terms. However, he will need to have it and his College tie at school for

Photo Day on Thursday 4 February.

Please make sure that your son’s school shoes are made of hard, black, polishable leather – please see the next page for

details as to the correct shoes to purchase.

Your son will need to bring his lunch and snacks to school on Friday. The Canteens will be open if he prefers to buy his

lunch – an icy pole and drink will be provided at lunch time as a special treat.

Buses will be running in the morning and the afternoon on 29 January – make sure you have a back-up plan in place in

case your son misses his bus at some stage during the year!

    PRESTON YEAR 7 STUDENTS

Your son should bring his pencil case, an exercise book AND HIS IPAD with him to

school on Friday January 29. He can also bring along any of the stationery materials you

    have purchased.

    BUNDOORA YEAR 7 STUDENTS

Your son should bring his pencil case, and an exercise book with him to school on Friday

January 29. He can also bring along any of the stationery materials you have purchased.

On Monday 1 February, he should have his iPad at school, as he will be connected to the

College network in the first three days of the first full week of school.

    Year 7 2016 Liturgy

At 2.30pm on Friday 29 January, the Year 7 and Year 12 students at both Campuses will celebrate a Liturgy together, to

welcome our newest Paradians, and to begin the process of handing on the traditions of our College.

Year 7 parents are very welcome to join the boys and staff for this in College Hall at Bundoora or in the MacKillop Centre at

Preston. The Liturgy will conclude around 3.00pm, and the students will be free to go home with parents then.

  • And welcome back to our continuing families and students for 2016

Some reminders appear on the next page for the first week back for 2016. We hope it is a

productive year for your sons, academically and personally.

    Uniform

Please check that your son has the correct summer shirt ready to go

    for Day 1.

If your son chooses to wear a singlet under his shirt, please make

sure that it is plain WHITE – no logos, prints or colours.

Grey Shorts or trousers can be worn in Term 1 – dress shorts only –

no elastic or drawstring waists please!

Jumpers and blazers go together to and from school! If your son

wishes to wear his jumper to and from school, he must wear his

    blazer as well!

Grey Marle Walk socks with black, hard, polishable leather

shoes – no canvas shoes, or black leather ‘basketball style’ shoes.

    No BLACK socks allowed

Leave all jewellery at home – no earrings, pierced jewellery,

necklaces, rings, bracelets, friendship bands, sports bands, or other

bands to be worn. If it is precious or important in any way to your

sons it is safer at home, away from possible accidental damage or

    loss.

Hair should be neat, clean and in a business-like style – eg; no

dreadlocks, braids, mohawks, etc. Hair length should not below the

    collar of the summer shirt.

If your son is shaving, please make sure that he is clean-shaven for school each day.

NB: All students in Years 7 to 12 at both campuses MUST wear College uniform to school on Thursday 4

February for College photos AND bring their blazers and ties with them.

VCAL and VCE students may wear the Senior Tie for these photos. They can be purchased for $27 at the Uniform

    Shops at both campuses.

    College Bus Network

    Students are not allowed to eat or drink on any of the buses to and from school;

    They are required to stay in their seats to and from school, and wear the seat belts where these are provided;

    Throwing any kind of material inside or outside the bus is a serious offence and will be treated as such;

Noise levels should be kept to a reasonable level to allow bus drivers to concentrate on the task of getting students

    safely to their destinations.

    Public Transport

We expect all students to behave with courtesy and respect towards drivers and other passengers when using any form of

public transport to and from school, and on excursions.

  • Plenty Road and Bell Street

For students’ safety, we require all boys who need to cross Plenty Road or Bell Street, for any reason, to do so at the lights on

the marked pedestrian crossings. The traffic lights at the entrance to the Bundoora Campus do not mark a pedestrian

crossing and students should not attempt to cross Plenty Road at that point.

Bundoora Parents, please do not ask your son to meet you in the Hungry Jack’s Carpark, or drop him off there in the

morning – the boys will always take the shortest way across the road, and there is no designated crossing from that

    point across Plenty Road.

We would ask that parents emphasise this point with their sons, so that students can remain safe as they cross two very busy

roadways. We also expect students to obey traffic signals, teacher directions and instructions given by crossing supervisors.

    Miss Regina Rowan

    Assistant Principal - Student Welfare

  • iPad Parent Workshop and Discussions Sessions

As part of the introduction of the iPad at Parade we are offering a Parent Workshop and Discussion session on “living with the

iPad at home”. The same session, covering the same content, will be offered on the two dates listed below. Parents/guardians

are invited to attend one of the sessions. The workshops are designed to enable parents to develop a basic understanding of the

iPad and some skills on how to manage its use in the home environment. The sessions will be running at both campuses from

7.30pm to 8.30pm and you are welcome to come to either campus session.

