Summer 2016 PARTNERING WITH MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Sue Howard A BRIEF LOOK AT SUE HOWARD Newly Elected President Hi, my name is Sue Howard and I am the newly elected President for Lifelong Learners. I grew up in Chicago, went to college in Illinois and Wisconsin and then in Minnesota. I have worked as a Physical Therapist for 49 years, along with teaching at a Community College and working as an Academic Dean. I have always encouraged lifelong learning (intellectual, social, and physical) with my patients and in my students. I am married to Steve, who retired 10 years ago as a Deputy Sheriff; we have 3 children (1 in Mankato, 1 in Edina, and 1 in Phoenix) and 3 grandchildren (in Phoenix). When we decided to move to the Mankato area I went online to see what the cities and towns had to offer. Once I saw that there was a group called Lifelong Learners, I was ‘sold’ on the fact that the move was going to open new doors for us.  By attending various Lifelong Learner activities, I have been able to meet new people, challenged what I knew about many topics, and have been exposed to areas I knew little about. I had been involved with Great Decisions for 5 years in Austin, MN, and was thrilled to see that Lifelong Learners sponsored the presentations here. The Nobel Conference, many presentations each quarter, book club, dinner and lunch groups and being on 2 committees in Lifelong Learners have helped to make me feel right at home in our new environment. I also enjoy reading (a book is always with me) and have ‘dabbled’ in various art adventures. My husband attends presentations, Great Decisions, lunch and dinner groups, and is in the men’s Bridge Group. He enjoys hunting and fishing, too. We both like traveling, and have been blessed with being able to travel to many places around the world and experience new and unusual cultures. I am looking forward to serving you as President of Lifelong Learners this year. I am so impressed with the work of the committees and the dedication of so many people who believe in our mission of providing ‘learning on the bright side of life’. As a team, Lifelong Learners will continue to increase the types and variety of presentations, provide social opportunities for members, and keep us active and growing.  Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. ~Benjamin Franklin “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” Henry Ford Research shows that there is value in continuous learning: it keeps a person young in mind, body, spirit. Our mission of providing vitality in later life follows that research. The 20 year celebration of Mankato Area Life Long Learners is proof that people want and love to learn! What a wonderful get-together! 80+ people attended the celebration, including new members, existing members, past presidents, and guests. Our organization focuses on learning, of course, and, also on relationships, friendships, special events, and energy within the group.  There was a lot of energy at the celebration and the energy is also felt in our variety of offerings. I am excited and privileged to serve as your president this next year and am ready to go! RESTAURANT GROUPS Harriet Plotz The restaurant groups are thriving with 39 in the evening groups and 26 in the two lunch groups. Lunch groups have two choices; 11:30 A.M. with pick of date and restaurant and 1:05 P.M. at Old Country Buffet on third Wednesday of each month. Call Harriet at 387-3990 for more details.

2 Summer 2016

IN RETROSPECT

Tricia Nienow

It has been a stimulating year for Mankato Area Lifelong Learners which culminated in a gala 20th anniversary celebration on May

16th. Joining in the celebration were past presidents, Road Scholars, and representatives from the UMD University for Seniors. Elizabeth Peters and Dave

Janovy were awarded Member Emeritus positions in recognition of their outstanding contributions. The Annual Meeting preceded the anniversary celebration.

Two other memorable events took place earlier in the year. Tom Hanson, Retired Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State returned to Mankato on April 16, to speak on The State of U.S. Foreign Policy in 2016. Mankato Area Lifelong Learners was able to make this opportunity available to the greater community without charge. Generous sponsorships made this opportunity possible. The event was held in Ostrander Auditorium, Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Also returning this year was soft jazz vocalist Maud Hixson, along with Rick Carlson on the keyboard and Keith Boyles on bass. The April 1 concert was

held at the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota who cohosted the event with Mankato Area Lifelong Learners. The Judy Garland theme

was perfect for the setting. Several sponsorships made this concert possible and ticket sales netted a pleasant

profit for both organizations.

A great celebration, lots of ‘connecting’ between members and potential new members, and several people said they’d be joining the group!!

I wasn’t on the committee but certainly appreciate everything they did to make it a wonderful celebration for us all.

It was a successful day

for Lifelong Learners!

A very successful

get-together.

So happy we moved here

and met all of you!!!!!

Thanks!!

What a great group!!

WHAT a great Anniversary CELEBRATION for Lifelong Learners! ! ! It was such a well-organized and well-conceived party! Inviting the Road Scholars went over well, inviting the Duluth people was a good idea, the attendance was very impressive. It couldn’t have been better! Thank you all, and pass my thanks on to others who were involved in the planning.

LOOKING FORWARD NOBEL CONFERENCE 52: In Search of Economic Balance

September 27, 28, 2016 • Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN

Joyce Sandry

The transition to a world economy has revealed a variety of tradeoffs that polarize economists and policy makers. Optimizing a business for efficiency often results in fewer and lower paying jobs. Regulating businesses for the public good may reduce their ability and incentive to develop innovative solutions to challenging problems.

The 2016 Nobel Conference brings economists from around the world to help us understand some of the challenges facing real world implementation of economic theories.

One very special benefit of being a member of Mankato Area Lifelong Learners is the opportunity to purchase reserved seating tickets for the Nobel Conference at the greatly reduced price of $75 (compared to $120 for the general public for reserved seating.) Purchase tickets by mail or online – see registration form enclosed. Membership must be current at the time of the Conference to receive tickets.
