vETERANS DAY PARADENOv 11 • 8am

THE LODGE will again be participating in the Annual Veterans Day Parade, November 11. We will have two floats; one for Pati's band that will be playing military hymns and the other for lodge members. The lodge member float will be reserved for our older members. All others will walk along side. It's a short parade that starts at the South Congress Bridge and proceeds to the Capitol.

We will decorate the floats in the lodge parking lot late afternoon, Nov 10 (3:00pm). We need float decorators and decorations. The lodge has decorations for only one float. Between now and then please pick up red/white/blue decorations. The sparklier the better. The Dollar Store has a good selection. Bring them to the lodge with a note 'Veterans Parade'. A big 'Thank You' to member Steve Esker for donating a 16' trailer. We need a 20+ft trailer for the band. Please contact Pati if you can help with a trailer. Thanks!

ACL ParkingFundraiser update

RIck Perkins, Chair, Parking Committee

THIRTY VOLUNTEERS from the High Road worked for 6 days during the two ACL fests to raise almost $15,000 for the High Road. Some people worked all day from 9 am to 6 pm and others just helped for a few hours; we had a lot of fun. The ACL Parking Fundraiser is the largest fundraiser that we have at the High Road and we look forward to more people helping next year.

We may also open up some single day parking for theFun, Fun, Fun Fest ... if we have some folks who would like to work it.

RICK PERKINS Rick Perkins is a native Texan, Houston-raised, and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Texas. He has worked as a materials & processes engineer for Honeywell Aerospace and as an Environmental Engineer for the USEPA and the TCEQ. He started his own business in 2009 which allows him free time to volunteer at the High Road and previously with the Elks. He has been awarded the Oak Hill Citizen of the Year twice and Lodge 201 Elk of the Year once. He’s is active in several non-profits and has served on multiple committees of the High Road, including Membership, Parking, and Upkeep. Perkins would like to serve on the Board as long as he can still contribute to the other Committees. He strongly encourages NEW members to serve on the Board with him.

MIKE POPE I am honored to have good friends ask me to run for one of the Board of Director positions in the upcoming election. I’ve served previously, multiple terms, as Treasurer at BPOE and as Treasurer at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. I’m a retiree from the City of Austin, Austin Energy. There, I was a Senior Contract Compliance Specialist, where I verified the work performed in the day-to-day operations of the contractors with maintenance and/or construction contracts such as General Electric and Westinghouse for work performed at the City’s Decker Creek Power Station, Holly Street Power Plant and construction of the Sand Hill Energy Station. I’ve been retired from the City for 9 years, but dabble in real estate investing. The High Road on Dawson is important to me and I am committed to its success.

New Board Member Candidates

The election for three new board members will betaking place at the November 5th member meeting.

KATHLEEN DAVIES Greetings Members, for those of you that are new members and don’t know me, my name is Kathleen Davies, and I have been associated with 700 Dawson Road for ten years. I have spent many an hour at the High-Road working tirelessly for progressive change in wanting to make the lodge a community based organization, were members felt at home, and desired to give back to their community.

The question has been posed “why would you be a good addition to the board”, I think that can be demonstrated through my prior leadership commitments as a communicative and transparent leader, listening and working with the membership.

Under the HighRoad’s prior organizational chart I held many positions prior to being nominated as the CEO. Prior to that tenure I was the Chair or Co-Chair on many Committees, i.e. Fall Membership Fundraiser (09/09); NYE Dance Committee (2007-08, and 2010); Winter Mem-bership Fundraiser (09/11); developed the Recycle Committee, and a Landscape Adoption Committee and have been a continuous contribu-tor to the lodge newsletters.

Once the HighRoad was established I continued demonstrating my sup-port with the lodge through being the Membership Committee Chair (2013-2014), Eeyore’s Birthday Fundraiser (2009 to present) and by being a member on the Charity Committee, working on fundraisers that have now been established as reoccurring lodge events.

I believe my participation with lodge activities demonstrates my com-mitment to our lodge. Several members have requested that I throw my hat back in the ring. I am a stage in my life were I have time to commit to listening to “you” the member, and being on the Board, I become a representative for you. I ask that you come to the lodge on Thursday, November 5th to cast your vote, it is your opportunity to be heard.

RICK GONZALESI am Rick Gonzales. I am running for The Board of Directors. I want to be reelected to the Board because my name is on the Elks Law Suit and because I want to continue as your Bar Manager. Your vote can get me on the Board, your feedback can help me get appointed as Bar manager by the existing Board members. I will need 5 out of 9 Board votes for that to happen. If you are happy with what I have done over the past 3 years please let it be known.

Professional Experience: Retired, worked 41 years for the American Statesman. I managed up to 200 people from 13 different countries. The diverse group taught me to be patient, compassionate and to never rule from a position of power.

