From the PresidentBy Rex Burr
Dear River Run Homeowners,
It’s hard to believe winter is nearly half over. My lonely snow blowerhasn’t seen any action in more than a year, which is fine with me.
In this month’s letter, I am going to seek your help and involvement withtwo important items. First, it’s that time again to solicit volunteers to serveon the River Run Homeowners Association Board of Directors. This yearthere are four two-year terms up for re-election. Please consider thisunique opportunity to volunteer your time and talents to ourneighborhood. A nomination form is included in this newsletter on page3 for your convenience. Please complete and return by February 13th.
Second, and at the risk of beating a dead horse with a broken record (orsomething like that), I need your commitment to attend the upcomingmeetings regarding the proposed zoning changes (i.e., concrete recyclingand storage) at neighboring Boughton Materials quarry. This is a veryimportant item, one that, if approved, could have very negative effects onour health and property values. There’s power in numbers, and it’simperative you show support and concern for our neighborhood byattending the following important meetings:
1) Will County Land Use Meeting on February 11th at 9:30 a.m.2) Will County Board Meeting on February 21st at 9:30 a.m.
Both meetings will be held at the Will County Office Building located at302 N. Chicago Street in Joliet. For your convenience, round trip bustransportation will be available for a fee of $6 each day. Busses will leavethe River Run Clubhouse at 8:45 a.m. on the 11th and 21st, and areestimated to return by noon. If you plan to utilize the bus transportation, please RSVP with the number of riders to [email protected]. Asyou’re probably aware by now, these meetings are subject to change, soplease call to confirm before leaving your home.
Thanks in advance to everyone who attends the meetings, and to thosewho submit board nominations. Your involvement in our neighborhoodis important and appreciated.

the happy gardenertips for everyone who loves to dig
By Heather Prince
Winter is a great time toexamine your viewsthrough your windows
and evaluate what you see. Are theviews boring? You can add interestin the winter with the textures ofbranches, a framework of trees andvarying shades of evergreen. Hereare some things to think about asyou take a look around:
• Color – Enliven your view anddelight your eye by adding asplash of color.
o Greens - Evergreens come inmany sizes and shapes but alsocolors. The crisp blue of juniper or
spruce lends distance to you view. The bright gold of falsecypress cancheer up a part shade corner. Sometypes of arborvitae shrubs turn richorange for added drama.Groundcovers may be evergreen, too. Pachysandra’s glossy darkfoliage stands out in winter.Ajuga’s dark burgundy leaves addinteresting accents at the front ofthe border. o Reds and yellows - Many shrubs
such as yellow twig or red twigdogwood have beautiful winterbark that is especially showy infront of mature pines or spruces.
o Late winter flowers - Watch forearly blossoms! Some hardy plantsand bulbs bloom as soon as thetemperatures rise regularly abovefreezing. It’s great fun to find thefirst flower of the year. Consideradding snowdrops, winter aconite, snow crocus, hellebores, witchhazels or Cornelian cherrydogwoods for a early bloom.
• Views – Take a moment to payattention to your views indoorsand out.
o What are some of your favoriteviews from inside? Are therepicture windows that could use afocal point? A home office thatneeds inspiration? Kitchen
windows that look out to an emptydeck? Think about what sorts ofcolors and textures might enlivenyour view to the outdoors.
o Step outdoors and step back tolook at your house. You might evenwant to cross the street or stop nextdoor. Do you like what you see? What do visitors experience whenthey walk to your front door? Whatdo you see when you walk throughyour backyard?
o Are there views that you do notenjoy? Winter can be a good time tonotice areas where you may wantsome screening. Plants can softenunsightly views and disguisetroublesome areas.
• Birds – Our feathered friendsare attracted to different plantseach season. In winter try toprovide food and shelter.
o Birds are hungry in winter.Consider planting plants thatproduce berries and seeds such ascrabapple, viburnum, chokecherry, ornamental grasses and junipers.
o It’s cold out there! Birds willfrequently roost together in denseevergreen trees and shrubs such asyews, spruces and junipers. Theyalso prefer dense shrubs as coverfrom hungry predators.

River Run Raptors Swim TeamSubmitted by Franz Weyandt • President, River Run Raptors
Swim season is almost upon us. The River Run Raptors Swim Team is anot-for-profit organization and a member of the Naperville Park DistrictSwim Conference. The team was established in 1995 with a membershipbase that continues to grow every year. With the help of dedicated parents, the River Run Raptors Swim Team is a self-funded and private organizationdesigned for the children of the River Run Community.
The Raptors focus on Team Building, promoting Self Esteem andSportsmanship. Our program is open to any Club members whose children
are ages 5-18. All we ask is that they can swim unassisted across the pool. We will take it fromthere! Our program runs from late May until late July.
We have outdoor practices Monday through Friday starting at the end of the school year, whichis a great way for the children to get daily exercise. In addition, we have an early morning adultlane for parents who want to keep in shape! We participate in the Naperville Swim Conferenceand host 4 home meets (including babysitting for the youngest siblings) and 4 away meets withinother Naperville subdivisions in June and July. During the season, we have some fun socialevents like our pep Rally and a themed Saturday night party. We complete the season withNaperville City Championships and wrap it up at the end of July with a banquet at theBolingbrook Country Club where the children are the main focus.
For the 2013 season, our team fees will be similar to last year, and we do also ask the eachfamily donate their time to make the program a success.
We also have a co-ed Water Polo Team. We are looking for elementaryand junior high children to participate on our COED team. You do notneed to be a Raptor swimmer to be on the Water Polo Team as long asyou are a club member. There is an additional fee for water polo, butthere is a discount for Raptor swimmers. We encourage children to doboth! Most all of our swimmers also participate in other summer sportsand clubs as conflicts can be easily managed in our low stress program.
Please come out for our combined Swimming and Water Polo signupson March 17th from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse. Youcan also check out our website at www.rrraptors.org for additionalinformation, or email questions to me personally at [email protected]
Take advantage of one of the greatest assets of membership in the River Run Club!
GO Raptors!