    Dates: Tuesday 16 February (Preston)

Thursday 18 February (Bundoora, Rivergum Theatre)

The session numbers are limited to fifty people to enable the workshop/discussion to be more focussed and to better address

individual family concerns. If you would like to attend a session please login to the Parade Parent Portal and click on the link

“Parent Workshops”. It is on the left hand menu of the Parent Portal. Select the date you wish to attend and then take up one of

the places available. If no places are available please try the other date.

Please note this is a Parent/Guardian session only. We ask parents/guardians NOT to bring students to enable open discussion

    between parents and staff.

Parents/guardians will need the student’s iPad and associated passwords that night.

    Director of E-Learning

VCE 2016 Information Evening - Tuesday 9 February For Parents of Students currently in Years 10,11 & 12

Parents of students currently in Years 11 and 12, and accelerating Year 10 students, are warmly invited to attend the VCE

Information Evening which will provide an opportunity to be fully informed about your son’s requirements and expectations as

they commence their studies in 2016. This evening is for parents only and will provide an opportunity to learn about the specifics

of the VCE. Your son’s prospects for a rewarding and effective education at Parade College are greater when we can all work

together to support his learning and personal development. To that end, we strongly encourage parents who are new to having a

child enter the VCE to attend.

  • From The Old Paradians

    Vale Guy Rodrigues, 1935-2015

Guy Rodrigues, a long-serving and dedicated servant of

the Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club, and

father to former Paradians Garnet (1980) and Gavin

(1986), died recently at the age of 80.

The name Guy Rodrigues has been synonymous with

Parade for more than 40 years – a remarkable feat

considering this extremely popular figure became part of

the Parade community just four years after his arrival in

this country from India with his young family.

Since then, Guy’s contributions have extended into the

Parade community in a number of ways including the Old

Paradians’ Association in the earlier years.

Some would argue there was an omen in Guy arriving in

Australia in 1968 as it was the first year the OPAAFC took

out the senior, reserve and under 19 premierships.

For years, Guy has committed his energies with little fuss

or fanfare to both Parade College and the Old Paradians’

    Association Amateur Football Club.

Though he never attended the College, Guy was

recognised as an Honorary Old Paradian in 2014, an

award he shares with close friends Maurie Considine and

Keith Sharkie with whom he is pictured.

This year, he was front and centre in the winners’ circle

at Craigieburn when the Old Paradians’ Association

Amateur Football Club senior team landed the D

Section Premiership – the club’s first in almost 30 years.

Guy’s passing follows the recent death of Phil

McLaughlin, the captain of the club’s Team of the

Century and generally considered the greatest Old

Paradian footballer ever to represent the club.

The deepest sympathies of the Parade community are

with all members of the Rodrigues family at this time.

An old teammate remembers the late Phillip McLaughlin

“Among the pantheon of great Old Paradian and VAFA

footballers in my view there is no-one better than Phil

McLaughlin. His exemplary record speaks for itself. To

run onto the playing field at the Old Scotch oval or other

grounds, wearing the O.P. Guernsey, next to Phil, was a

    priceless privilege.”

Kevin Rickard AM, Old Paradian (1953), pays tribute to

the late Phillip McLaughlin – a representative of the

OPAAFC in 185 senior matches from 1949–1961,

Captain in 1952–1956 and 1958–1959, Best & Fairest

    Player 1950–1951, Member of 1951 and 1958

Premiership Teams, Life Member and captain of the

    OPAAFC Team of the Century

Old Paradians’ VAFA ‘B’ Grade Premiership team of 1958.

Brian Hill to his right and Geoff Borrack to his left.

    Presidents partner for frontline conservation

Pictured here with former US President Bill Clinton is Sean

Willmore (1990) - surely the best networker of any Old

Paradian out of the Bundoora campus.

A global champion for frontline conservation, Sean, as

President of the International Ranger Federation and

founder of The Thin Green Line Foundation, recently met

President Clinton “to highlight the critical work being done

by our Rangers on the frontline of conservation around the

    world”.

“It’s important that the rangers sacrifice, struggle and

success is heard at the highest levels, so they too can be

spokes-people for rangers and conservation. We spoke of

the current poaching situation and the need to get more

support to rangers the world over,” said Sean through the

    foundation.

“I also presented President Clinton with one of our snare

wire bracelets, as a symbol of the 180 degree change

    needed.”

The snare wire is removed by rangers from a park in

Zambia, before it could trap an animal, then given to the

local ladies who turn it into amazing jewellery, and the

profits are shared 50/50 with the anti-poaching work and

    the ladies.

“He agreed it was the perfect symbol of why we were

gathered at Clinton Global Initiative. I took it off my wrist

and placed it on his – ‘a perfect fit’ he said, then ‘let’s

get some support for those rangers’. We shook hands

once more and then he shook everyone else’s hand

    wearing that bracelet.

Sean added that whilst he was unaware of what might

come of this initiative, “I do know that we have to take

every opportunity, and do everything in our power to

gather more allies to protect nature and its protectors,

    the rangers”.

“A heartfelt thank you to all of you who do make the

effort and sacrifice to support us - please spread the

word so we can do even more,” Sean said.
