Issue 26 September 28, 2018 From the President All right imagine…… It’s next February 15th and the high temperature for the day is -11 degrees. The snow crunches beneath your boots. Snot is frozen to your mustache (which includes some of you ladies). Valentine’s Day is a bust, (the usual). What would you feel like if it was 60 degrees warmer? Heck, you might even go to Oakwood for the weekend. Well, “President Donald” has delivered again. This weekend is supposed to be in the lower 50’s so I’m giving you all what you will wish for in February - but I’ve giving it to you right now - a 60 degree temperature increase for free! Yes, free! You will be able to see what those naked neighbors of yours look like with clothes on. Weird huh? Again, this is my little way of thanking you for you being generous to me. Remember, cash donations to the Prez Donald Foundation always warm me up. Well, as I was not at Oakwood last weekend and have not heard anything, I’m assuming it is as I left it - nice warm pool, volleyball courts, petanque, and a hot sauna. I hope that this weekend people will be cleaning their trailers, playing pool, having campfires and driving their golf carts (actually “golf cars”) with reckless abandon. (See note below). Reminder: Water shutois the weekend of October 13th. Well, “President Donald” has delivered again. Tips for Winterizing Your Camper and Equipment It’s your responsibility to see that your camper is ready for winter. If you don’t take care of it correctly, your pipes will freeze and burst during the winter. That would really ruin your spring! Consider these tips for winterizing your camper and equipment.

1. Read your camper manual to ensure you open all necessary petcocks to drain your system. There should be one for the hot water system and one for the cold water system. Leave both petcocks open.

2. Shut off the electricity to your electric water heater (unplug your camper from the power box on the post or switch off the water heater circuit breaker), and THEN drain the water from the heater. Be sure you fill the water heater in the spring BEFORE you turn on the electricity. If you fail to fill it first, you WILL burn out the heating element.

3. If your camper or park model has a toilet similar to the one in your home, borrow the club bilge pump and pump out the toilet bowl water into a bucket. Then pour a pint or so of antifreeze into the bowl to protect the trap. Be sure the tank on the back of the toilet is empty and pour a little antifreeze in it, too. If your camper has an RV slide valve type of toilet, you won’t need to pump it out or add antifreeze.

4. Be at the camp when the compressor is being used. Remove the back-flow preventer from your faucet on the post if you can unthread it. If it won’t come off, leave it. Disconnect the hose from the water supply faucet and open the faucet when you are instructed to do so while the compressor is running. Once all the water has been blown out of the line in your area, shut off the faucet and reconnect the hose.

5. Open the faucets inside your camper.

6. Open the supply faucet to allow the compressed air to blow through the hose into the camper’s water

system. Any trapped water should blow out of the open petcocks. Be sure to open all the faucets inside your camper including the shower head and RV toilet foot push valve (if applicable). Let the crew know when you are done—once they shut down the compressor, you won’t be able to blow out your system.

7. Remove the water hose and store it for the winter.

8. You’ll need some inexpensive RV antifreeze. Never, ever, use automotive antifreeze! The amount will depend on your camper. If you can drain and blow out your entire water system thoroughly, you should only need enough for all your drain traps—about 1⁄2 gallon.

9. If you are unsure about your water system, ask around—someone will advise or help you.

10. Remove any paper products or secure them in a mouse-proof container (like your microwave) for the winter.

11. Remove all food items and any liquids that might freeze.

12. If you have a lawnmower or other gasoline-powered item, drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it quits. Or add some STABIL or Sea Foam fuel treatment to the gas and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute the additive throughout the fuel system. Follow the directions on the additive.

13. If you have an electric golf cart, be certain the batteries are completely charged. Disconnect the ground or power cable to ensure there is no possibility of the batteries draining down. If they stay charged they won’t freeze. If not, you’ll have an expensive problem in the spring!