Lodge Experience: Member since 2000. House Chairman 2002, I helped turn the kitchen and bar around to help pay a $19,000 property tax bill. We made about $30,000 that year. In 2008 I ran a 3-day SXSW event called Sansa Playground. We brought in $28,000. In 2012 I took over as House Chairman. When the Elks pulled our charter, I was able to take the $500 per month rental income and grow it to $5,000 per month by negotiating new parking and room rental contracts. Two movies were filmed here that brought over $14,000 to the lodge on my watch. My service is to the members of this lodge. I have met many really good people here. If you like what I do, share it with the other Board members. I thank you for your support.

AMY SLAGLEHowdy! My name is Amy Slagle and I would like to serve on the board for The High Road on Dawson. I am a 17-year Austin resident with a back ground in public service. I would like to serve on the board to give back to our members as well as to have a voice in the future of The High Road. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to be a member of a dedicated team that will continue to lay out long-term goals for our organization. Thank you for your consideration.

RICHARD MARTINEZI am running for a position on the HR Board because I feel that I can use my background in project management, previous board positions and the military to help keep the HR on track with its current goals and help facilitate future ones. Since 2008 I have always supported the lodge in multiple ways such as holiday parties, charity & veteran events or just helping out with lodge support on various committees.

RAY LEYENDECKER My name is Ray Leyendecker. I have been nominated to be on the Board of Directors. I have been a member of the lodge for almost 17 years. I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran, a member of the VFW, past commander of the American Legion, presently I am the Chaplain of the American Legion also of the American Legion Riders. I am very out spoken on topics I believe in. I love to work and communicate with people. I’m not a politician and will not make you any promises, but I’m all for keeping everyone informed as to whatever happens in the Board of Directors meetings. You might not have seen me volunteer for things that go on at the lodge, but anytime Rick Gonzales or the lodge needs me, I’m there. Richard Martinez and I were responsible for putting on the special Me-morial Day presentation that honored our eldest and most loved living WWII Veterans as well as our past Veterans.

The Austin Polka Band was terrific! Uriah Shafer rocked the Chicken Dance! We had members that dressed up, members that brought great deserts, members that volunteered their time to help. These events are only successful when we all come together to help and enjoy! And We DID!

THE HIGH ROAD ON DAWSONBOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

October 21, 2015

Call to Order: 7:26pm

Roll Call of Officers: Nataysha Doyel, Peter Geranios, Bonnie Gibson, Brad Neal, Rick Gonzales, Carrie York and guest Rick Perkins

The Pledge of Allegiance

The minutes of the last session were read. Carrie motioned to approve the minutes as read. The motion was seconded and passed.

OLD BUSINESSRick Perkins was allowed the floor to give a report of the ACL parking efforts. He provided a report and turned over the profits from the event. He requested that the funds be earmarked for development of the West field. Discussion ensued. BOD proposed to develop a capital improvement schedule by the end of the next BOD meeting.

BUDGET – Peter will advise Diane to approve – with Diane’s amendments – the recommendations of the CPA to cleanup our chart of accounts.

TCAD – Brad stated that we are still awaiting a response from the TCAD offices. The response should come soon in the form of a letter. Brad will ask Dan to reach out to TCAD to ensure that everything is progressing smoothly.

DEVELOPMENT – A meeting has occurred between the developers and the lodge to work out the details of the ground lease. The ball is in their court to figure out if this deal is really something that they will be able to pursue. They may come back to the table with proposed modifications to the deal. We will submit additional invoices to the developer for reimbursement of legal fees.

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEESEVENTS – Carrie discussed the Member Appreciation party preparations. Budget needs to be prepared. $800 had previously been budgeted for the band. An additional $1,000 will be requested for the ‘smile booth.’ Carrie motioned that $3,000 (inclusive of the $800 already committed for the band) be made available for the event. Motion was seconded and passed.

Oktoberfest was reported as being successful. Financial results are still forthcoming.

Some follow-up discussion occurred around the HAAM event. We could have used better controls; lesson learned. The square system was still new at that time, so there was somewhat of a learning curve. All-in-all, the event was successful and we will likely make this an annual event.

Veterans Day parade still needing some volunteers

Trunk or Treat is scheduled and is coming together.

CHARITY – No update. Proposal for events forthcoming: by December BOD meeting. They will work with events committee to help schedule and plan.

YOUTH EVENTS – Most likely to be active during the summer months only when school is out.

TECH – all square terminals have been installed.

NEW BUSINESSDiscussion occurred about communication through Google groups that have been set up.

Peter presented a bylaw revision that clarified disciplinary actions. Peter motioned for adoption. The motion was seconded and passed.

Discussion occurred about the nominating and election process for Directors at upcoming Member meeting.

Proposal for recycling was provided to the board. The proposal will be reviewed at the next meeting of the BOD.

Issue was brought to the Board concerning the level of administrative support available in the office. Discussion ensued.

Carrie presented invoices for lodge beautification efforts (curtains and such). Peter motioned that Carrie be reimbursed $830.29. Motion was seconded and passed.

Guest Rick Perkins left the meeting.

LEGAL UPDATE – Upcoming depositions were discussed.

Meeting was adjourned at 10:34pm

Respectfully submitted byPeter Geranios, acting Secretary
