From the President’s Desk Ted Adams, President, NMSSAR Compatriots: We have had a good year. I set two major goals for my tenure this year and we have essentially completed those. First we donated the plaque to the Palace of the Governors honoring our fellow compatriots, descendants of the Presidio of Santa Fe whose forefathers contributed to our freedom. I was very satisfied with the ceremony and attendance and the plaque is now mounted for all to see. I wish to thank all who helped and attended the presentation, I am honored. Fran Levine, Director of the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, and President Teddy Adams. Next we have our new chapter in Farmington, the Three River Chapter, and we will complete the charter on January 3, 2012. Any who wish to be charter members and have a dual membership are welcome to join us. This will be the successful completion of my second major goal for my year as your state president. The additional goal I have taken is to increase our finances and support for the 2012 congress, which we are sponsoring with Arizona. This we did with the gun raffle with the assistance of Dick Almeter, George Biles, and the Custom Cartridge Gun Shop in Las Cruces. We have made enough to date to pay for the M1A rifle. We still owe for the light and the scope; then it will be all profit for us. I ask for everyoneʼs continued support in selling the raffle tickets. I also wish to thank everyone for their support in making the President Generalʼs visit a success. We had a very nice turn out at the dinner and we honored the state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Zadeea Harris, with the Daughters of Freedom award for her help in forming the new chapter. Additionally we awarded the Gold Good Citizenship award to Kirk Ellis for his John Adams series. For his long and faithful service and having served in many positions in the NMSSAR I awarded Ray Alexander the Patriot award. And finally so he would not forget I award a name tag to George Garcia making him the head of the NMSSAR Color Guard. Again thank you all for your support in making this a great year. ”In Honor of Santa Fe’s Spanish Soldiers Whose 1779-1783 Contributions Supported the American Revolution and Helped Win Independence for the United States.”. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

New Mexico Society Color Guard Supports the Presentation of a Plaque to Honor Spanish Presidio Soldiers in

Santa Fe 1779 – 1783by George Biles

On Sunday, November 13th the Color Guard was present at the Plaque Presentation at the State of New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe honoring the Presidio Soldiers of Santa Fe that supported our Revolution with their contribution to King Carlo IIIʼs war chest.

George Biles, Jim Thornton, Lionel Rael, George Garcia, Ambassador Jorge Dezcallar and his wife, Vernon Casius, Jimmie Fennell, Charles Martinez, James Hesse

As a result of their support, the Spanish contributed firearms, cannon, uniforms, medical supplies, foodstuffs, tents, cots and bedding for Washington ʼs Continental Army.  The documentation of their contribution allows prospective SAR and DAR members who descend from them to join our Societies.

The project, proposed and supported by NM Society President Teddy Adams resulted in research by the Museum staff. The New Mexico Society supported in the search of records assisted by genealogist Henrietta Christmas.  A poster listing all the names was produced by graphic artist Natalie Baca listing the names so

descendents could trace their ancestor(s) who served at the Presidio.

Museum Director Francis Levine co-ordinate the presentation and reception at the Museum that included Spainʼs Ambassador to the United States, Jorge Dezcallar and former Palace of the Governors Director, historian and author, Dr Tom Chavez, both of whom spoke about the support that Spain provided to Washingtonʼs army. The Plaque will be installed near the Palace of the Governors front door and Presidio Soldiers records will be available in the Museum files.

The NM Society Color Guard presented and posted the Colors during the Presentation.  Four of the members present are direct descendent of Presidio Soldiers.  They are Vernon Casius, George Garcia, Charles Martinesz y Villia, and Lionel Rael.    The Uniform of the Color Guard is based on the original uniform of the Presidio Soldiers of the period and was chosen by the New Mexico Society to honor them for their support to the American Revolution.

The audience of over 75 attendees included many NM Society Compatriots and members of Los Compadries group that support the Museum and other activities in Santa Fe related to the Spanish history and involvement in the development of New Spain and later New Mexico.

The New Mexico Society Color Guard of nine members have presented and posted the Colors at many civic and national events in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The Gadsden Color Guard provides similar support in the Las Cruces area.

President General Larry Magerkurth Visits New Mexico SAR Chapters on

November 10, 2011by Sam Baty and Vernon Casias

Members of the New Mexico Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NMSSAR) were delighted that PG Magerkurth was available for the gala banquet at the Hotel Albuquerque on November 10, 2011. The members expressed their appreciation by turning out in large numbers for the banquet. In response, the PG didnʼt disappoint anyone, giving a riveting speech that was filled with patriotic statements about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The PG was so moved on a recent trip that he wrote, in his own words, what it means to be an American! Fortunately, he shared these words with us.

SAR President General (PG) Magerkurth (left) is greeted by NMSSAR President Ted Adams as the two prepare for the festivities in honor of PG Magerkurth’s visit

The PG was accompanied by his lovely wife, Barbara. The two make an outstanding couple, and SAR members can be very proud

that two such people are in the PG and First Lady positions.

Both the PG and First Lady expressed their appreciation to NMSSAR for all that they had learned from their visit to New Mexico. The feeling is certainly mutual! We have all learned a great deal from them.NMSSAR President Adams and NMSSAR 1st Vice President George Biles Collaborate on Important NMSSAR Business

Compatriots Adams and Biles wasted little time in getting down to NMSSAR business. Their time together at the banquet was very beneficial, as it gave the two leaders a chance to meet face-to-face. Compatriot Adams is a member of the Albuquerque Chapter, and Compatriot Biles is a member of the Gadsden Chapter. The Chapters are about 250 miles apart, so functions such as these are very useful in conducting business as well as honoring prestigious guests!

NMSSAR Color Guard Prepares to Present the Flags

Color Guard members formed up outside of the banquet area to prepare for presenting the colors at the banquet. The American flag is at the far left, and the SAR flag is at the far right. The Color Guard will also carry the colors at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, NM on November 13.

Compatriots Can Again Support theNew Mexico Society Color Guard

with Their DonationsLast year we asked New Mexico Compatriots for donations to purchase Color Guard Uniforms –

Work Coats and Breeches. Color Guard members contributed $200 each for hats, shirts, socks, garters and gloves. Your response was fantastic with over $4,500 donated in about six months.

We outfitted nine members in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. This year we are again asking for your support to continue our program to outfit up to five more members. The New Mexico Society owns the Work Coats and Breeches and will pass them to new Color Guard members as required. With proper care, these Uniforms should last a good number of years and be altered, to fit new members as they step forward.

Your Color Guard is being noticed as described elsewhere in these newsletter and prior ones. It is a major marketing tool to gain members and provide awareness to the people of New Mexico as to who we are and what we represent. It is a teaching tool for our education program and will be a major part of our participation in the 2012 Congress in Phoenix, AZ in July of 2012 as well as other State Centennial events in 2012. We need your support and we need your personal participation.

Let’s do it again this year!
